Greg Mattison - Defensive Line Coach of the Year

Well deserved honor.  If he wins this next year, THAT would be a great sign.

Michigan was the toughest defense in FBS to move the chains against. The Wolverines surrendered only 37 conversions in 176 third down attempts, a 21.02 percent conversion rate that ranked more than three percentage points ahead of any other defense since the FootballScoop Coach of the Year programs began in 2008. The Wolverines actually got stingier against the best teams they faced, limiting Colorado to 1-of-13 conversions, Penn State to 2-of-12, Wisconsin to 4-of-15, Iowa to 4-of-16, Ohio State to 3-of-16 and Florida State to 3-of-13 — a total of 17-of-85 conversions allowed (an even 20 percent) in Michigan’s biggest games. Michigan also boasted the second-best red zone defense in the country, turning nearly 30 percent of red zone trips away scoreless and keeping 50 percent of opponent penetrations out of the end zone.

I mean.  I'll say they made a good call so I don't feel bad about giving them a click, but as far as I can find, this may as well have come from SBNation.  I wouldn't really parade this around.

I met him for the first time last spring at a Michigan baseball game @Notre Dame and thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. Much more importantly, though, he's a helluva good coach and the players and recruits love the guy.

Eh?  We were nasty against good offenses but nightmarish against below-average ones.  Hawaii was 1/11 on third down, UCF was 2/14, Rutgers was 0/17.  They're not quite best in history (some early-season jitters and late-season injuries drag the stats down) but we may not see another defense like this for quite some time.

This is an award where I actually would have been shocked had it been anyone else but Mattison quite honestly - I think the performance of the unit more than speaks for itself, and it is another well-deserved honor among many for Greg Mattison.
