Iowa Kirk Ferentz 1-on-1 Interview: Michigan "reminiscent of their '85 defense"

I can't embed, but the weekly KCRG video interview from his head coach office is interesting:

Ferentz's comments:

  • "Really is" the most talented team we've faced in a while.\
  • Michigan on film "is the most impressive thing."
  • "Few of their games have been competitive. Played from behind only one time this year"
  • Too many playmakers. "Can't load up in one area" against them
  • "Defensively, they're not overly complicated, they just really play aggressively"
  • "Reminiscent of their '85 defense..wasn't exactly rocket science to get ready for them, but playing against them was a real challenge".

I found these comments on Michigan's defensive complexity interesting when set against the comments of other ACC offensive coordinator comments about it taking 50 hour weeks just to figure out what in the hell Don Brown thinks he is doing.

I had to laugh at the '85 reference and Hammer Time. That was the name of our all out  9 man to the ball defense and dbs cover well and pray we arrive before the launch takes place. Damn, my players loved the crossed arms signal. It was pure beauty. Remember a certain team from Muskegon having the ball at our 5, first and goal. They picke dup three yds in the first three plays and lost 6 on the 4th when we took over. Hammer Time Y'all!!!

Think about how Peppers destroys screen passes.

He is going to be unleashed against an offense that runs their tiny wide receivers east-west and 3 yards deep.

that is 110% true. I feel... I feel like I should warn them. Tell them to drop the ball. Tell them that one afternoon dropping passes is a small price to pay for keeping your mental and physical health. Is catching that screen pass worth your life?

Peppers might have 10 TFLs and two confirmed kills by the end of the first quarter.

Michigan's '85 defense is an all-timer, and Iowa played against it in a slobberknocker. He's talking quality, not style. The '85 D was statistically every bit the equal of '97.

Yes our '85 D was incredibly fierce, but Iowa actually marched up and down the field on us in that game ... we just did a terrific job of tightening up in the red zone. We kept holding them out of the end zone and forcing them to kick FGs.

So while it broke our hearts that they kicked the game-winner at the end, it wasn't like they hadn't earned it.  They very much outplayed us overall that day.  We hardly moved the ball at all.

As crazy as it may seem in the now-longstanding context of boring Iowa offenses and the romantic ideals we often attach to the Bo era, Fry's O lapped ours (with Jimmy under center) and then some in that game.  Chuck Long was a man.

Aside from being a completely different scheme, the biggest difference between our defense and the old 46 is that we have superior CB. Marino beat the Bears in that classic MNF game by spreading the defense and isolating the bears DB's.

We don't fear man to man. Just fast guys who break the edge contain.

Maybe it's because it's only year 1 of Don Brown and Michigan hasn't needed to use inventive blitz packages since we basically crushed all of our opponents so Feeentz could be correct here.

Ferentz knows there is more to Brown's defense, but Michigan hasn't needed to try anything more advanced than what they've been doing every week. That's unlikely to change tomorrow night. Defense isn't like offense. Brown doesn't need to roll out packages to establish tendencies in the same way the offense does. Brown is the cat, not the mice. He needs to have things ready to use when adjustments have to be made, but with only a couple of first-quarter exceptions this year Michigan hasn't needed to do so.

Ferentz's comments about our D is an indication that he doesn't have a clue about what he's talking about. "They're just aggressive" doesn't do this defense justice.

We were robbed of a TD catch in the back of the endzone earlier.  Wonder how much instant replay would have changed the outcomes of other significant games back in the day.
