GoFundMe for my Fiancee's Aunt

Submitted by cincygoblue on

Gents, hope you are all enjoying your Saturday.

My fiancee's aunt is dealing with some health issues and started a GoFundMe to help cover some of the cost earlier this week. I know these get old on the blog, willing to take a bashing to make her happy. Husband in training, right?

Thank you for anything, go blue

Empathy for your aunt if this story is true. However if everyone who wanted help getting bills paid posted these threads this site would be unreadable. These threads should not be allowed sorry.

Mods, I understand why you deleted this person's previous comment that was outrageously sexist and disgusting, but I'm shocked that he hasn't been reprimanded at all? Free speech is free speech but I've seen you guys send posters to Bolivia for less disturbing, albeit deserving, comments. This guy proudly shared a fucking horrific opinion of women and I'd rather you left his comment on the blog for all of us to see (so we don't forget what he said) instead of simply deleting it as if it never happened. Please do something..

Thank you. His removal is all I wanted...I appreciate your support. Still, fuck whoever down voted me. I have been both proud and ashamed of being a Michigan fan over the past two years, but this is when I draw the line. We are not a fan base when we discriminate. I am a strong and successful independent woman, but I shouldn't need to be all those things to deserve equal treatment. I am disgusted with this blog and I am done. Maybe you will be fine without us, but I plan to reconsider all my blog activity in response to your weak/nonexistent stance on immigration. May god have mercy on your rotten soul.

You're absolutely right to be outraged about the sexist comment that was posted, and obviously the vast majority of the blog agrees with you.

However, "may god have mercy on your rotten soul" for not parading around immigration views on a sports blog? Not sure if that was a direct shot at LSA (who puts in a ridiculous amount of hours for free) or the staff in general, but if that's what you expect from this place you definitely should leave. Plenty of other sites to discuss that stuff.

but I wonder how his daugher's dog made out after the operation? I hope the pooch is doing well.

I hope your fiance Aunt can raise money to get the health care she needs.

For a few years at least, threads like this have occasionally appeared and generally left to their own devices unless they get totally out of hand. There's never really been a set policy on these, although the general thinking that I use at least is that if you want to at least attempt to avail yourself of this community for something like this, you're welcome to try though the results....well....may vary drastically from expectations.

Open to input on this thing, folks.

donation. Quick update from my daughter on Udo (my daughter's Dachshund): He's still somewhat hobbled, but apparently isn't in a lot of pain. Been back to the vet for a couple re-checks, and the vet discovered a slight heart murmur. Because of this, he recommended holding off until another recheck while keeping him on medication to see how the back responded; Udo seemed to have plateaued at his current condition about a month or so ago. My observations: His hind legs and left front leg are still weak to the point that he sometimes stumbles slightly while walking and it's obvious that his back end "wobbles" noticeably, especially when he's tired. Otherwise he's still his feisty self. Will he eventually need surgery? Only a guess on my part, but yeah, I think he will. Thanks again to all who donated. I'll try to post another update at some time in the future.

as long as they are properly titled like this, they are fine. if people don't want to donate, they can skip over them. I would hate to see the board crowded by these during football season however. I realize people have emergencies all the time, but this is really more appropriate for "Off Season"

My input is that there needs to be a policy either way at this point. I would personally like to not see them, but that's up to the management of the site ultimately. However if they are allowed I will likely start at least one "hey strangers give me money" thread each day for innocuous things such as lunch or gas for my car, just in hopes that the annoyance becomes enough to illustrate why these threads should not be here.

of course I would not actually do that. The point remains, however. If that is worthy of a trip to Bolivia, where exactly is the line? I personally dislike seeing things like this. If some fundraiser requests are allowed, which ones are and which are not? Can this dude ask for donations for a relatives medical bills? Can a dude ask for vet bill money? Can I ask you guys to buy Girl Scout cookies for my kid? Can I ask for you guys to buy me lunch? Obviously some causes are more deserving than others for charity. But is this the place for any of them? And if it is, how and where is a clear and exact line drawn?

How about this: It will sort itself out. Where the line is drawn feels bit like Justice Stewart's "I know it when I see it" definition, but that probably is the best you're going to get.I get the concern, I truly do. But this is a balance of harm versus good for a community that many people consider themselves to be a part of.

If people start posting for gas for their car or buying a trip to Cabo then I assume the Mods will take care of it, negs will take care of it, etc. On the other hand, if it's something that seems reasonable and these pop up every few weeks then the good balanced against the harm seems pretty minimal. Let's be honest, there's a lot of other stuff that gets posted here that does less good, and frankly is more annoying. No disrespect, but there's a post on the front page about someone getting a call from a recruiter and some computer language having "the" put in front of it. We get new posts when MDen puts some new attire on sale. If we can accept that (and we can) than I'm okay if every few weeks there's a GoFundMe for someone who is part of the community. If you don't want to donate, don't. Maybe it will become so overwhelming that this will change - and I fully admit if it did then I'd be fine with it - but I'm not there yet.

I DO suggest there there is some sort of posting tag though, "GFM" "$$$" or something similar would work.

For me, this always raises questions of appropriateness, verification, insurance, and I regret to say even the political situation.  The counter argument seems to be that if you have any humanity at all, you don't need to worry about those because someone's relative is suffering right now.

I suggest that unless we can have a standard for dealing with verification and insurance questions, to just say it's not appropriate here.

... if you don't like it" thing, but my dislike of this type post is the same as my main peeve with the site: it's near frikkin impossible with an iPhone (which is my main internet connection) to look at posts that have been shuffled off the main page. Posts like this make germane topics disappear into the nethersphere. But either way I'll prolly still keep coming back. I'll just bitch under my breath a bit more if these type posts abound. I'm not insensitive to my (and society's) responsibility to the ill and feeble. But everyone knows someone who needs help and we can't all post those here.
