Kirby Hocutt Refuses to Say Washington is in Ahead of Michigan

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Sorry if this was covered in the noon-games thread, but Kirby Hocutt was interviewed on GameDay this morning, and he refused to say that Washington is in ahead of us. He was given every opportunity to, but he refused to say they're in and we're out. Sure seems like he's keeping the door open.

I'm not holding out hope if VaTech doesn't win, but it seems like we have better odds than Jim Carrey did in "Dumb and Dumber."

Story is here.

The money quote: “I can’t speculate because I’d be trying to guess what 11 other members think about (Washington),” Hocutt said. "Small margin of separation between Nos. 4 and No. 5. Great performance by the Washington Huskies. Late tonight, we’ll continue our discussions and have everybody’s body of work in front of us."

John U. Bacon was putting forth this very same possibilty yesterday on WTKA. His theory is that the CFP committee REALLY, REALLY wants Michigan in, and they're going to do everything possible to make that happen.

Yes, they have one fewer loss and a conference championship. They also played zero bowl teams in the non-conference, while we played three bowl teams in the non-conference.

Kill the messenger here, but Hocutt is leaving the door open a crack. If they want us in, they can justify it.

That theory doesn't make any sense. If the committee wanted us in in over UW, then the committee surely would have had us at 4 this week and UW at 5. All of the stated reasons for choosing us were available for consideration last week and we were still ranked behind them. They can't rank UW higher, have them win a conference championship in a blowout (by a larger margin on neutral field than our home win over CO) and then have us pass them while we're idle. They'd be heavily criticized for how stupid that looks. If they were hellbent on having M in we would have been 4 this week. It's over.

We are screwed unless Clemson loses. Plain and simple but we all knew that today anyway.

I hope a miracle happens and we get in.

If not it's Florida State for us and the Orange Bowl.

I think we should decline the invite and just take the entire team to each playoff game and taunt bama!!!!!

:-) go blue happy holidays family!

If Clemson wins, it's 1) Bama, 2) OSU, 3) Clemson, and 4) Washington. If VA Tech wins (please!), it's 1) Bama, 2) OSU, 3) Washington, and 4) Michigan. That is all I have to say...

I dont care if we deserve to be in or not. I want us in and it seems the committee wants us in for ratings. Ill take it even if it means posibly losing to alabama. I dont care if every other deserving team doesnt get in. Im selfish. Im a young fan and havent seen us win anything ever

Should be obvious he's not going to gut the selection show by giving anything away, or undermine integrity of the committee by saying he's the sole vote that matters or he's been 'reaching out' to the others. You're reading way too much into it. If WA was ahead before, they're well ahead now Whether Clemson should be ahead of us, even if you consider last week a loss, is much more debatable. I truly do not understand that given their home loss and very nearly loss to mediocre teams plus the bad call benefit vs Florida St. And even the wins over Louisville and Auburn look not impressive now

Listen, I love that we are all fans, and I wish we won last week to have a legit shot at the playoff, but the Orange Bowl isn't the worst thing in the world. The playoff would have been nicer, but it isn't like we are shit and we aren't going to be in a prime time game against a very high profile opponent.

In money time in the Iowa and Ohio game and could not get a 1st down to eat the game clock. Huge missed opportunity and a waste of talent. We are a 4 team ... if we performed.

I think your point is very good. Michigan had a chance to put those games away with a first down or a drive and they didn't. Complain about officiating, atmosphere, etc, but you gotta get a first down and chew up time.
Now, I don't mean to make any statement that Michigan is a poor team. They are a great football team that was 4 points or a couple first downs away from being undefeated. That's football though, you don't get many second chances. Unless VT wins, Michigan won't get a second chance.

The committee sent a strong message two years ago to TCU and Baylor about how it feels about weak non-conference schedules and Washington epitomizes that point this year.  If the committee wants to stay consistent in that message and their "encouragement" for P5 teams to schedule stronger opponents... as in no FCS opponents, then they will punish Washington by leaving them out of the playoff.  Oh, and Michigan is in!

I don't think the H2H margins with Colorado matter, but them winning their conference with 1 less loss does.  And UW has basically beaten the doors off people save for USC.  They played in a weaker conference, but it's not like they played a G5 schedule.  The Pac 12 is probably the 3rd/4th best conference in the country.

I would think they don't want to announce until the official show. There's no way we get in unless Clemson loses and probably need psu to win.

then beat the #8 team like a drum and drop below someone who didn't play.  They are ahead of us.  Clemson loses and we can talk but that's less likely than the odds Colorado had

Absolutely! There is the slimmest of chances but there is still a chance. The committee thinks we're pretty and looking for a way for us to get in. If Clemson loses, I think we're in. While that is hugely unlikely, they still have to play the games. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. And the worst is a NY6 bowl. First world problems!

Clemson is not losing tonight. The committee has said that if 2 teams are razor close in their mind, a conference championship would factor in the decision. Time to put the playoff hopes to bed for this year........

Washington is in above UM, and at this point it would take Clemson losing and both PSU and Wiscy to look terrible (and for PSU to win) for UM to get a bump, and even then it's probably not happening.

I'm okay with all that.  Had UM not lose to Iowa, then this discussion has some merit and you could say that UM's one loss is better than anyone else's and all that.  But UM lost twice, and for as bad and inexplicable those loses are, they happened.  I'm fine with the Orange bowl, hopefully a good win, and 2017.
