It's Past 5 O'Clock Almost Everywhere - BBQ/Beverage/NFL Football Thread
Mates,
Man, have we all had quite a week or what? Let's put it aside and focus on some more pleasant topics. First, some NFL football and some very good games this weekend, Saturday games first:
@Bills 6.5 Colts
@Seattle 3 Rams
T-Bradys 8 @ Washington
and Sunday games here:
Ravens 3 @ Tenn (at least one Harbaugh made the playoffs....)
@N. O 10 da Bears
@Pitt 6 Browns
So who do you have? I think Seattle wins big, and because they are three-eyed cousins of the Lions, I'm rooting for the Browns to beat the Steelers.
Beyond that, what is in your cup and on your BBQ? Breaking long-standing pattern this evening, I believe I'll be having a bit of cold sake later. For us, that's radical.
Enjoy your weekend,
XM

Happy Friday XM....I'd like to see the Browns go all the way...next choice would be our friend Tom Brady
Everyone else I just hope are tight well played games don't care who wins as long as they have zero OSU players
Edit: Enjoying a Guiness Stout at the moment
January 8th, 2021 at 8:44 PM ^
as much as i think it'd be cool if the browns advance, i can't envision them getting past the steelers.
too early to pick the CFB championship game winner? bama favored by 8 pts.
January 9th, 2021 at 4:16 AM ^
I have no clue but it probably will be a good game
January 8th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
Almost everywhere indeed. Only 1:20 pm here. But I’m not complaining. I’m ready to join you XM. Will be gong to Ruth’s Chris in a few hours. Happy Hour ar 4:30!
January 8th, 2021 at 6:29 PM ^
5 hour time difference after we 'fell back' from EDST means you have to be in hawai'i. avatar pic makes beaucoup sense in that case. and hey, ruth's chris is an all-time favorite. celebrating anything in particular, or just wanting to have a great dinner out on the town?
January 8th, 2021 at 6:52 PM ^
Yes Hawaii. Riding out the core winter months working remote. No celebration other than it’s Friday. Wife /I are both working remote and sometimes you just need to get away from the hotel.
The avatar is actually Thailand. We’d be there working remote if it wasn’t for their strict quarantine rules. 14 days in tour hotel room. Can’t even leave until day 5/6. And then it’s for 30 minutes in a secure area.
We’ll be back to MI and reality end of Feb. Don’t want to burn through all of the hotel points!
It’s nice not traveling for work for a change. Hawaii gave us (IMO) the best scenario because I’m done with the work day by noon. And at the pool by 12:15.
Lemons to lemonade!
Stay safe and warm XM.

I know Ruth’s Chris is a steak house, but in Hawaii, I always get the Onaga/Opakapaka/snapper special. It is seared in their extra hot ovens Chinese-style with sesame oil, shoyu and ginger. It is Ono, brah. I know it sounds crazy, but I never get the steak there, only the snapper. Try it. You won’t be disappointed
January 8th, 2021 at 8:03 PM ^
Oh, by the way, I am drinking beefeater and tonic and will be following it with the Indiana MgoCocktail of bourbon, apple cider, maple syrup, lemon juice and rosemary. It was in the diaries during the season and was a good one. Cheers!
January 8th, 2021 at 8:06 PM ^
i'm not much of a drinker, but if you had one of those at a gathering i was attending, i'd grab a dixie cup and ask for a taste. i can't imagine what the combo tastes like, but it sounds very interesting.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:31 PM ^
I’ve been to that Ruth’s Chris. They can make a scorpion. Not as good as mamas fish house but less of a drive. Good for you. Me loves some Maui
January 8th, 2021 at 8:51 PM ^
If you are referring to the Ruth in Honolulu, I ate one of the most tender bone-in.
enjoy

