General NFL / Lions draft discussion

Anyone you want them to grab or avoid at #7?

in favor of a trade down?

As for me, I’m with Sewell or a trade down, and I don’t want either Alabama receiver that high.

I could also live with a trade down even if Sewell is there.

What say you?

Lions have 6 picks, many teams have 9-11. They really should trade down and acquire more darts to throw this year or next considering all the holes they need to fill, pretty much regardless of who is available at 7.  They are not a player or 2 away from contending and are not attractive for free agents because they suck, so they need to fill out the roster with as many draft picks as possible over the next 2-3 drafts.

They obviously need WRs but really think the focus should be on defense. They need upgrades at all levels of the defense, especially DT and LB.

My personal opinion is that it would be better to trade down from #41 than #7 (unless you get another team's first next year). That way you still get an elite player (Fields/Lance/Sewell/Slater/Waddle) that wouldn't be there between picks 13-20 AND you add more picks to your draft pool (the quality of prospect drafted in the late second isn't as big of a step-down from #41).

If we stay at 7, the pick is Sewell (if available), or Parsons (if character red flags are cleared).

The only wr to take at 7 is Chase.

Seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I think if Fields, Lance, or Jones are sitting there available now is a good time to take your QB of the future. The lions have holes as we all know, but does anyone really think Goff is the future? When I say that I mean you’re confident we would actually want to sign him to another contract. It’s really a perfect time to draft a QB honestly. He won’t have to start immediately with our depleted roster. We have a ton of picks coming up in the next couple drafts to fill some holes and get the team ready for a new start. We aren’t tied long term to Goff, plus if he did actually do fairly well maybe he could be traded for some extra picks to help bolster the roster for the new guy. Honestly Goff doing well seems like it could hinder the future. If he’s just good enough to be happy with but also clearly not the future when are we going to have another opportunity to draft a high end QB? One who doesn’t have to be thrown straight into the mix? Not to mention as others have pointed out the upcoming QB draft classes don’t look to be particularly great.

Selecting talent for professional teams is an absolute crapshoot.  You can't predict injuries and don't get me started on personal attributes.  To me it's talent + character regardless of position.

If you don't believe my crapshoot analogy, go back over any team's prior drafts, they miss more than they hit.  If you could do it, I would trade every draft pick for 1-2 year players on other teams that show growth and real possible NFL talent.  Draft kids are still buying the hype they are fed day in and day out.

I'm in favor of building from the inside out. I would take Sewell if available at 7 because that would further solidify the offensive line, which could become a strength. If he's not available, I would look for a trade down and try to secure more draft capital this year and next. If they could somehow get an additional first round pick for next year, that could (If picks are good) speed up the rebuild. Imagine getting 5 starters in the next two years in the first round alone. That would be amazing.
