Indy Pete - Go Blue

September 29th, 2019 at 8:23 PM ^

Asked if he grew tired of all the criticism Michigan received for the Wisconsin loss, he said, "We definitely embrace it, because we know that we’re going to see them again in Indy in my hometown for the Big Ten championship. So I don’t really mind hearing about it because I know when we see them again, we’re going to smack them in the mouth."

I loved his play yesterday. However, I am tired of the big talk from this program. Actions speak louder than words...

It might be okay for you, but when I played (including when that was at our collective favorite school) it was not for me.  And when I was playing football after college I never talked smack - the closest I ever came was a game vs. LA when their defensive backfield talked trash all game.  I scored the winning TD and for the one and only time in my life, instead of handing the ball to the ref, I placed it on the ground between the two trash talkers and said 'dignity is very quiet '.

This is the most I can recall you talking about your playing days. Thanks for sharing your experience,

i played basketball and would get excited if I hit a big shot and yelled to myself, but I didn’t believe in talking to my opponent either. Even when they would talk and talk. At most they would get a “good game” with a smile on my face after a win.

I feel like XM drops these little details from time and time. The rustic living, former career in law enforcement (I think), and now I learn that he parlayed for UM and seemingly in the NFL too? He’s like the most interesting man in the world!

(I suppose his commment could mean that he played in the USFL, which would somehow be 10 times cooler.)

Doing my investigative work, the original LA Rams franchise existed from 1946 to 1994.  So, based on that, XM played in the league some time before 1994.

Hey, I'll drop a name.  Bobby Houston was an NFL LB for a few different teams in the 80's and 90's.  He's now a personal trainer at our neighborhood club.  He is from NC and played for NC State.  He was good friends with Tripp Welborne, who is from NC.  That's my closest link to NFL stardom.

to all, my fault for my cryptic comments as i was heading off to bed, and let me clarify at least a little bit.  i played hockey at U of M, not nearly as much as i wanted, back in the '80's and before red.  i wrote an mgo-diary about it years ago toward the end of red's time as coach.

i did not, not, not play in the NFL.  however, i played in a law enforcement football league that covered most of the country - playing teams like LA, dallas, miami, houston, orlando, NYPD, FDNY, and many others. our team, like most of the others, was filled with ex-college and pro players who were of course out of the league by then.  it was pretty good football.  we would play in college and sometimes pro stadiums (LA coliseum, jack murphy in san diego, NY, etc) with anywhere from, say, 2,000 up to close to 35,000 in attendance.  the games were usually televised and the money we raised from gate receipts went to various charities, police athletic leagues, childrens hospitals, drug abuse is life abuse, and other similar concerns.  it was way, way fun to do and i could bore you with stories but will skip that.

I kind of agree with this. I NEVER talk when I play sports ( I never played past high school) but playing basketball on the street and in leagues, flag football...unless I'm with friends or having fun with my wife.

I don't know if I mind it so much though on this level. There's a lot of psychology in sports and (yes I know they are two extremes) but between "we will beat them in Indy" or "we suck, season's over" I think the former is the attitude that might get you to the next level. There's a level of competitiveness and aggression involved that very few of us are familiar with. When you watch guys get hit or fling their bodies into untenable situation on the field, there's an attitude that comes along with that and it doesn't really just go away the moment you step off the field.

This ⬆️ post ended in embarrassment. They’re 18-22 year old kids... I’m glad he plans to see Wisconsin again in Indy. What should he say?? What can I say. Just tip my cap and call Wisconsin my daddy. I think we need more of this. Seems like the team is soft and we could use 80 more players with an attitude like this. Maybe we can start beating our rivals. You know what they say fake it until you make it.

In 2019 we still argue over when someone should talk and when they shouldn’t?

Bravado means absolutely nothing in the public realm other than for a chance to get extra shit when beat down. The talk means extra criticism, too, when the team has not earned a damn reason to talk so boldly about what they’re going to do.

Therefore, fuck yeah McGrone should keep his “bravado” to inside Schembechler Hall. The most effective leaders, even vocal, are humble in context. See: UM’s basketball team, who had championship aspirations and went about with an internal goal that they barely spoke of in “bravado.” The b-ball team didn’t surprise itself.

Hell, even AB and Josh Norman and those loud players didn’t talk shit publicly until after they did something st their positions.

Keep it in the Big House.

It’s nice to be excited but have you seen Ohio State? Possibly playing for and winning the NC. Have you seen, Iowa? PSU? ND? MSU? And did you see Michigan’s paltry rushing numbers against Rutgers? And did you see Brown adjust to crossers! Nope he did not and you’ll see that soon as well

Exactly, we beat them up, which is exactly what Michigan is supposed to do in a game like that.  If Michigan had come out after being humiliated by Wisconsin and put up a meh 2 or 3 score win over Rutgers, we'd have much more reason to be concerned.

Michigan fucking came out and played the way we've been expecting all season.  Was this the football team's aneurysm of leadership moment or just a fluke performance?  We'll have a much better answer to that question after this coming weekend, but at least there is hope.

If you're not looking for a evidence to maintain some optimism for a season that is only a third over, then I don't know why you bother rooting for Michigan.  Jesus, some fans....

I hope he is right. Michigan isn’t very good at backing up their talk, but maybe this is the year it happens.

He said Michigan is going to face Wisconsin again in Indy and smack them in the face. Lol.

"We definitely embrace it, because we know that we’re going to see them again in Indy in my hometown for the Big Ten championship. So I don’t really mind hearing about it because I know when we see them again, we’re going to smack them in the mouth."

This is why no one respects us. We get one win against Rutgers and start to get mouthy again.

Really surprised people are defending this (well, I'm not really).

I believe the basketball team had a phrase that went something like "Do more, say less"? People actually respect the basketball team, I wonder why?
