Joe's Pizza (of NYC) coming to South U
Per this reddit thread, one of the best pizza places in NYC is setting up shop on South U. This is pretty great news for the pizza lovers among us, particularly those from New York who happen to be in Ann Arbor. I'll be curious to see if it tastes the same with Ann Arbor water. I hear the PFAS really brings out the yeasty flavor of the dough.

My son, who just started at Michigan, will be very excited for this. We live in Birmingham MI but my wife is from NY and - via our many visits to NYC - my son has become a fan of NY-style pizza!
Should do very well with the very large population of New Yorkers in Ann Arbor!

As a fellow birminghamer, I submit the local Brooklyn Pizza is better than any actual NYC pizza
September 5th, 2019 at 9:45 AM ^
And Primo’s shits on absolutely everything else.
Side note: I now live in Seattle but would rather be hoMe
September 5th, 2019 at 12:38 PM ^
We do really like Brooklyn Pizza, but have you tried Supino in Eastern Market? We like it a bit more than Brooklyn. Plus, you can't beat spending a Saturday afternoon at Eastern Market!
September 5th, 2019 at 8:27 AM ^
hopefully it won’t taste flinty.
September 5th, 2019 at 9:01 AM ^
You're all wet craptain!
September 5th, 2019 at 12:56 PM ^
We have some damn good pizza in Flint, water issues aside. NOTE: I tried to come up with a clever, light-hearted comment, but as someone who grew up drinking that water, I couldn't make it work without coming across as a jerk.

Joes is fantastic.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
I enjoyed NYPD while I was living in Ann Arbor - I've never had Joe's, but I assume it's better than that?
September 5th, 2019 at 8:45 AM ^
I'm sorry NYPD is just garbage if you're anything less than 60% towards being blackout drunk.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:47 AM ^
Um, that's pretty much when I ate pizza on campus.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:54 AM ^
I gotta agree. Give me Lou Malnottis or the pizza house any day. The one time I went to NY I tried several different places and disliked all of them. Pizza should make you feel like you swallowed an inner tube.
September 5th, 2019 at 11:14 AM ^
One of the best for sure Lou Malnati’s on Higgins near OHare!
September 5th, 2019 at 12:08 PM ^
Any Malnati's is great, not just on Higgins, near the airport. ;)
September 5th, 2019 at 2:39 PM ^
I spent a week at Ohare for work and I ate at that Lou’s 3 times, still trying to lose the weight. There’s also a giordanos in that vicinity and while I love the original, that one sucked. Absolutely horrible...even the spaghetti which is hard to fuck up.
September 5th, 2019 at 12:50 PM ^
Love me some Lou's. I try going every time I'm in Chicago.
If they weren't so damn expensive, I'd order them and have them sent to my house. But its in the neighborhood of $120 for them to ship six personal pizzas.