Barbados is offering 12 months no taxes to people who would consider working from home/remotely there.
January 9th, 2021 at 8:37 AM ^
No taxes? Countries don't usually charge taxes while visiting outside of the usual sales and hotel tax.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
Chipotle lime pork chops and blue moon. Wife made me give up bourbon for a month. Apparently my memory fails when I drink whiskey.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:30 PM ^
your memory may have failed you, but the your entre choice sounds outstanding.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:30 PM ^
Sure it's just your memory? : )
I jest I jest
January 8th, 2021 at 6:30 PM ^
Cheers, I was going to post a, "Harbaugh is still our coach, what are you drinking?" thread but you beat me to it.
Picked up an assortment of delicious brews today from Bottlecraft in San Diego. Especially looking forward to some new Humble Sea, Beachwood, North Park Brewing, and Silva Brewing. But I'm always open to hear about new breweries in California.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:54 PM ^
Not big into IPAs as much but truly enjoy Beachwood’s Amalgamator.
have you tried Fremont in Seattle ?
January 9th, 2021 at 8:40 AM ^
Head full of dynamite was one of the ones I picked up.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:31 PM ^
What's your go to on the sake? So many really good ones.
In honor of the extension, I'm going full "Michigan arrogance": start with some bubbles; fruit, meat, fish, and cheese; finish with a Napa cab.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:39 PM ^
interesting line up of bubbles and chow, with the cab at the end.
as for the sake, i'm no connisseur, but for literally the first time i ever remember there was some at the store. we are combining that with sushi and and hav\ing a semi-celebration dinner for dear daughter who will be heading back to college monday.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:46 PM ^
We have oldest (who's remote for an extra month), the GF, and the youngers remote school pod (that's 6 total teenagers) for a weekend getaway. Been a blast so far.
And that sounds like a great night at yours. Some people are picky about whether they like the polished sakes or nigori (cloudy, usually a little sweeter), but I really like it all. And sushi sounds great. Enjoy!
January 8th, 2021 at 8:09 PM ^
i don't know brands of sake b/c it's about a 1-2x yr when we have some, but i know i prefer dry and clear. i won't buy whatever i bought again. it is cloudy and too sweet.
January 8th, 2021 at 10:28 PM ^
Otokoyama FTW.
but i know i prefer dry and clear
Warm (cold sake in January? In the UP?) Kunimare is perfect for this time of year. Especially after a day out in the snow and enjoying some beast from the grill.
January 8th, 2021 at 6:40 PM ^
Some Able Super Giant over here
January 8th, 2021 at 6:42 PM ^
Bills, Seattle, Bucks, D Henry, NO and Pittsburgh. I’d like the Browns to win as I moved outside of Cleveland for a job almost a year ago and as a Lions fan, I kinda feel for the folks around here. All the friends I’ve made are massive Browns fans.
PBR and Masthead Dortmunder to drink. No hard liquor. Taking a small break after my son, daughter and I put down a bottle of Jefferson Reserve, a bottle of Woodford Reserve, and 3 cases of beer in 3 days over Christmas.
Food? I tend to fast Friday nights but tomorrow I’m making cream biscuits and gravy all from scratch (well, except I’m not grinding my sausage, it’s store bought).
Then football all weekend with some on and off work in the shop. Oil change and tire rotation and I’m refinishing an old rusted axe head I found on the property. Probably cost more than buying a new one but it’s fun to have a few beers and listen to music and get your hands busy in mindless work.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:29 PM ^
I’m a no carb guy, but biscuits and gravy sounds so good. Don’t want to get all food porn on you but a plate with two runny eggs on top of to split biscuits topped with gravy WITH an extra sausage on top. Douse in chalula.... man... can’t wait until the kids are grown. I’m going to gain a good fifty pounds.
January 8th, 2021 at 10:18 PM ^
Yum. Check this. Fried potato patties (made from smashed potatoes I made this week, the recipe is awesome) with scallions. Then French toast because I have half a loaf of slightly stale challah. Real French toast. Make a custard base and soak 1/2 inch slices of bread for 3 min each side and set aside. Fry in butter and let rest in 150 degree oven until all slices are done.
Topping? Banana slices caramelized in brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Drizzle of real maple syrup made from maple trees on small farms in Ontario.
January 8th, 2021 at 10:35 PM ^
Don’t want to get all food porn on you
Boooooiiinnngggggggg
January 8th, 2021 at 6:51 PM ^
This Dolphins fan says and will always say, "Fuck you Buffalo Bills!!"
I also don't want to see the Browns in the AFC Championship or the Super Bowl before I see the Dolphins.
Watching Brady get one more would be cool.

