How Can Trevor Matich (ESPN) Be So Inaccurate?

Submitted by BornSinner on

I was watching ESPN this morning when they were on the 2016 Future segment and started talking about Michigan with Matich...

His analysis was so off I couldn't believe it.

Dude stated that he thought Michigan would take a step back and that the immediate future was meh because both lines, top WRs (except Butt), and QB would graduate this season.

He said that we would have to rebuild around Peppers on defense.

How can someone be this off? Does Michigan not list redshirts anywhere?

And this guy's paid to know this stuff... smh.

It has become more impossible to watch ESPN "more often" with every passing year.  They just get worse and worse and worse.  I barely even watch Sports Center anymore.  Occasionally, I might watch one of thelr longer pieces on E60, etc, but if if ESPN didn't have so many games, I wouldn't bother to watch them at all.

He just looked at the depth chart, which lists a ton of seniors, and he figured Michigan was losing all those guys. If that were the case, then yes, they would likely take a step back; but that isn't the case.

They should probably pay guys to know what the actual case is, or at least make sure he knows what he's talking about first. Either way, I probably wouldn't get upset about it. I don't really care what he thinks. Just how Michigan does next year, which has zero impact based on what he thinks, especially what he thinks right now.

It pisses me off because you know damn well they're going to hype up OSU like MAD over the off-season even though they lose a shit ton of talent. (granted it is Urbz, but we got Harbaugh come on...)

As someone who works in TV and deals with these situations a lot, these guys don't always have a ton of time to prep for their segments.  Some times its an hour or so, sometimes its like 5 min.

In a situation like this, they probably had Trevor booked for a CFB segment, and depending on how much the producer had their shit together he may have been given a lot of notice, or he may have been given notice like 30min or less beforehand.  And yeah, its his job, but its tough to be up to date on the depth charts for every newsworthy team in CFB.

And Trevor is usually pretty well prepared and researched...so I'm guessing he wasn't given much notice on the topics.

I watched as well, and yes, he did say that we had a lot of seniors on the roster, which clearly is both a mistake and technically accurate at the same time (because they are 4th years in some cases, though it is very accurate at LB where we lose everyone). He clearly said that "the trajectory of the Michigan program is up." He did not say meh or imply that.

Yeah, F off espn.  Listened to their radio station this morning for a couple of hours and all they talked about was how dominate the sec was during the bowl season.  Not 1 mention of either Michigan or Florida during the entire time I listened.  They have no credibility imo.  They seriously can f-off.

He Probably prepped by looking at the roster which is very confusing because it does not list red shirts. I've even googled trying to find a roster that shows the playing eligibility like they used to have and could not. Not sure why.

Trevor Matich and Joey Galloway are the worst two analysts on ESPN. And it's not even close.

Matich truly has no idea what he's talking about, EVER. He gets soooo emotional and caught up in his analogies that he never makes any sense.

He seems like a nice guy (where Galloway is a prick), but Matich is truly the worst. He talks super fast and he's so convicted in whatever it is he's saying even though he rarely knows what's coming out of his mouth...he just talks.

Seriously, every day, I sit at home and think about who I'd fire if I was head of ESPN and those two are always at the top of the list. There are plenty of others I don't care for, but I truly feel like those two HURT the network because they have a platform where uninformed people listen to what they say and they're ALWAYS wrong.

Matich should be hosting Blue's Clues or something like that..."Hey kids, now it's time to sing the BLUUUUUUEEEE'S!!!" YAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

Hosting Blue's Clues is actually a pretty tough job as evidenced by how much that show fell off a cliff after Steve left. I mean think about it, besides like the chair, the side table and a few other props that show is ALL green screen stuff done in post. You have to "imaginative" to pull of that job.

Also in defense of Matich, I don't blame him for not knowing that Michigan doesn't list RS on its roster like most schools and not having our RS situation memorized by player. Of all the transgressions committed by ESPN over the years I'm not to worked up about this one.

I read that only 1 in 20 people (maybe it was millennials) would pay to have ESPN if it were offered ala carte.  At $6.50 per month per cable subscriber, that represents a lot of lost revenue as unbundling and streaming go forward.  Now imagine what happens when all of that money gets sucked out of college and professional athletics.  Salaries, stadiums, TV broadcast quality, etc. will all go to sh_t.

It will an interesting time for sure.

Fast forward to 2017:

"Wow, Dwayne Johnson with the go ahead touchdown to secure Michigan's first National Championship since 2001.  Unbelievable what John Harbaugh has done here in his first three seasons as Michigan's head coach.  With all of the young raw talent on both sides of the ball, it's just incredible."

Or something along those lines.
