Kenny Williams Decommits From VCU Interested In Michigan

Submitted by Harbeezy on

Just saw that Kenny Williams was granted a release from his national letter of intent after coaching change at VCU. 4* SG and last 5 crystal balls have him going to Michigan as of tonight. Didnt think we had another spot but I will take him!

I saw a recent mock draft that no longer had Levert going in the first round... it's obviously his life/decision, but I think he needs to come back - he'd be a young senior and is coming off an injury-shortened year that certainly didn't help his draft prospects

I could be wrong, but I don't think his game translates well to the NBA - while he has certainly added weight and strength since coming to campus, he'd still be considered slight and would most likely get pushed around at the next level. I just don't see Levert succeeding at this point in the NBA, but wish him the best in whatever he decides.

I think his game translates better to the NBA than college. In college he was asked to be a ball dominant main scoring option, and he struggled a bit. In the NBA, his ability to pass and handle the ball are a plus at his position, and he can play off the ball more. He can be like a Jamal Crawford type where he can be a microwave guy and can occasionally run the point.

This is why he will fit in with what coach B wants/needs.

"One of the best 3 point shooter in the class and does so with self-confidence as his last shot never effects his next shot; the perfect mentality of a shooter." (ESPN)

Ill take him as I truly think Brown is set for Kentucky.

He says the UMHoops article that having his family just down the street was a big factor in him choosing VCU over other suitors (which included some very good programs).

Of course Ann Arbor isn't nearby, but it's an order of magnitude nearer than Austin.  And if all the other scholly chairs for the options near him have been sat in - given how late in the game it is for 2015 - then I can see how Michigan becomes one of his favorites.

Twice as far, yes, but 10 times as far?  Nope.

Anyway, maybe Smart's leaving makes him feel he was misled about his intentions and he's not considering Texas for that reason.  If distance is a factor, I'd bet he goes to UNC or Georgetown.  If he's willing to go to Michigan or Indiana, you'd think he would consider Texas as well, unless he no longer has warm and fuzzy feelings for Shaka.

Right, thanks for the correction.  But twice as far supports my point in the same way: it's much farther.  8-9 hour drive is doable if not preferred, vs. definite flight to Austin and a long one at that.

As I said in my post I assume the schools more local to him are booked up, given how late it if for 2015 recruits.

I just don't hear of many kids who are willing to go to a school 600+ miles from home but wouldn't consider one 1400 miles from home, particularly when they have a close connection with the coach at the latter.  If Smart had gone to UCLA, I could see your point more.  If Williams is not considering Texas it's probably because he's pissed off at Smart, not because it's far away.  The other possibility is that he wants to stay as close to home as possible, in which case he probably won't choose Michigan.

Why is that?  He can't play basketball.  That's not his fault, but there's no reason he needs to be on an athletic scholarship.  He can get a medical hardsip, stay on scholarship until he graduates and be a part of the team as a manager or in some other capacity.

I'm glad Michigan/Beilein stayed with him through everything and honored his scholarship.  That said, he's not really a member of the team - we had lots of guards injured and played walk ons quite a bit and he was never considered except for a couple clearly garbage time games.  If he stayed on scholarship and became a team manager his role, in actuality, would be completely unchanged.

I know a lot of managers practice with the team - we had two that suited up in the last home game this season. If Hatch took a medical hardship, and was asked to join the team as a manager, would he then be allowed to practice as a manager? Or is that against the rules?

This recruitment, combined with rumors going around, is strong smoke that we have seen the end of the Levert era in Ann Arbor.

If I were him I'd probably go anyway. I don't think he'd necessarily be the number one scoring option next year anyway with Dawkins and Irvin improving the way they did at the end of the year.

If Caris leaves, is it better to take WIlliams, Edwards, or wait for next year? Supposedly we are in for a big haul in 2016 and it might make more sense just to bank the scholarship.

We need a point guard and we have alot of wings at the moment.  Irvin, Levert, MAAR, Dawkins, Duncan Robinson are all wings.  I wd prefer we bank the scholarship for next year where we have a dire needs at PG.  Spike is graduating and Walton is going to be a junior.

I just don't see it being in the cards in terms of a transfer.  Michigan has a scholarship crunch, and even if they lose Lavert to the draft that still only leaves open 1 spot for what could be 3-4 possible recruits.  Maybe Williams goes to UM, but considering he didn't hold an offer from UM when he was initially recruited I wonder how much of a relationship he would have with the staff compared to other programs.

I think he'd be a solid get. Gives JB more shooting and guard depth.

UM has Walton, MAAR and hopefully Levert as ballhandlers until Spike recovers, team doesn't need a PG in 2015.

They should have 2 schollys for 2016, assuming Hatch medicals and Spike and Carisgraduate.

If Levert leaves, we really need Murray, Brown or a 5th year wing in that 6'5''-6'7'' range.

even if he is drafted he will be sitting most of the game on the bench. Look at Trey Burke...I saw Trey play aainst the Lakers last month and he looked good..second leading scorer in the game and iced the game with a basket in the closing minutes and he held Jeremy Lin to a couple points. However,, he was not the starter for Utah as he was most of his rookie year. So unless Caris can get first round draft money and his stock is dropping rapidly toward the second round, the thought proces should lead him to return to Michigan