‘Bout the same as a game at your favorite BigHouse
September 5th, 2019 at 12:51 PM ^
If you like Pizza House better than NYPD, your taste buds are broken
September 5th, 2019 at 9:04 AM ^
NYPD is fine. They use better ingredients than most places, and the pizza tastes good as long as it hasn't been sitting under the heat lamp for an hour.
September 5th, 2019 at 12:50 PM ^
NYPD is by far the best slice shop on campus
September 5th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
Looks like it's time for a food fight.
I haven't been a student in quite some time so these probably aren't going to make much sense, but this is what I remember.
Ranking pizzas:
NYPD
Backroom
Pizza House
Cottage Inn (the real restaurant)
Cottage Inn (the little pizza joints)
Bell's Pizza
I can't think of anything else.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:39 AM ^
Ann Arbor pizza is quite subpar. Honestly, I'd take a Jet's Detroit-style slice over any of the options you listed above.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
I think Jet's probably fits into this list quite nicely. But I agree with your main point: Ann Arbor was not a great pizza town. But maybe this Joe's place will make it better? Whatever. I still prefer Jimmy John's.
September 5th, 2019 at 9:45 AM ^
In general you're correct, however Anthony's Deep Dish Gourmet is some of the best I've ever had, anywhere.
September 5th, 2019 at 11:29 AM ^
Judging by those listed above, yeah. But if you venture into the non-student world, I strongly disagree. Anthony's, Mani, Neopapalis, and Buddy's are all really good - albeit different.
I also think of the chain pizzas, Cottage Inn is underrated.
September 5th, 2019 at 12:43 PM ^
Yikes, Jet's? That ain't pizza. That said the NYC snobs are not correct in assuming the only place you can get good pizza is NYC. Not true at all but I will say that I recall Ann Arbor as one place that was definitely lacking.
September 5th, 2019 at 9:00 AM ^
when i was in school, there was a place called "south u pizza" as well. i bet you cant guess where it was located.
they were my drunk pizza go to. they had a buffalo chicken pizza and a white pizza that i would hit up regularly.
September 5th, 2019 at 10:03 AM ^
Everyone forgets about South U Pizza. Also my go to drunk food spot.
September 5th, 2019 at 10:27 AM ^
The Buffalo Chicken Pizza was good, but their regular pepperoni pizza was without a doubt the greasiest pizza I think I have ever had. I recall one time the grease soaking entirely through the paper plate causing my slice to begin to fall out when I was walking back towards E University
September 5th, 2019 at 9:12 AM ^
Buddy's is excellent, but a few miles off campus, and is only a few years old (in A2). I would put them above NYPD.
Anthony's is great if you want Chicago style or very expensive traditional style.
Pizza House is not that great, but they use decent ingredients. That puts them ahead of the rest of the pack (Cottage Inn, Bell's, Faz, Jets, Backroom, etc). I do have a soft spot for Jets square pizza.
September 5th, 2019 at 9:13 AM ^
I feel like Pizza House is really an acquired taste. When I first had it, I was like, this is pizza? But I enjoy it just fine now. Something about it is pretty un-pizza though.
September 5th, 2019 at 10:26 AM ^
Sadly, Bell's has closed and was replaced by a Domino's
September 5th, 2019 at 11:10 AM ^
Lateral move.
September 5th, 2019 at 10:47 AM ^
Backroom is baaaad, man. South U Pizza was way better.
September 5th, 2019 at 11:11 AM ^
From what era is South U Pizza? I don't ever remember such a place.
September 5th, 2019 at 12:47 PM ^
Bells Pizza in Ann Arbor closed a couple of years ago didn't it?
September 5th, 2019 at 2:49 PM ^
Totally OT for Ann Arbor but there was a pizza shop on the BGSU campus...Myles pizza. I swear to god they used crack in their sauce, it was that dam good. The owner just up and retired and sold the establishment but not the recipes.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
Joe’s is real hit or miss for me. Some days (or nights) it’s great. Others it’s just ok.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:44 AM ^
I think I've got it... It's only good when you're wasted?
September 5th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
They might have to be bringing NYC water with them. LINK
September 5th, 2019 at 8:40 AM ^
Joe's is one of the most famous and acclaimed NY pizza joints. This would be monumental news if true. Search Joe's Pizza on youtube if you want to get hungry.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:43 AM ^
This is cool, but I wouldn't make the assumption that it will be AUTHENTIC NYC pizza. I went to a Grimaldi's in San Antonio and it was completely different than the one in Brooklyn. It didn't even resemble NY style pizza. Pretty disappointed.
September 5th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
I also like Grimaldi's but it's become so corporate since they started expanding. Just like what happened to BW3 after they changed their name to Buffalo Wild Wings and IPO'd.

Count me in!!
September 5th, 2019 at 9:08 AM ^
I guess Pizza Bob's is gone? Or just not good?
Old guy.
September 5th, 2019 at 9:38 AM ^
Fellow East Quad guy. Remember the place next door to Pizza Bob's? The Garbage Can or some such. I was probably too buzzed to remember anything other than eating there for cheap at about 2am. Ah...the memories.
September 5th, 2019 at 12:37 PM ^
The ones I remember from back in the day:
Omega
Pizza Bob’s & Pizza Bob’ Uptown
Wolverine Den (best deep dish available at 2am)
Mr. Tony’s (next to the V Bell. Not good but closest to where I lived).
September 5th, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
Pizza Bob's still exists, but not sure how they're still in business. Have never seen anyone in there
September 5th, 2019 at 9:13 AM ^
Joe’s Pizza is mediocre at best. All hype no substance. Honestly, it actually kind of sucks.
If you want great pizza in NYC you have to go to Brooklyn. Di Fara’s is excellent. So is Best Pizza. But nothing and I mean nothing in that entire city comes close to Lucali’s on Henry St in Carroll Gardens.
The best pizza you can find anywhere is right here in your back yard in the Eastern Market in Detroit. Supinos is the best damn pizza you can find anywhere in this country. You have to go to Italy to get a better pizza than Supinos. Supinos was amazing when it opened, went downhill for a couple years but right now it’s back with a vengeance. The owner must’ve started coming back in and whipping it back into shape because it’s better than it’s ever been. If you haven’t been there run, don’t walk.
September 5th, 2019 at 9:20 AM ^
Lucali's in Carrol Gardens isn't NY style pizza...Joe's is. Moreover, Lucali's isn't even the best Italian pizza in the Cobble Hill/Carrol Gardens area.
