Harbaugh & Juwan both members of B1G Anti-Racism coalition

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on June 16th, 2020 at 11:07 AM

B1G announced yesterday the founding of a B1G Anti-Hate/Anti-Racism coalition as well as a Voter registration initiative to get athletes registered and ensuring they vote.

This comes shortly after the NCAA urged all schools to give all athletes the day off on Election Day.

6 of 14 B1G football coaches are on the coalition: Jim Harbaugh, Mike Locksley, Mel Tucker, PJ Fleck, James Franklin and Jeff Brohm.

4 of 14 B1G men’s basketball coaches are members: Juwan Howard, Fran McCaffery, Mark Turgeon and Fred Hoiberg.

Michigan and Maryland are the only B1G schools with with both FB and MBB coaches as members. Some places don’t have representation in either sport as far as head coaches go.

In addition, many states with Republican legislatures/Sec of States/Govs, purposely restrict early voting hours at the few locations that are open (and those are also often placed in locations that are only accessible by car and not easily by foot/bike/public transport) and they also tend to cut off early voting the week and weekend before election day for...reasons.

Out of state residency would allow them to vote regular absentee whoever their primary residence would be.  Even in-state is fine... I did that myself when in college decades ago rather than change my permanent address.

The more the merrier?  It's still not clear just how this coalition will operate, so it's difficult to pass judgment, but I fear with so many people involved, it might be too unwieldy to be effective.

Way to go Juwan and Jim! Leaders and Best.

I love the idea of giving the athletes Election Day off. I'm glad the NCAA is encouraging this. I even think it should be a national holiday (or on a Saturday or over the course of a weekend).

Voter turnout is cited at 20-30% points higher in other developed nation democracies where voting is a holiday.

There's a lot more to it than this.

Most other democracies do not have the following:

1) A rigid 2-party system that freezes out all other political thought

2) Winner-take-all constituencies like most of the U.S. states, where voting for the opposition in a blue or red state is effectively pointless.

3) A constitutional system that requires a majority of votes in the House, a super-majority (60 votes) in the Senate and a presidential signature to pass meaningful legislation.  Since it's super-hard to achieve all three, it means that elections rarely result in major legislative consequences.  Ultimately the Supreme Court, an unelected nine-person body of octogenarians appointed for life, basically ends up making the law for us.

These factors depress voter turnout a lot more than having to work on Election Day.

There is absolutely no reason that election day shouldnt be a national holiday.

But frankly I think we should have an election week. Hurts my heart to see people lined up for blocks and blocks trying to vote. How many others see that and turn around to go home because they don't have the time to wait hours after or before work. It sucks we seem to try more to suppress peoples ability to cast their vote than to make it easier on them.

If only there were some sort of "information highway" or "cyberspace" where we could find previously-published stories in which these two men have spoken out on social issues.

Alas, since it's 1982, that's not possible for the average person.  But someday!

In the meantime, let me tell you about this album I just heard, Thriller...

Really, I've never heard of it! I suppose it would be impossible to say anything you want and have it repeated endlessly in this so-called "information highway" you propose exists? Whether it's true or not?

No, you're right it's impossible for someone to say or do something for his or her own ends. And everything everyone publishes on the internet is the Truth.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Both are very high character men who came from a generation where your word is your word. They equally advocate for Michigan and students as a whole. Both very intelligent men who will help to make solid decisions.

It will be interesting to see Harbaugh’s involvement with this potential leadership stage. Harbaugh has always been a players 1st advocate.  He may see this as an opportunity to push in a positive direction for all players as well.

Man is JPC going to be pissed when he finds out that Harbaugh and Juwan are both against racism.

RobF is on it.  No need to worry about JPC or his 12 accounts anymore, the race baiting subversive rhetoric is getting cleaned up.

I'm hopeful we can go back to arguing with Maizen about our 3*'s vs. OSU's recruiting class without seeing politics in every 3rd post.

In isolation, probably not. There was a body of work over the past months that exposed what some posters were about (Many with multiple accounts), and apparently the blog owners and new mod were given notice and took action based on said history.

There are plenty of sites to visit to spew right, left, anarchist, racist, Theocratic, conspiracy theorist, etc opinions.  Since Covid (no sports) and the race protests, this site was devolving into Reddit / 4chan.

I’d really like to get back to discussing whether Mazi Smith and Chris Hinton can hold up our d-line, Instead of arguing why comments about  Buying black votes with watermelons (no matter the context) is offensive, or at the very least don’t belong on a Michigan sports blog.

The Mod changed all your posts to "Trump is a fascist" ? - cool, that makes sense.

Anyways, keep trolling and destroying the board.  You win, you've exhausted me like so many others here, and I don't have the time to respond to a 4chan troll with 10+ accounts and repeatedly tell him he is trash.

Carry on keyboard warrior.

Your stupidity is breathtaking

Working on an issue that broke our moderating system for a few accounts, one of which has become a major problem. So for now I'm just changing all of his comments to what he was basically trying to tell everybody. We'll try to get rid of him asap. Sorry there will be no content from me this morning.

You’re the one threatening to beat people up like a 7 year old and I’m the keyboard warrior. You’re beyond pathetic. In all ways possible.

Nice job derailing this thread by the way.

Yes, I'm on it, as you will soon see.  If not for technical problems that are in the process of being addressed, you'd already be gone.

And if others don't show some real restraint immediately, they'll be joining you.  Take your battles elsewhere far far away from MGoBlog, "gents".  That garbage has ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE HERE.

Do what you must bossman.

This board used to be great, but it's been total shit since the shutdown when people started running wild with the political BS. That's 100% on the board owners and moderators for allowing it to happen.

There was always an undercurrent of "yeah those Conservatives are stupid and backwards" but it wasn't to an extent that couldn't be ignored if you're the bigger person. Now, this place (this genuinely positive thread included) reads more like a huffpost comments section than a sports message board. Frankly, I got tired of it, started striking back using the same level of vitriol as some of the other people, and now I'm banned and "racist" (for writing Biden's own words).

That's fine - I broke the (poorly enforced) rules. I'm sorry to the decent readers of the board for contributing to the shitshow this board has become. However, my point has been made to at least a few people who are still thoughtful enough to see how politically biased and horrible this place has become.

Ban me once you figure out how to on this janky piece of shit web platform. I'll be back as a lurker, with ad blocker humming, to read the decent football content. That is, assuming that all the unpaid contributors like Magnus still bother to perform labor to make this place worth coming to.
