IU hires Fresno OC for same role

The similarity in names between DeBord and Deboer is going to take some getting used to.

Fresno’s really improved the last couple of years under Tedford, but it’ll be interesting to see if the offensive improvements were more because of Jeff Tedford.

Cal's administration was not too supportive of the football program so recruiting was difficult. In particular, the high academic standards made it tough to compete and build depth. Once he didn't have an All-Pro like Aaron Rodgers, DeSean Jackson, and Marshawn Lynch to paper over things, they fell off. He also burned himself out which accelerated the decline.

I don’t think this was true. He had tons of support and took Cal’s football graduation rate from pretty good to one of the worst in the Pac10.

I worked in the student center where the athletes “took classes”. I also taught a bunch of football players when I was at Ross. Michigan’s expectations are world’s apart from Cal’s under Tedfort.

You're confusing Cal and Stanford. Stanford can legitimately claim to be "above the fray" so to speak, since their ridiculously low admit rate for general admissions (below 5%) means that the lowered bar for athletes is still significantly higher than basically any other program in FBS. Cal, on the other hand, is in the gutter with everyone else. Cal's graduation rates were the lowest in the Pac-10 under Tedford, and he took a bunch of JUCO transfers and other misfits who had no business being at an elite academic institution like Berkeley (even taking into account the lowered bar for athlete admissions). They also shuffle their players into do-nothing cupcake classes like any other football factory school. Cal as a Power 5 football/basketball program and Berkeley as an elite academic institution are basically two different places.

Well, if memory serves me, in 2004 Tedford had Cal at #2 in the nation .... only regular season loss was to USC who won the national title that year.  Finished #4 in the nation that year.  That was my 2nd year of grad school at Bezerkeley.

Cal.  Was #2.  In the country.  Fucking Cal.

yes that team was fairly talented with a g few future NFL guys but Cal has always gotten a decent helping of future NFL talent.  Particularly for a bad football program.  They were relevant in the 1920s so there’s that.

Bottom line Tedford was a good coach and got a lot out of not a lot of talent.

At some point IU is going to win a game that they’re not supposed to (instead of just being close)and their fan base is gonna go nuts. Their head coach is a wacko though.

I believe Brian actually did a profiles in heroism post on Tedford when we were looking for a coach post RR— I’m somewhat curious how that would have turned out in the alternate universe where we hired him instead of Hoke... maybe Hoke would have been the Dline coach and the fan base would have been appeased

Retirement, I believe, but as for his time here, we will always have three yard zone runs, right?

In all seriousness though, he was OC in the late 1990s and I am sure many of us have some fond memories of those Michigan teams. It was kind of strange to see him show up randomly in the Brandon era as a sports administrator here, then dart for Tennessee. He really has been all over.

It'll be interesting; Fresno St. has a pretty good football hotbed right around them, and their offense this year was pretty good but the strength of that team was their top-10 defense.  It'll be interesting to see what he does at IU, which should always run some crazy offensive scheme that tries to overwhelm every team with chaos.
