Josh Gattis talking to the media for the 1st time since fall practice has started
If you’ve been a Michigan fan for a long time the phrase “Establish the run first” should absolutely make you nervous.
I’m not looking for a pass happy offense at all and understand running the ball is important but boy I can see 9 in the box and Michigan running the ball time and time again still. That can be concerning for some
I think that fans conflate "establishing the run" with a boring, man ball offense that lacks the dynamic aspect we're hoping the new RPO brings. I get it … I do. In reality, almost every offensive scheme, aside from pure Air Raid, seek to "establish the run." Our new offense is a Power Spread/RPO -- as in, Run-Pass-Option. The first option in that sequence is the QB keeper. To establish the run, with an RPO offense, often times you see a team call several designed QB runs right out of the gate, and then everything builds off the defenses reaction to that. They're not going to just let the QB keep for 5 yards a carry over and over -- then the fun begins.
Two good posts. Agree 100%.
Better hope Gattis is a better recruiter than warinner. Worst recruiter by far on Meyer’s staff.9 of his 21 offensive lineman commits 2012-16 either didn’t make the 2 deep, got passed by new commits, transferred or was dismissed from the team. His best offensive lines in 2012,13&14 were not recruited by him. But most were lower rated guys or 3 stars. 4of the first 5 signed their 2nd nfl “Fuck You” contracts. One of them is the highest paid interior lineman in the nfl. He 100% developed that unit, that’s what he does, develops great lineman. Just don’t let him recruit unchecked.

Contentious comments from and about Mike Locksley? Locksley said Gattis did a good job watching him call plays last year. Gattis smiled.
That's a shitty thing for Locksley to say about a former coworker. Do you have to be a scumbag to coach Maryland?
Probably due to the reports that Gattis had taken the Maryland OC job then spurned Locksley to come to Michigan.
Locksley is still pissed because he thought Gattis was going to be his OC. But he has zero to gain by starting little battles with an assistant at another school. He's a great recruiter, might lack the judgment or temperament to be in charge of a program. Something went disastrously wrong during his previous stint at UNM.
Basically at B1G media days Locksley got a bunch of questions about Gattis. He eventually got annoyed and snapped back about how he called the plays at Bama and wanted to talk about coaches actually on his staff. Not really that big of a deal.
Definitely not a big deal on Maryland's "did he show them animals getting ripped apart and build a culture that lead to someone's death" scale of HC behavior.
“Establish the run first” is all I needed to hear. The more it changes the more it stays the same.
"Onwenu is 370 and really mobile. It's just mass. Very low body fat."
If this is remotely true, he's going to destroy people this year. He must have been closer to 400 last year then because he was not "very low body fat" last year.
"McKeon had one of best springs hes seen from a TE. One of Top 2 offensive players. "
This is one of those things that you hear and kind of hope aren't really true. Great to hear that McKeon is having a great spring, but one of the Top 2 offensive players? Would definitely rather hear that DPJ or Charbonnet or Nico is ready to break out and have a special year.
Dwumfour apparently not 100% but expected to be ok.

Sorry guys, gotta run. Can't do this one, lol.
Ok guy the Don Brown portion (credit goes to Chris Balas https://twitter.com/Balas_Wolverine?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor):
The D isn't looking past MTSU but they did start preparing for Army's unique offense last spring. Brown says they will have more versatility in coverage but will never stop being aggressive. In fact wants to be more aggressive.
Safties:
Metellus is playing at a very high level.
Brad Hawkins is a close second.
Jmarick woods is third guy right now.
Dax Hill will push ... Just getting started.
Linebackers:
Calls Josh Ross the brightest linebacker he has been around in a long time.
Have five lbs that can play a lot of places in the country.
Most depth he's ever had at the linebacker.
Cornerbacks:
Not sure when Ambry Thomas will be back to full strength but he is doing stuff on the side.
Vincent Gray is coming on strong.
Jaylen Kelly Powell improving and in two deep at corner
DLine
Mike Danna up 20 pounds to 260.
Mike dwumfour is still working on his health but he's going to be okay and is coming along.
Getting flashes of exceptional defensive line.
Carlo Kemp is one of most improved player on the team.
Not sure when Ambry Thomas will be back to full strength but he is doing stuff on the side.
Man, I hope Ambry isn't another "what could have been." The dude looked electric on the field. I hope he gets a chance to do his thing.
So, what I learned is the team is deep. 5 deep running backs, 6 deep WRs, 5 deep TEs.
Deep ... wanna go deep i'll take ya deep.
"We've got 5 backs."
Sounds like we don't have a running back.
Not what he said. He said all are at the starter level and any of the 5 are interchangeable at this stage. I would expect a rotation this year with Tru Wilson having earned the starter role. From there, guys will fit the game plan week-by-week based upon opponent, skill set and overall practice performance. RB room appears much less of a concern versus spring ball.
Not what he said? Maybe you need to rewatch it because that is a direct quote.
Disagree. We don’t have a star running back yet. But we will absolutely have a high floor at the position. Hopefully Charbonnet, or maybe even Turner can be that star.
Agreed. Whenever I watch Alabama split carries among 2 5* kids and a 3rd kid who's only a 4*, I think, "that team doesn't have a running back."
Comprehension bad.
I usually am nervous about getting new OCs, but for some reason Im not this season...not sure how to feel about that.
Nervous.
I feel the same. Gattis' confidence is contagious.
I really like his confidence. He certainly seems respectful and deferential to the game and his mentors to just the right extent. He's not cocky, but he's not underselling his success.

My take on this playing two QBs is about keeping the backups in the room IMO. I think developing a trick play is one thing, or using a lead to develop players is great of course. Putting them both in at same time concerns me because it increases the chance of injury.
