Gene Smith would never let this ref nonsense fly. Ever.
It’s getting ridiculous at how badly Michigan gets jobbed. Whether it’s Rose Bowl bids from the 70s, Bo’s last game, Burke’s block in the title game or what we’re seeing this year with basketball.
Warde needs to get the fuck up from his ass and do something. OSU meanwhile gets BIG specials on how the refs screw them.
Michigan should NEVER allow this to happen. Full stop.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
This would not be happening if Warde were still alive.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:42 PM ^
Why Craig James did what he did, we’ll never know.
January 18th, 2020 at 3:34 AM ^
Allegedly.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:53 PM ^
Warde? Do you mean Mr. Cleaver- Beaver’s dad?
January 17th, 2020 at 11:53 PM ^
Just to note that ref Terry Wymer is from Ohio.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:21 PM ^
What do you propose exactly?
January 17th, 2020 at 11:25 PM ^
I would propose that The coaches start taking an iPad to press conferences, reviewing officiating, and calling out refs by name, phone number, and address. They’ll get fined, but would force the conference to do something
January 17th, 2020 at 11:32 PM ^
How does that force them to do anything?
Publicly complaining about refs doesn't immediately trigger a review process of the refs called out. The BEST you will ever get is an apology and a promise to do better.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:40 PM ^
Izzo does this and it helps MSU big time. No ref would dare to piss off Izzo unless it’s a late game tech when it’s out of reach to save face.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:54 PM ^
Do you have anything even approaching evidence to back up this claim?
January 18th, 2020 at 8:42 AM ^
Strongly disagree! Harbaugh was ripping them in 2016 and flat out went off after The Game and we had to endure 2017 and a lot of 2018 bs calls because of it. It didn't even get better until after the NW game in 2018 when the called holding on Higdon, ie the play he got tackled and Patterson ran for 20 something yards for a first down in a game we were trailing. That call could have cost that game! We couldn't get calls vs ohio, our dline getting tackled in front of the officials and they wouldn't blow the whistle. Our Receivers got tackled, mugged and we got called for contesting passes. That's what Warde should have been on all season, every season.
It's up to Warde to have the athletic department to track the officiating. They should be tracking officiating crews with analytics to tell them how officials call games. And when it gets out of line for him to be in contact with the Big10 office.
January 18th, 2020 at 3:00 PM ^
AD should put an analysis video on the net. Call these incompetents out.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:32 PM ^
Use the media to your advantage. Make a stink about it. Threaten to leave conference even. The Big Ten needs us more than we need them.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:48 PM ^
Threatening to leave a conference.. you can’t be serious. I like Michigan as much as the next guy. I spent 8 glorious years there, but the B1G will survive without Michigan given we haven’t won anything terribly substantial in close to 25 years.
January 18th, 2020 at 12:07 AM ^
They’d lose a lot of viewers, and revenue.. not just Michigan fans... every game with Michigan is highly marketable to opponents fanbases as well.
January 18th, 2020 at 12:20 AM ^
The football team alone is estimated to be valued at least $800 million.
the B1G would feel it.
If the officiating is still lousy, Juwan (or JH if there is another 2016 Ohio game) should just walk off the court.
Fuck it. Just pick up the ball and go home.
January 18th, 2020 at 7:04 PM ^
"A lot of people go to college for 7 years."
"Yeah, they're called doctors!"
January 18th, 2020 at 9:03 AM ^
Threatening to leave the conference is one of the most hollow threats I can imagine. The contract penalties and lawsuits would all but bankrupt the AD, and it would take years to legally leave.
But I do agree with tracking referee performance and showing video highlights vs the rulebook when addressing call disparity. I do agree with the coaches (and players) calling the BS in press conferences. The problem with this? Warde has proven that he won't say a thing, but will admonish his coaches for doing so.
Warde is an administrative care-taker for the Ath Dept. He is not an industry leader, a thinker, or a rock for fair play. When Harbaugh announced that initiative to investigate the B1G stadiums medical facilities after Speight was seat-belted into a van with a broken neck, where was Warde? Nowhere in sight - he let Harbaugh lead that cause. No AD worth his salt as a leader would have allowed a subordinate to take on the entire conference, but Warde sure did...
January 18th, 2020 at 10:10 AM ^
You can't threaten the conference to leave. It isn't even they need us more than we need them. You have the athletic department track every officiating crew in the big ten. In and out of conference. You track their analytics, which crews call penalties and track against interpretation of the rules. If you are outside of that to the negative and out of the realm of normal penalties per game vs what they are flagging or not flagging other programs for then you have the athletic department.
