Anyway, last night Jim Harbaugh called one of his former teammates. The conversation did not start well as my source states the San Fran head coach said, “Would you hate me if I didn’t come?”

1) Ted Spencer was U of M’s Athletic/Admissions dude for many years. Spencer left this year and has not been replaced. Harbaugh wants to replace Spencer with someone philosophically in line with Ted.

Harbaugh has concerns that Michigan President Mark Schlissel wants U of M to become more like Brown University. Schlissel’s response is that’s not how he wants to operate.

2) I can confirm that Harbaugh’s agent is the one who leaked the contract details to the national NFL media. Which is weird since the U of M athletic department kind of leaked the same information two weeks ago. Very strange.

3) Further complicating matters is it now appears the Atlanta Falcons are extremely interested in Jim’s services and might be ready to part ways with Mike Smith. And they have Home Depot money.

4) The only piece of good news my source can provide is Jack Harbaugh is still extremely desirous of his son’s return to his alma mater.

This is all crap. Harbaugh surely did not call a former player to ask them "Would you hate me..." The rest of it sounds like it could be true, but that quote makes me extremely wary of anything from said source.

Looks like I'll be drinking again tonight.

If his heart is in the NFL, he's staying there.

/WTF Jim, listen to your old man!  He's in his 70's for fucksake, how many years do you think he has left?

I'd hate to be the voice of reason and all, but if he really wanted the job he would've jumped on it already.  Really no legitimate reason to prolong it if he was intent on coming to Michigan.  I've got to be honest it's a bit disappointing knowing that this isn't a clear cut choice for him.  I would caution everybody to brace themselves.

I think tonight I'm going start putting myself into a deep alcohol induced blackout that lasts until the 29th. Snap me out of it if something actually happens between now and then.

This is totally different than what I was reading earlier today.

Jim was going to spend some time with his family over the next few days discussing it. I have never expected anything until after the NFL season has ended at least not anything we would know about.

I call BULLSHIT on all of the above. It doesn't even sound right. I cannot picture Jim calling anyone and asking if they are going to hate him if he says no. I will wait for another source. All of the chatter today has been postive and we are expected to believe this.

NOPE

Tis the season to believe

Harbaugh is coming home!

is not going to fire him and let him go wherever he wants and they get nothing. They know he has value and it's going up all the time. This means the team he goes to will lose draft picks and/or players they need to improve. It's also going to be a lengthy process to get it done.

For Harbaugh the time is right now to cut the NFL deal because he can always go to Michigan. When Michigan moves on he's stuck with whoever SF wants to trade him to.

1. it seems inconsistent with Harbaughs past statements on the importance of academic standards.

2.  The so-called "admissions dude" Spencer does not appear to have left UM, as the post claims..   Ted Spencer is still listed in UM directory and his credentials at a Harvard summer institute says he is in admissions at UM.  Apparently, he is now a senior advisor on admissions outreach and does not appear to have the same administrative title as before.

But even if there is any truth in the post, and Harbaugh is concerned about admissions, I wonder if Spencer could be persuaded to reassume his former position until an agreeable replacement is found.  It would not be unreasonable for a coach to want to satisfy concerns about admissions given a vacant position.  In fact, if he wanted to do so, mentioning another possible offer (Atlanta)  would be a good way to increase his negotiating leverage.

would be undeniable. He would infuriate the Michigan masses. Michigan has come to his door and pleaded for him. Turning the school down would be an abomination that could be only remedied by long distance and light years of denial. Just, don't do it.

He won't disappoint. Michigan won't foreclose his future, it may enable him to redefine who he is and what he wants. Life change has a way of reshaping your prospects and outlook. And he would come back to the fray on top of the world, Ma.

Jim find your internal Bo and tell yourself, the Team, the Team, the Team. That's all there is.