Buttercrown.
1 shot Dekuypers Butterscotch, 1 shot crown. Shake over ice, then serve with ice in a tumbler.

Had 3 glasses of Colonel EH Taylor and have now moved to some Malbec that my wife picked up to go with homemade chicken and noodles

I’m 8 days into dry January. God bless legal weed.
January 8th, 2021 at 7:30 PM ^
Nice night for some sake XM!
Going all favorites except Tennessee.
Wife wanted grilled cheese and tomato soup so working on that right now with some Galaxie 500 IPA in the glass. Cheers!
January 8th, 2021 at 11:57 PM ^
Is that Galaxies 500 IPA only available in Vermont, where it's brewed?
The name caught my eye because my grandparents used to own a couple of Ford Galaxies.
I went to Untapped, rate•beer and BeerAdvocate and saw no indication of distribution in Michigan.
January 9th, 2021 at 7:30 AM ^
It’s brewed in Burlington, Vermont Rob. They ship to NH, PA, and VA but unfortunately that’s it.
January 8th, 2021 at 7:53 PM ^
I'll take the Brown's for $1000, Alex. Final Jeopardy on TV at the moment. R.I.P. Alex Trebek
January 8th, 2021 at 8:04 PM ^
i actually think the steelers might put in on the browns, but i'll pull for the browns anyway.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:16 PM ^
I have been a Steelers fan since before they drafted Jim Smith but I thought the Browns sounded better there and then there is Jabrill Peppers and MGrowOld.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:02 PM ^
Hoping Mahomes is isolating during the bye week and drinking Bells Hazy IPA.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:10 PM ^
why do you hope mahones is drinking bells?
(j/k)
January 8th, 2021 at 8:22 PM ^
Nice
January 8th, 2021 at 11:58 PM ^
LOL, I'll volunteer to drink it for him.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:24 PM ^
Redrum has January as an off month. Hot water and soda water for me. Maybe a Gatorade zero later.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:28 PM ^
I'm trying to abstain from alcohol for 3 months. The first week has been surprisingly easy, all things considered.
January 8th, 2021 at 8:29 PM ^
Pulling for the underdogs this weekend, would like to see some new teams win/advance.
Enjoying a few pours:
OF 1920
Eagle Rare barrel pick
1792 Full Proof
Blanton's
Cheers and GO BLUE ??
January 9th, 2021 at 12:13 AM ^
Blanton's? Where did you find it? My son in law and his dad have gushed about that particular bourbon and a relative of theirs from N Carolina brought some with when they drove up for a family wedding back in August. My son in law's dad shared a pour of it with me a couple months ago; I (as a bourbon neophyte) felt quite honored.
January 9th, 2021 at 11:01 AM ^
An out of state friend got it for me, very lucky to have him help me out ?.
However, the new Log Cabin liquor store/gas station on 14 Mile road and Lincoln Lake had a couple bottles the other day. Cashier checked the price, only $200 plus tax ?
January 8th, 2021 at 8:30 PM ^
Picked a hell of month to stop drinking (dry January).
Have all the favorites winning besides the Titans.
sushi tonight.

Eating pizza and drinking ...spartie tears.
How does 7-0 MICHIGAN over spartie midway thru the 3rd period sound, plus now going on a power play?
