Jesse Palmer says we are above scheduling App St.
Just watched today's College Football Live show on ESPN where they discussed Brandon and our scheduling App State 2: The Revenge. Jesse Palmer took the position that it was a no win situation, that a 77-0 victory does nothing to erase The Horror, that there was no reason to re-schedule them, and that we should "put our bags down and move on." Not sure what that last thing meant exactly, but I get the gist. He finished with (paraphrase) "Michigan is above this and above App. St, sorry." Pretty much the exact Brian position.

Jesse Palmer's opinion matters to me why?
Everyone is going to have their own opinion on this and few people are going to be open to changing their opinion. To say it another way, I'm sick of this topic already since we are never going to reach a consensus.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM ^
the national MSM has M on television as a topic, whether you are tired of the topic or not. Or is your weariness the standard for whether it should be mentioned on mgoblog?
August 24th, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
Other than our coaches or players, nobody in the media's opinion REALLY matters to any of us. Except if it is something good about us lol..just saying
August 24th, 2012 at 5:08 PM ^
You like Jesse Palmer?!? I figured there must be people out there who do - because why else would ESPN have him on - but I didn't realize that I actually interact with any of them.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
App St scheduling on a Michigan blog is like Brandon Inge on a Detroit Tigers blog. Everyone just ends up upset and with a stomach ache.
BTW, I agree that the topic in general is newsworthy. I just don't see how hashing and re-hashing everyon's opinion is going to do anything other than cause more stomach aches.
August 24th, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
If your standard for what is worthy of discussion is that it should ultimately to lead to consensus, then I think you have a pretty boring world in mind.
August 24th, 2012 at 9:19 PM ^
How does "I just don't see how hashing and re-hashing everyon's opinion is going to do anything other than cause more stomach aches." lead to "your standard for what is worthy of discussion is that it should ultimately to lead to consensus,"?

Edit: Huge picture of Jesse Palmer redacted because M-Wolverine beat me to it 20 minutes prior.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:45 PM ^
Among people who don't think everything Michigan does is infallible, we have reached a consensus: Scheduling the game is dumb.
August 24th, 2012 at 5:44 PM ^
We should no be playing App State again no matter what happens we still lost to them the first time. Why revisit?
August 24th, 2012 at 6:01 PM ^
Because he was The Bachelor.
Obviously.
August 24th, 2012 at 3:59 PM ^
Ordinarily, I'd say it's a good thing that Dave Brandon doesn't care what people on ESPN say. But on this one, I wish DB would listen.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:47 PM ^
When has Brandon ever not cared what ESPN/MSM says? The guy is a slave to perception and the culture of hype and he probably wouldn't even argue that in his most honest state of being.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:00 PM ^
Well we are talking about the same guy who oversaw the creation of the HAIL student loyalty program so... yeah
August 24th, 2012 at 4:01 PM ^
I get it. It's like if that blonde-haired prick from Karate Kid walked into school the week after losing the Karate championship and just kicked Daniel-son right in the face.
He still lost the fight that counted..... and everyone knows it.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM ^
is best. Except for the prick part.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:04 PM ^
But we're certainly not above losing to them.....
Will they be a conference USA team by then? Will there even be one of those then?
August 24th, 2012 at 4:06 PM ^
Who the fuck is Jesse Palmer? even if he is right...
Maybe we shouldn't have sceduled them in the first place. lol.

Are you ready for an unanswerable question: Who had the most memorable college football career.... Jesse Palmer or Kirk Herbstreit?

Forget about the personal attacks about why JP sucks... he's wrong
1) We need a cupcake game, and at least App St. will get the media talking. Is it more interesting to play Eastern?
2) Not playing ASU doesn't erase the Horror either
3) I believe there is a bit of healing (fanbase wise) to beating ASU, and we all know Michigan will not take them lightly (which we may have if it were another FCS team).
August 24th, 2012 at 4:39 PM ^
I agree with you for all of the reasons you stated. Michigan and Appalachian will be linked forever. It's not going away so why not embrace it?
Michigan will beat them in 2014. It won't erase 2007. It's not supposed to. It's another "filler" game on the schedule that will generate more excitement than anybody else they could have scheduled in that role. It's a sign of respect......and it's throwing a HUGE financial bone to a team that might not otherwise get one.
Back to Jesse Palmer.....
He also said that Michigan would be better off focusing on Michigan State who they've lost to four years in a row. Jesse is a moron if he thinks that MSU isn't a primary focus in Brady Hoke's mind. I'm sure that Hoke was embarrassed by the loss to MSU last year. They've got his attention and Hoke will get is payback.

