Journal AMA Largely No Longer Recommends Cardiac Testing for Covid(+) Athletes

Ross Dellenger reporting on new JAMA Cardiology study which outlines cardiovascular monitoring guidelines for adult athletes with positive covid test.

Top line takeaways:

- NO CV testing for asymptomatic Covid (+) patients recommended

- Limited testing for mildly symptomatic athletes with protracted length of illness

- Incidence of CV abnormality is <1% in Covid (+) mildly symptomatic athletes

- Important to remember that mild and transient myocarditis is not uncommon with a variety of respiratory viruses

The nine-page report, heralded by physicians across the country, indicates that doctors are finding so few heart abnormalities in COVID-positive athletes that they are no longer recommending any cardiac screenings for those who experienced mild symptoms or no symptoms.

“The article is trying to restore some semblance of order to the universe with a rationale approach,” says Michael Ackerman, a genetic cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota who briefed both the Big 12 and Conference USA in August regarding the myocarditis scare that swept across college sports.

"remember that mild and transient myocarditis is not uncommon with a variety of respiratory viruses"

So, stop panicking about these hyper fit elite young athletes getting covid?   In b4 "but the old coaches!"

Michigan’s entire student body is under stay at home orders and y’all think the big ten presidents are going to loosen the restrictions for a season they nearly cancelled after one week.

Oh they'll bend if pressure is applied appropriately, they've already proven that.  Now a math assignment for you, NFL has 32 teams, they're headed into week 8 now. How many games played? NCAA has 65 teams in the "Power 5" conferences alone.  Some like Clemson, BYU, etc. have already played 6 games.  How many games total have they played?  Then I was watching college volleyball the other day as well as soccer.  How many games have all those teams played?  Sports of all types have been and will continue to be played during this covid year.  The B1G needs to follow the 'science', (the CDC says 14 days), and stop thinking they're special in some way.

Wisconsin has one of the worst outbreaks in the country at the moment.  Their may be in fact a logical reason that officials there would be extra cautious.   I suspect we will see many more cancelled games in all sports in November than we did in September given the trend lines.   BTW, I would love to see your cite to a CDC recomendation that athletes resume normal competition 14 days after a positive Covid test.

This has been the general belief in the medical field.  The alarmist headlines from a couple of months ago seemed to come out of left field.
