Jon Horford gets Michigan offer

Submitted by MH20 on
I didn't see this posted elsewhere: According to TheWolverine, Jon Horford got his Michigan offer from Beilein last week. The article is paywalled($), but here is the most important tidbit, IMO:

"I'll possibly take visits, but I think [Michigan] might be a good fit," he said. "When I go in to talk to Coach Beilein, I'll know.

To me, that sounds like when he visits in a few weeks (after the MHSAA Tournament) he could be leaving a Wolverine.

He's Al Horford's little brother. Might not have as much upside as Al, but I think is more polished right now. Either way, he's a guy with size (ok, height) and definitely has ability. I wonder if he drops for Michigan if the coaching staff will still go after Amir Williams. I'm hoping they do.

Just curious, does anyone think that him finally receiving an M offer reflects on Ziegler's status in any way? I'm told that we still have 1 more scholarship to give (beyond Horford) but I was wondering if the timing was a little suspect. Will Cronin still be keeping his scholarship for 4 years?

I'm not sure of the specifics (or even what it's officially called), but injured players who can't play anymore get a type of medical waiver. They stay on scholarship, get all the perks, everything's paid for, etc, but they no longer count toward the team's scholarship limit. Bass was well taken care of when his career ended, but he never counted toward the 85 scholly limit for the football program. If Cronin's career is over, he will be taken care of, but won't count toward the 13 scholarship limit in basketball.

Wait a second, I thought papa smurf and sneezy were the only two players left on Beilein's radar? This doesn't make much sense considering Johnny B hates tall people.

Except that someone here would already have scouted their Facebook status updates to find out what they recently had for breakfast and assessed the correlation between said breakfast and the likelihood of their attending UofM based on that meal.

We could actually give out three more scholarships. Gibson, Sims and Wright are all graduating this year. Wright is only a redshirt junior but he is graduating early so we won't have to give him a scholly next year. So after this year is over with the committs we already have, we'll have 10 players. Eso Akunne got a scholarship this year but it was only a year deal. So we could sign Zeigler, Horford and someone else. I'm sure Beilein will only sign two more players this year and that depends on whether or not Z and Horford come to UM. Let's hope. And plus, I think he'll save a scholarship for a big man next year (Williams, Plumlee, etc.)

I'm not a premium member of Rivals, but after reading the subject lines on the premium board, my guess is Zeigler will commit to UM soon.

Just to clarify: Balas dropped the news about Horford officially having an offer and the possibility of a commitment being imminent. Dotman around the same time stepped in with some cryptic Zeigler news which was neither positive nor negative; depends on how you interpret it.

I just checked The Fort and Balas had a post noting "positive rumblings" regarding a certain '11 big man who is "big and highly ranked." Sounds like one Amir Williams. Here's hoping that Brundidge's recruiting efforts pay off.

Outside of Brundidge, Shawn Conway our last football recruit and probable basketball walk-on played on the same AAU team with Williams and Brundidge. Perhaps he has 2 good friends trying to pull him in Michigan's direction. I think our chances with Williams are better than Plumlee (brothers at Duke). Still holding out hope for Zeigler.
