yes. when u are the preseason favorite to win the big ten and ranked #2 in the country and then u end up 3rd in the big ten and finish in the elite eight with a strong senior class and a shit ton of talent, then yes its a bad season. Maybe a diseastor is too much but no doubt they could have been special last year. With all the loses they have and no decent recruits coming in for 2014 i dont see how they end up higher then 4th in the big ten

Yikes, have we already come to the point where a season like last year is a "disaster?"

They ran away with the B1G regular season title.  Our first round draft pick center was out for the majority of the season, including the tournament.

It took a miracle three pointer by a team loaded with NBA players to keep us from consecutive Final Fours...

If last season is to be considered a disaster, then sign me up for some more disasterous hoops seasons.

Think Kenpom is underrating Wisconsin (!!!), overrating Sparty and Ohio State slightly, and that Indiana ranking is just utterly bizarre.  As for us, we're probably worse than that right now, but by the end of the year I bet we're like 10th.  So fair enough.

What is interesting is that KenPom has both games against MSU listed as "Away". Has Dave Brandon screwed us out of a home basketball game against them as well? I kid, I kid.

I sent him an email asking for a correction. Given that MSU was a 5 point favorite at home (twice) against Michigan, we will probably get a slight bump up and they will get a slight bump down in the overall rankings once the error is corrected. I figure we will be favored at home.

If this were correct, the Big Ten would be the clear best conference again 11 of 14 teams in the top 40 is brutal but I love it. I really do think it helps us out come tournament time since big games aren't out of the ordinary

If you aren't projecting recruits at least a little bit, then UK/Kansas/Duke would be unranked every year going into the season. I guess analysts have seen what they need to from the offseason tournament in (Aruba?) and it is admittedly a bit easier to project success at the next level in basketball than it is in football. I'm surprised as well, but I understand that some projection is inherent to predictions given a high turnover rate in CBB.

OSU seems to be getting a lot of love here late as the 2nd best team in the Big 10 in a lot of publications based on their freshman class which is interesting.  Frankly I think this year is going to be one big traffic pileup between 2nd and 8th place teams - 2 or 3 losses could separate 2nd to 8th place (i.e. 2nd place being 11-7 and 8th place being 8-10).  Lots of ties in the standings.

As for his ratings, Indiana boggles the mind and I think Maryland and Illinois are undervalued.  Illinois was the 2nd best team in the league the last 10 or so games last year and only lost to 1 team (UM) twice in the final 10 or so. They also started last year top 25 before a really bad Big 10 start killed them.  Their defense was great, they just could not score.  Any improvement on offense is going to make them a serious pain to play.   Maryland was an ok team last year and looks like one of those tournament teams this year you want nothing to do with, a lot of upperclassmen who have been there done that and they actually have one of the best recruiting classes in the Big 10 to boot.  A pair of 7 footers if I remember.

MSU and UM are getting past precedent bumps due to their coaching.  Nebraska is interesting - bring back both top players but wont surprise anyone this year.  Minnesota seems a bit overvaued we'll see.  But I honestly think any of (1) MSU (2) OSU (3) UM (4) Iowa (5) Maryland (6) Nebraska (7) Illinois can finish in 2nd.... or 8th , based on 2 or 3 end of game shots and how they fall this year, they all seem very similar to me.

With anyone else, I would point out that algorithms need, like, data. And that we haven't played any games yet, so the thing really needs some time before we can draw any conclusions.

However, this is KenPom. And we MUST NOT ANGER THE KENPOM GODS. THE RANKINGS ARE ACCURATE.

I find myself thinking, yet again, "I can't wait for football season to be over." That really sucks because nothing makes me happier in sports than college football, but it's just not as fun when your team sucks.

The one that interests me is actually Purdue. I would not have expected them to be top 40. But all hail KenPom, so I'm guessing that I might need to revisit my expectation for Purdue.

I feel like I double and triple Michigan basketball schedule far too much this year.  I guess I'm hoping it'll get here sooner and get this football season done with.
