Jared Wangler comments on Michigan and NIL
I know NIL has been discussed to no end, but this is coming from someone actively working with the Michigan athletic department to obtain NIL opportunities for Michigan athletes.
TL;DR: He thinks that Michigan is doing a good job with providing NIL opportunities for its current players and does not believe in the "pay for play" inducements for recruits as it is currently violates NCAA rules. He wants Michigan to help more with promoting and facilitating NIL opportunities, but ultimately think the goal should be focused on helping the current players obtain as big of a deal as possible.
FWIW, I approve of the sentiment behind this statement as it is the "right" way of pushing NIL. But ultimately, that does not mean other teams are following that way and continuing in such a way will undoubtedly cause issues with talent accumulation. There is no telling when the market will normalize with NIL and it is important for the university/athletic department to ensure that they don't fall behind in a rapidly changing climate
So, cheat until we're caught?
Who is enforcing this?
(hint: no one)
So, cheat?
It's not cheating, if it's structured correctly. The NCAA rules are incompatible with the NIL and there is a lot of grey area here. It's not black and white.
The enforcement is the market of booster donations. The problem isn't when the NCAA will enforce anything; we all know they're a joke. The sustainability is what happens to a program when they shell out millions and millions for high schoolers who haven't played a down of college football and then they either fizzle out or transfer after a redshirt.
I really like OP's take -- dont worry about recruits getting $2M. If we can get McCarthy $6M then recruits will see that. They can come to a great program, won't get much until they complete a season as a starter, and then they'll be handsomely rewarded. If a kid is in a situation where they need the million up front, we can respect the decision for them to go somewhere else, but also be confident in the kids who come here with the goal of staying and becoming champions (and then becoming rich.)
They are kinda like the laws some communities have about no swearing, or no having sex on Sundays. They are still technically the law but are universally ignored and not enforced. Do we really want to self enforce a rule that nobody cares about?
Or eating a doughnut while walking backwards. If you don't see the difference, then you have a problem with our university and coach. Kinda hope you're miserable...
Is this in response to me? Maybe I'm being dense but I have no idea what your point is and hoping I'm miserable is a bit uncalled for.
Pretty much the sentiment of a lot of MGoBlog contributors. And then tell the NCAA to get lost. Brought to you by the (actual) great generation!

There is no high road for doing NIL “the right way”. No one is going to drop a trophy off at your front door. Either leverage the opportunity, or with your eyes wide open know you will be left behind.
Seriously the last thing we should do is sit on our ass and wait for the NCAA to do their job. They won’t and we will be left in the dust.
Be sure to have plenty of Brasso to clean off the tarnish!
Your trophy is tarnished. Sell your soul for victories. Be just like tOSU! And others. Is this what you teach your kids?
Such an ignorant take. “Sell your soul for victories? Be like OSU?”. The NIL is legal and legit. No selling souls. Play the game within the regulations of what the NIL permits, or be a naive head in the sand dinosaur. Then watch all the other teams leave you behind. Do you teach your kids to not play by the rules that the game permits?
Law is supposed to be made for man, not the other way around. If we are holding back somehow to see whether big paydays to recruits leads to on-field success, then that is a business decision our administration is making. Be we need not portray ourselves as the penitent flagellant because we're still driving the speed limit on the freeway when everyone else is going 10 or above it and the cops are just sitting on the shoulder indifferently.
Besides, the NCAA is not going to mess with any school in the B1G or SEC on anything ever again so really its just our chosen preference at this point to not go that deep into the NIL game, and time will tell whether it was the right choice or not.
Sounds like NIL has us right back where we started. Some schools, the usual suspects in fact, are going to bend/break those rules in order gain an unfair advantage. UM is unwilling to do that. Sounds exactly like the last 20 years, except, instead of us not paying and Bama, OSU, Clemson paying, we're now not paying enough and not giving our starting QB a Bentley to drive around.
I think we need to be clear here, there is no “rule” against using NIL in recruitment and any such rule would not stand up in courts. There is an NCAA guideline that says schools should not do it, but no actual rule. Big difference.
Actually, there is. But don't let that get in the way of your illegal stance. Google it
I'm not sure you know what illegal means.
Then buy them a Bentley. Where's the confusion?
Everything you're posting?
Actually it’s worse. There used to be a few schools breaking the rules. Now many more schools are taking full advantage which has us a bigger deficit.
Is the question to cheat or should the question be at what cost?
Besides the millions of dollars the question of ethics is fair consideration. Although I selfishly want Michigan to dominate in all things do I want to break state law (yes easily changed), remove all concept of "The Team, The Team, The Team" and be everything we despise in the SEC?
I prefer Michigan work to change the rules then break the rules. However I am done with Michigan limiting itself as it has done for far too long.
Hang the Banners
Change the state law.
