Greg Mattison Appreciation Thread
I started this thread without even checking to see if there was already one because it doesn't matter if there already is, Coach Mattison deserves one every week.
This is a guy who stepped down as D-Coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens to come coach defense at Michigan. This man helped rejuvenate a fan base and program that had seen the worst defenses in program history the few years before, and right now, has helped build one of the, if not the best D line rotation in Michigan history. While under Hoke he fielded pretty darn good defenses whose numbers were hurt because of offenses that were inept and he still stayed. When coach Hoke was fired he still stayed even at a lesser role, then when Durkin left he stepped up to the plate to coordinate the D in the bowl game only to step back down for coach Brown. The man is a master recruiter, genius at coaching the D line and I couldn't be happier that he is on our side. So heres to you Coach Mattison, were lucky to have you !

Feel the need to pull this mgoblog thread blast from the past from nearly two years ago. Interesting to read people's predictions wrt Mattison.
So glad we kept him/he decided to stay!

I'll just say this - when he came back to Michigan in 2011, this was something that I thought was a home run sort fo moment among all the staff shift, and I am glad - very glad - that he has chosen to stay. I know one of the compelling reasons is that his daughter and their family are here, but he could be in a lot of places and we are the ons who benefit.

Those who stay...

I hope Michigan wins the Big Ten title this year. Not to shove it in MSU's face or anything. But just to know that smug Dantonio put up that picture earlier this year to have karma come back and bite him in the ass right away.

I had a highschool friend that was recruited by Coach Mattison and after the UCF game this year my friend saw him and yelled out "Hey Coach DeBord!". Coach Mattison looked with a look of confusion but still came over to shake his hand. As he walked away with his wife I could hear her say say "Did you hear what he called you?". I had to correct my firend afterward to his horror. Thought it a fitting cool story bro for the appreciation thread.

I appreciate Greg Mattison.
A HUGE reason Michigan is playing better defense than I have ever seen on the field is thanks to everything this man has done for the program.

while Mattison was DC. Hoke was also the DL coach the last time we won a NC.
Love Mattison and I hope he stays here until he retires.

Hoke coached DE's in 95-96 and moved up to DL coach from 97-02. He also coached the DL while he was HC from 11-14.

Sometimes I tend to forget we have an NFL caliber coordinator as our D line coach. Thanks GMAtt!

I appreciate Greg Mattison. I will always have the memory of Jordan Kovacs blowing up Alex Carder in that 2011 Western Michigan game, plus the pick six and scoop and score for Brandon Herron.
I remember sitting the stands, feeling so relieved to have defense at Michigan again. Little did I know what kind of defense we would have now. One man was an anchor in all of that.
Thank you, Greg Mattison.

I miss this guy's press conferences. Always thoughtful, always on message, and always genuine. Hell of a guy.

I have a few family/friend/football camp connections to him, and even though I am just a periodic acquaintance, he has always remembered me. In my few conversations with him, I have been so impressed with his genuine, down-to-earth, and engaging nature.

We are fortunate to have him. Love his humility, expertise, and swag. Been a very stabilizing influence through stormy weather, great recruiter, and awesome Coach. Thankful Hoke brought him back. Hope Coach Matty stays to Coach for some Natty's !

As long as Don Brown and Greg Mattison are here, I'll never have concerns about our front seven, especially with the way we are recruiting and DEVELOPING players. Some of the best guys in the biz.

Mattison and he is an unbelievably awesome guy. He's very goofy, knows Rihanna lyrics, loves Emilie Sande, and does Ray Lewis's dance quite well. He is an A+ recruiter, and watching him break down film and scheme is soemthing to behold!!

Coach Mattison is a true Michigan man. Forget about his talent, knowledge and experience with football. The most important thing is that he is a genuinely wonderful human being who has the proper life priority (his family, recall his daughter in A2 being one of the reason for coming back), and value and treat other people, especially the players, like an individual gem of a human being that they are.

I was very surprised he stuck around, but it was a great call by Harbaugh. I do wonder if he enjoys being out of the spotlight.