The Michigan-Appalachian State game was your classic David-Goliath story; and unfortunately for us, Michigan was Goliath. But there are some important differences. No one was permanently vanquished. There have been and will be seasons to come.
That game was a big deal for a football program and a university. Rather than take the attitude that the game diminished the University of Michigan's football program (sorry detractors, it didn't), it elevated Appalachian State's. Lloyd Carr, being on the losing end and knowing that an enormous amount of criticism was coming his way, was gracious in defeat and, IIRC, addressed the Appalachian State football team in their locker room after the game.
Huge upsets happen. That is what makes the game interesting, perhaps even great. Michigan, being the winningest team in football history, practically by definition is only going to be on the short end of the stick when they are involved in these upsets. That is life at the top of the heap.
But rather than slink away in defeat and humiliation, trying stupidly and in vein to blot the game from the annals of college football, perhaps, Brandon is not seeking "revenge" (which as everyone acknowledges would be ridiculous) but rather graciously marking a historic event that occurred at Michigan Stadium.
Like it or not, Appalachian State football has a strong link to the University of Michigan. Another upstart about a century ago, Notre Dame, did likewise. Instead, Michigan's administrators and greatest head coach, chose not to schedule upstart Notre Dame for something like 50+ years. I'm not saying that Appalachian State is the next Notre Dame, but avoidance is not necessarily an ideal solution.
Perhaps the re-scheduling of the Appalachian State is a celebration of the game, and its uncertain outcome. On any given day...

Even more than Michigan, I'm surprised that App State wants to do this.
That win defined their program and put them on the map. I work with a guy that went to App State. He told me that he used to be embarrased to admit that he went to a school called Appalachain State. But not anymore after the Michigan win.
It was the greatest win in their history. Why risk diluting it with a subsequent blow out loss?
August 24th, 2012 at 4:54 PM ^
Because they can't live off one game forever. They're looking to move into the FBS and want to become a legit program, not just a little trivia answer. If you're a current App St player, you probably get tired of hearing about the 2007 Michigan game all the time, which would have happened before anyone on the current roster arrived.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:09 PM ^
Jesse Palmer says a lot of things. That doesn't mean his opinion matters.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:09 PM ^
Eh, it's Jesse Palmer. His opinion on this topic definitely doesn't deserve it's own thread.
I also don't agree with the idea that because we lost to App. State once we should never schedule them again. Are we scared of App State? Do we fear them so much that we never want to play them again? No.
If we're going to schedule a cupcake, why not App State? Yes I know, that "The Horror" will be brought up every time we play them, but maybe if it's brought up every time we play them, it'll make the players on that work that much harder not to let it happen again.
"The Horror" will never have not happened, and it will always be there as a loss in our record books. Nothing will ever erase that horrible feeling. But if we scheduled App. State 100 times, and beat them 100 times, I wouldn't mind.
August 24th, 2012 at 4:15 PM ^
I have to agree with Jesse & Brian on this one. Beating the bejeebus out of them 10 years in a row would do nothing to diminish the importance of their one win against us. It's a little like the 69 victory over OSU, no matter what happens in the continueing series between the bitter rivals that victory will always stand alone as something special. I guess the word is shadenfreude??
They got theirs from us, we suffered for it and nothing is ever going to diminish it for either side. In which case its just a national div 1. power taking on a patsie. Happens every year countless times. Its nothing special.

I totally agree with Palmer on....stops....takes long shower....where was I? Oh, yeah, I actually agree with Palmer on this one.
If Brandon did this to "get revenge" on Appy State for humiliating UM a few years ago, this just seems petty. If he did it for the reason I think he did it (i.e. there is NO such thing as bad publicity), then he is wrong. I think it took three years before people stopped mentioning the Appy State loss and I cringed every time I was reminded of it. Now that the furor over that loss has finally died down, Brandon wants to resurrect the memories simply because it will get UM a few extra minutes of face time on ESPN. Dumb....Dumb....Dumb.

How many other FBS vs. FCS matchups will get bumped up to network TV? There will be more pregame hype for that game than many FBS conference games, and instead certainly more than any other teams playing FCS oppenents whose games will be relegated to the Big Ten Network (or regional equivelant).
That being said, I'm not sure if ABC/CBS/NBC picks up the game how we financially benefit from it since we are already tied into our TV contract via the Big Ten Network. I suppose the BTN gets a nice pay out to broadcast the game on the network and we might potentially get a bump along with the rest of the Big Ten schools.
If nothing else, it certainly gets us more national exposure than any MAC school, and probably as much exposure as playing a middling BCS team without as much risk of loss.

People who are criticising Michigan for scheduling Appy St for the "revenge" factor would also be the ones criticising Michigan for being afraid of Appy St if we were to never play them again. You can never win when it comes to people who criticise for a living.
August 24th, 2012 at 8:36 PM ^
if you criticise 1 thing it must mean we are hopelessly fated to criticise all things? Thanks for clearing that up for me.
It would be silly to seek revenge on App St. & I don't think thats why they were scheduled again.
They were scheduled again as a futile attempt at creating "Wow Factor®".
Just another show by the Ringling Bros. and Brandon & Bailey Circus.
Of all the cupcake teams in the country that could use the $ and provide a worthwhile tune up game for Michigan, DB decided to schedule one that had "Buzz". I prefer the Alabama game buzz instead thanks.
August 25th, 2012 at 11:46 AM ^
What I am saying is that people who criticise Michigan football will always find an angle, my statement was not a specific to Palmer's comments. Playing Appy St again can be looked at two ways, one way is to think that we are bitter about the loss and want to exact revenge, the other way is to assume that we have accepted the loss and will not avoid playing them again due to sour grapes and the embarrassing memories of the first game. Obviously the former makes better head lines.
Personally, I don't think we should be scheduling any FCS teams, but that is another matter all together.

He does realize that it takes two schools to make an agreement, right? App St. seems perfectly fine playing the game again.