If CJ Stroud is legally getting a new car from a dealership every 90 days we do the same for both our *5 QB's.
If it is legal in the eyes of the law and NCAA take off the gloves and be better at NIL and benefits.
No longer be the Leaders and Best at apologizing and grab the reins within the eyes of the law.
Great post. I don't think we should break rules. I also vehemently disagree with those that do. None of whom could touch Coach Harbaugh. Same set of people that think that Manuel and Warren are idiots. Wallow in our "mediocrity" or support a better choice. Go Blue!
Who is saying “break the rules”? No one is saying that. I’m not saying that. What we are saying is that the “NIL” has parameters that you can play between. If you choose to limit yourself in those parameters (as it seems to be with Michigan) that is on you and no one is going to pat you in the back on not leveraging NIL as much as you can with what it can legally offer players.
It's not about having some nebulous sense of morality. It's about having smart business sense and not wasting booster money on HS kids before we see what the NIL actually looks like.
For now, we have plenty of work to do getting our upperclass players played, and that will also send the message to high schoolers that if they succeed here they'll make a lot of money.
It's absolutely the right thing to do for Manuel to tell boosters, don't waste your money on HS recruits just yet, let's see how reliable that kind od thing is, but for now let's rain the money cannon on McNamara, Corum, Morris et al.
Manuel is an idiot
If everyone is driving 90 and the cops are not stopping you then the speed limit is 90.
It's pretty much what we already knew, but I do appreciate JW at least communicating and showing transparency.
With that...God help us because the NCAA sure as fuck ain't.
So we should cheat our asses off. Got it
Should we make all our OL wear clubs on their hands so they can't hold? Because holding would be cheating.
So what you're saying is we don't have to wear clubs because holding is the violation. As long as we aren't holding we are playing within the rules. I like that better.
He doesnt think the pay for play model is sustainable and even if i agree with him...neither is this.
Not a useful metric, 6 recruits into a class with so long to go.
I mean the fact that they only have 6 recruits this far into the recruiting cycle is concerning.
Considering coming off the best season since 1997 by winning the Big-10 title and going to the playoffs. That should have provided so much momentum. Something's amiss.
Other factors Harbaugh almost going to the NFL for one and second, replacing both OC & DC. Let's see how this plays out heading into the through the fall football season.
UM has 8 commits, the same number as Florida, one more than LSU and one fewer than Alabama. Texas A&M has 5. Michigan's recruiting does need to kick up but I'm not quite concerned about the numerical breakdown the first week of July.
Thank you
It matters. It matters a lot less then where it ends at in 6 months but unless you know something the rest of us don't this is all we have to go on.
Well I don't know what time i'm going to take a shit today but I'm pretty certain I will...
similarly, I'm pretty certain UM will finish well above Central and Western in recruiting when all is said and done. And yeah, I know that's a low bar but I don't think we should hold up data like this as being particularly meaningful.
Seriously...
Do people REALLY think UM is going to tank its multi-billion dollar FB program? They can see everything that we see...and much, much more. No one wants a legacy of being the ones that killed the golden goose.
If you are building for long-term success you don't usually get there by rushing to the front of the line. Even back in the 'bag' days...for every program that did it and won there were programs that did it and lost (Ole Miss, Auburn, etc.) but we as fans only think about the ones that won and think our fav team just needs to cheat more, cheat better that the other cheaters...
I know its old fashion to some but you've got to have values (transformational) to go along with, and well beyond the 'bag' (transactional) $$. Otherwise, you are just a hollowed out copycat version of every other 'bag' program out there.
Yes, the current administration of the University no longer thinks football is a big deal. But it is still a big deal for the alum and fans.
Lets talk straight not slick. What does a top 50 ranked 5 star recruit have to do in Wangler/Michigan's eyes to immediately take advantage of Michigan's NIL $$$. As you know, some schools and many fans of the sport believe these athletes have already crossed that threshold by virtue of being so highly ranked. If you don't, why not? Moreover please don't muddy up the water by talking about current players because most people believe they all should be paid so no need to put one group against the other.
So is the bottom line for you and the Wangler camp that recruits who are obviously worth something, and who have sacrificed years of their lives, money and their health, shouldn't receive any help from Michigan or the NIL collective(s) until they've actually played a down? If not, when?
Thinking that Ole Miss is somehow above everyone else on the moral high ground is comical.
There are legitimate reasons to worry about recruiting but the current ranking of the class isn’t one of them and honestly has more to do with the harbaugh stuff and staff turnover than it does with nil
Indeed; but the whole is equal to the sum of it's parts. Translation, it's become a perfect storm of what had been an early offseason mess.
What's your point?
A couple weeks ago Alabama was in the 30s or 40s
They still are. They are 31 per 247
And yet both Michigan and Utah will win their respective conferences.