Here is what I will say about Moss. He has had a few things in the past and has been honest that he has one source feeding him this information. We also know he is kinda an asshole. I wouldn't treat it differently than when his info was positive. Use it as a datapoint but take it with a grain of salt

I think it's entirely reasonable that Harbaugh would have questions about the academics. I think that's all this means, if true. I also don't think think it means anything one way or the other.

It appears that his hesitancy is based upon a myth that I hope his family debunks: that the NFL is where you  create a meaningful legendary career as a football coach. I would argue otherwise. In the modern era of football, who are the legends? Belichick? As cold and gray and mercenary as an undertaker. Carroll? Not yet, and what's his quality? Payton? Bounties and up and down seasons.

Legendary coaches, shapers of young men, icons, masters of innovation are found in college football. Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, Bo, Satan (I mean Saban), Paterno, Bowden - there are men who tower over the sport. There's no towering over NFL football anymore, and JH has seen that his passion wears on highly paid and often cynical athletes.

He can be a legend in AA. IMO, he cannot be a legend in the NFL when you are on the trading block with a team that you've taken to three NFC championships in the last four years.

That's what I was thinking. Honestly who would you consider a legend of a coach that has coached in the NFL recently? Other than Belichick I can't think of anyone.

I would say the last couple decades of college football has given us quite a few legends in Spurrier, Saban, Meyer (blech, but true), Tressel (also blech), Carroll, and Stoops.

Either that or the others realize that Jim may be the type of coach that's good for a four-year run before he loses a team of highly paid adults who grow tired of his insane passion. That might make some teams hesitate to hire him outright, let alone compensate SF for him. I don't think the NFL market for Harbaugh is as strong as commonly accepted.

"And they have Home Depot money. It’s hard to battle Home Depot money."

Stupid line. Since when is a public company in the business of paying the salaries of NFL coaches? What would they gain? What benefit would it be to the company and the company's stockholders?

Njia

December 19th, 2014 at 4:55 PM ^

Yes, but not "probable."

What would possess SF to trade Harbaugh to a team against whom they will almost certainly play in the next 1-2 years? That is absolutely non-sensical. If a JH-coached Falcons team beat the snot out of the Niners, the coach of that Niners team would be on the hottest of hot seats and the fans would probably have to be searched for torches and pitchforks before every game. The owner's suite would be under constant guard.

I also don't for a second buy a line dripping with that much melodrama coming out of Harbaugh's mouth. "Would you hate me if I didn't come?" WTF is this, a line from Cinemax After Dark?

I call bullshit.

sierragold

I already called BULLSHIT!

That line is what a two year old would say, maybe a teenager not Jim Harbaugh. Jim Harbaugh is not going to ask anybody if they are going to hate him if he doesn't take the Coaching Job.

Let this rest for a few days, but NOOO, keep coming back mutiplie times a day to torture myself some more.  This process already feels like its taking an eternity.

It's Friday though, plan to go out and have a few drinks.

JH will ABSOLUTELY wait to have at least one NFL offer to make a decision, whatever the amount is. Then his agent will leak the heck of the offer to the media (as far as South Aferica newspapers) and tell everybody that his guy is on high demand.

At that time it is JH's decision - Love for Michigan/College Football, or NFL.

Everything else is rumor, with or without sources.

I haven't gotten very up or down at any point in this search. It's not worth the emotional investment. IT's a realistic opportunity, and I will remain cautiously optimistic but never more than that, until we hear that Jim has signed on the dotted line.

That quote sounds odd. How does Jeff Moss know that those were his EXACT words? And even still, we have no idea what the tone of the rest of the conversation was anyway (if even such a conversation took place...questionable at best). There's nothing about that quote that tells me he has or has not said yes to Michigan, nor does it say whether he is more likely to stay in the NFL or not. IF all it means is that he's considering NFL jobs still...well, shit, what's the big deal? We already knew that. Even if the "deal is in the bag", until he physically signs the contract there's always the possibility that he has a change of heart.
