He visited Sparty on Wed., after visiting Michigan this weekend.

I'd guess this is bad news.  Sam Webb has said some of those around him weren't happy with the way Michigan was recruiting him.  That changed this last weekend, he had a very good visit, family liked it, etc.  Michigan improved in his eyes.

But given prior commitment to Sparty and just-improving relationship with M, it's probably not good.

Last season was a disaster, not so for Sparty.

David Dawson decommitted and recommitted.  As a general rule I agree kids don't recommit, but if this was a case "go visit other places and make sure this is right for you", it may not apply here.  Each case is unique.

The difference is that the NFL has a lot to lose if they get a negative reputation, so it makes sense to protect it.

As far as Michigan insiders go, guys like Sam Webb and Steve Lorenz lose their reputation if they're wrong. There's no shame for them to tell the truth and say that guys are leaning elsewhere, because if they're right, they become trusted sources.

As far as recruiting news goes, I think those two guys are leading the pack right now, ahead of the guys at ESPN, Rivals, etc.

So he was not the potential silent commit that will be allegedly revealed at the end of June? I know it was someone not 100% tied to M and most would agree insiders don't have him going to M for sure.

Had good things to say about his visit to MSU last night and their writers seem to think he told the coaches MSU is still his favorite.  But he did talk about them landing King and Robertson and how that would work with so many DEs, so that might be a concern of his.

If I had to guess it's 50-50 MSU and us.

Michigan had quite a bit of ground to make up in this one. I believe both his parents are Michigan fans, so that helps Michigan's case. The visit going really well would also be a benefit; but the timeline seems to indicate MSU.

MSU is likely getting three DL commits in the next week: Roberson (WDE), King (SDE/3T), and Jones (DT). They'll supposedly take up to 5 guys on the DL, but one must have flexibility to be able to potentially play OL as well. None of the guys above nor Kareem have that flexibility, so my feeling that this is him getting back in the class after his parents wanted him to at least explore his options a bit more.

Maybe I'm pessimistic about it; as I said, there are hints that he really enjoyed his visit to Michigan. But the timeline and circumstances make me feel like MSU will be his decision. Hell of a DL haul for them with or without him though.

I agree with everything you're saying here, but people who are informed and not me are saying they think this points toward Michigan.

I also don't really see a need to recommit to Michigan State right now, though. If he backed off because he wanted to take more visits and such, then it doesn't make a ton of sense to recommit before the summer and/or official visits have been taken.

Including Alabama, Tennessee, and Penn St (and several other B1G schools). However, I'm reading some of the same things you are through the grape vine (don't have any accounts), and apparently, he may not have made the visit to MSU yesterday as initially reported (this is coming from both the Michigan and MSU side of things). But then Wiltfong has an article up discussing the visit, so I dunno what's going on there.

So, we'll see I guess.

I actually think Kareem has more upside as an interior player, either a 3T or a 5T SDE. If Michigan's going back to the Under front, I think that would be an optimal fit for him.

This was my initial reaction to his film when he first committed to MSU:

It's still a bit early, but Kareem has finished his JR year, so I think it's fair to give him an evaluation. His first step is inconsistent right now, shows flashes of it being really good and flashes of being average. But this is a high school kid, and that's the difference between high school and college: in high school you can be inconsistent with footwork and technique and get away with it, college you basically have to bring it every down. The important thing as far as projecting an upside is that the first step is there from a potential stand point.

He's and interesting prospect as far as skills and body composition. He'll need to continue growing but his body is currently on track as far as where he needs to be, which alleviates a lot of injury concerns from having to grow so quickly and makes you more confident he can handle the size. He's a better short area player than pure athlete. Because of this, he'd make a very interesting 3-Technique if he can manage the size. As a DT prospect, his first step and arm length can be very difficult to handle on the inside. You can utilize him in quite a few ways with splitting doubles at the point of attack and on line stunts and the like. Not sure he'll ever be a 300 lb player, but I think he has a body that can manage at 280+ if need be and if MSU wants to go that route.

His first step potential means he can stick on the edge as a DE at the next level, but I don't think he'll be the type of player that out-athletes a lot of OTs to get to the QB, as in he won't have a great speed rush. He'll have to be a more of a technician from a DE standpoint, stout against the run, really improve his hand play, and get strong enough to utilize a bull rush/inside move combination. Most of his flashes as far as first step currently come from a nice inside lateral step, which will be improved once he learns how to split defenders with his hands and get his body a bit smaller (turning shoulders so OL can't get square on you). Again, his length is currently difficult for high school offenses to handle, he really holds down the edge well and tracks back inside with his wing span and he's already strong enough to play that at the high school level consistently. At DE, I think it'll be interesting how they bring him along, because I don't see him as a true pass rush specialist to bring in fresh on 3rd and long (I've thought this was a natural role for a lot of the raw DEs MSU has previously brought in), so they may use him a bit in a different sort of role with more inside moves, and things of that nature (things that MSU likes to utilize in their 3-3-5 package).

I think his upside and floor depend a bit where MSU wants to play him. His ceiling is pretty high regardless because of his length, but I think his upside is a bit higher at DT and his floor a bit higher at DE. To use a phrase that isn't meant to be utter for non-white players, I think at DE he'll be more of a "lunch pail" player. Very strong against the run, has potential to use his hands to keep clean, hold down the edge, and can technique his way to the QB by using his hands and continuing to fight to the QB (he's a good enough athlete to do that sort of thing and can get on blockers quick enough with a first step where improved technique can become very dangerous on the edge). My guess is that he stays at DE, I think his floor is pretty high there and the difference in ceiling isn't worth the move inside, but let's see how his body develops before sticking with one position or not. He'll certainly start outside, or at least should (his body is quite a ways away from being a DT).

One thing that stuck out to me on film - and this is a bit easier at a school like FHH - but he does a great job playing his assignment and doing his job and not straying from it. I love seeing that personally as a guy that coaches. On the read option he stays square before working back outside, on the jet sweep he gets up field and holds the point of attack instead of making the flashy play. Well coached in that regard and that's a good sign that he takes coaching well.
