Jonas Mouton: Reasons for hope?

Submitted by PurpleStuff on
I haven't seen it mentioned and I could be reading too much into the stat line, but it looks like Jonas Mouton had probably his best game of the year yesterday. He led the team with 11 tackles and picked off a pass. Combine that with the fact that the defense as a whole only gave up 14 points, and my guess is he had a very good game. Is this the result of being able to play downhill against a conservative OSU offense or is Mouton making real strides/progress? I would love to see this kid take a big leap forward as a senior, as it would go a long way toward shoring up the Michigan defense.

He was out of position on the one long TD run, but other than that he seemed to play pretty well. It really seemed like he made good reads. HOWEVA, OSU really didn't mix in much PA, and differentiating between run and PA has been a huge problem for our LB's.

I don't know. He had a few Laurinaitis tackles. That's to say...he seemed to jump on the pile at the end of the play. He struggled to shed blocks. Brewster got out onto him and completely owned him at least twice. That INT was basically a gimme.

My interpretation of his play was that he was over-pursuing badly. I thought he should've filled the hold on the Saine TD as well as both of Pryor's decent runs. I could be wrong but he seemed out of position at crucial times.

He got sucked in twice on the drive that ended with Saine's run. I'll wait for UFR to confirm, but I think he had contain on the TD run, as well as on a Pryor run a few plays earlier. In fact, I think the run to Saine was called because they saw how badly Mouton was out of position just a few plays earlier. Having said that, he guy obviously has some physical talents, and he'll be about as experienced as it gets next season - so yeah, he could turn in a good year!

I wouldn't take a whole lot out of yesterday's game, OSU really did nothing on offense but pound the ball on the ground. Sure the D held them to 14 points, but Tressel knew what he was doing by just running the ball 75% of the time. The problems all year were consistently in the linebacker/secondary areas especially on play actions, and yesterday obviously provided very little of that.
