IMPORTANT: Check yourself

Submitted by Brian on
I'm horrified by the Susan Brown threads and have deleted them and banned a couple people who went way over the line, including someone with over 1000 points. Threats of violence and casually talking about "teaching a bitch a lesson" are not acceptable discourse here. I put up with a lot of borderline stuff of late just because I didn't have time to monitor closely and that will be the case going forward, probably, but if I do check and I find something over the line I am banning without warning. Do not threaten violence. Calling people banal names is borderline. "Cunt" is over the line. UPDATE: I don't have a good system in place for automatic notification when something gets uber-negged, unfortunately. Please email me with a link to the specific comment (not the thread) if something crosses your line. When in doubt, email me. [email protected].

Thank you. I'm glad you're here to police this stuff because some of these comments are getting way, way out of control. I love the team, too, but it's a game people. A game played by teenagers.

Brian, is there any chance you could add a "report this post" link for issues like this? Or, is that something that would be abused? It seems like you have better things to do than monitor the Board.

Pride comes before the fall.* *I whole heartedly approve of the deletion of malicious threads, what with mgoblog's being a forum for intelligent discussion. I was just enjoying the choice of words is all.

It seems this controversy(ies) has revealed the worst of some folks. Glad Brian stepped in to tone down the masses. Any chance I can have some of their points? Just sayin.

It keeps people accountable for their posts and makes them think before posting, creating a much more intelligent discourse and keeping the darker side of posting on a faceless medium in check. Thanks for keeping MgoBlog a step above 99% of the internet, and Go Blue, crush the broncos!

Thank you very much. This definitely needed to happen. Mgoblog is in danger of degenerating into the kind of board I abhor and refuse to spend time at. FYI, there are some really crummy response posts in a forum post on the Mary Sue Coleman statement (cf. http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mary-sue-coleman-issues-statement) Deletion/removal would be appreciated. Also think you should make Jon Chait article on Rivals required reading. (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ot-jon-chait-reason-and-wisdom-strikes-again) Nuff said. Keep this great blog going, without killing yourself in the time commitment. Have to believe you aren't getting much time with your girlfriend this week.

Brian, would you mind running this on the front page tomorrow morning east coast time? I think enough diaries will go up and a lot of folks will miss it who ought to see it.

I concur. In the firestorm of odium coming from too many Michigan fans after The Article, I think this sort of reminder of basic human courtesy and level-headedness is sorely needed, even in the MGoBlog community. Whether it's this post or a newly-written expanded post with the same message, I think this needs to be seen prominently on the front page of the blog.

Thanks. Things were definitely getting out of hand. Also, maybe some people (people who've been around a long time, people who have respect around the board, the kind who moderate comments on the liveblogs) could be tagged to fill in if nasty stuff starts getting posted when you're not around? It might be nice for you to have backup mods. So you could, you know, have some time off.

I just want to test whether posting the comment number in the email will work. If this comment becomes comment #25, then it won't work because the posted comment number would simply move down one. If not, then there's nothing to see here and this exercise was a waste of time and I apologize in advance. EDIT: Yeah, comment numbers won't work.

it ends up moving to. Click on the "comment number" on the upper right hand of the comment box you are interested in linking to (right now yours is #28 but as you stated, that can change in time). Up in your browser window you will see a new address. For example, your exact comment address is: http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/important-check-yourself#comment-185753 That address will not change. Copy the address that appears and send it in that wat to Brian - then he doesn't have to navigate around to try to find the specific comment you are referring to.

I can use the mouse to click on a thread, and then cut and paste the address/link. However, with comments in a thread, I can only click on the user name, which doesn't bring up the comment in the address line. You could mention the comment number, but I think this number changes if a comment on another comment is posted above the comment in question. And I apologize if this doesn't make sense.

Thank you. Of course there had to be a way to do this. I think I will now edit my comment to: Subject: (deleted) and Comment: (deleted). And go to bed. Edit: too late. Now realize that once someone has responded (i.e., Sgt. Wolverine) my idiocy is there for all to see. Moderators, you have permission and my request to delete this and prev. 3 comments!

As we have seen with the Jay "more points than Brian" situation, it is possible for a group of people to take advantage of the system. With Jay, it was all in good fun. But, I have noticed a certain lemming mentality because the point total (up or down) is displayed for each post. Perhaps, the display should be removed? That way each person would up or down vote based upon their own evaluation of the post rather than just mimicking what others have voted. That would require (as Brian stated) some type of alert that he could check on.

I think a few tweaks could definitely help the voting system, but I don't know what is possible using Drupal. Limiting the number of times person A can either + or - person B would help to prevent negging every post of someone you disagree with. Also locking out someone who receives too many -'s within a certain time frame to prevent excess garbage might be nice.