As for media and Harbaugh. I loved the Spurrier approach setting up officials every single week in his press conferences. He rarely called them out for not calling penalties, esp sec officials. What he did was call out the other team. Ie, Last week we watched Florida State offensive line wrapping all game long on ....'s de's. Or that #22 for Florida St was holding and arm barring #81 on film all last week. He did that all the time. By the 2nd series of every game that was called out.
Brian Kelly did it to Brady Hoke. Brady Hoke in a press conference said grab them, contest and fight them down field they won't throw a flag every play. Brian Kelly calls that out in his press conference and boom, we had 3 pi calls in the first couple series of the game. Hoke never should have said it publicly.
Harbaugh imo got himself a lot of flack for attacking the officiating in his press conferences and they notice that stuff. Imo, that 2016 game was big ten officials telling Jim to F-off...
January 17th, 2020 at 11:54 PM ^
People from the state of Ohio should no longer be allowed to referee Michigan games. That’s what.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:55 PM ^
You're a fucking child.
January 18th, 2020 at 12:04 AM ^
have you been to Ohio?
January 18th, 2020 at 12:11 AM ^
Yes. Have you been to a social worker's office?
January 18th, 2020 at 12:13 AM ^
Don’t mind him. Dude is a troll.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:22 PM ^
Totally dictated the outcome of the game Wagner getting hot and had to sit when he came back he wasn't hot anymore that's just one example
January 17th, 2020 at 11:44 PM ^
Thank you for bringing this up, I had forgotten about it, but it's 100% true.
Also the fact that it was a bad foul call that got Wagner his 4th (should've been a hook on Wieskamp), makes it worse to stomach.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:47 PM ^
And somehow Stephen Bardo watched that replay and chided Wagner for "bear hugging" him.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:49 PM ^
He absolutely clamped on Wagners arm . Did the same thing at the end vs DDJ, although the one on Wagner was much worse. Wagner was playing great at that point and that seemed to turn the tide.
January 18th, 2020 at 5:52 AM ^
As close to a game deciding call as you're going to get at that point in a game. The refereeing last night was straight up garbage. Not even close to within the bounds of normal bad refereeing. They made a mockery of the game, it sucked.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:23 PM ^
Keep crying. That'll show 'em!
January 17th, 2020 at 11:23 PM ^
12/14 big ten teams (every team except northwestern and Nebraska) are .500 or above at home ATS this year: https://www.teamrankings.com/ncb/trends/ats_trends/?sc=is_home&group=428
If you bet 100 on the home team to cover each home game for those 12 teams you’d have made $3800. what a fucking joke.

January 17th, 2020 at 11:50 PM ^
When did you meet him?
January 18th, 2020 at 12:11 AM ^
I met him and asked him specifically about getting professional (full time) refs with all the conference $ and can confirm he is, in fact, a pussy.
January 18th, 2020 at 11:00 AM ^
The important thing is to do things the UM way. Stay quiet, get our asses beat, but keep our sanctimony.
Lose with dignity!
January 17th, 2020 at 11:25 PM ^
Isn’t a period a full stop? Does that add more weight to what is written?
January 18th, 2020 at 10:16 AM ^
I do prefer "full stop" to writing out "period" fwiw. It's as if the writer had forgotten what one of these "." is. Both of which should be replaced with one of these "!" when one is trying to make a point emphatically. It's like they think that grammar rules do not apply to them or something. You might think you are above the law, but you're not above grammar! Period!!!
Which leads me to my disdain for one word sentences. You see, sentences should be able to stand alone without context. For example "Sad." is not a sentence. It may be used as a response to a question, but to simply inject an adjective into space makes no sense!
Ok, I feel better now. I had no idea opining could be so cathartic. Peace!
January 18th, 2020 at 1:52 PM ^
"Period". "Peace".
How many do you use if you DO like one word sentences?
January 17th, 2020 at 11:27 PM ^
No, I prefer my AD doing his job behind the scenes like a professional not a loud mouth jackass like OSU AD. Explain to me what Gene Smith accomplished by complaining about the loss to Clemson? The still didn’t play in the NC. Name another AD that complains the way OSU does.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:32 PM ^
They get shit like 2016. That’s what.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:41 PM ^
Gene Smith complaining has nothing to do with that call. Now, if you want to complain that the refs were from Ohio, I will listen.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:51 PM ^
The head ref from this Iowa game IS from Ohio... you listening yet???
January 18th, 2020 at 12:07 AM ^
No. I prefer not to listen to people this emotional and irrational about a sport that kids are playing.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:59 PM ^
TheCube is a deeply disturbed individual. Only Section1 and Maizen have him beat among unhinged losers on this site.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:33 PM ^
It has worked for OSU.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
It has worked for Izzo and coach K for decades
January 17th, 2020 at 11:28 PM ^
How is Gene Smith relevant to this? First of all, his programs win literally more than 90% of their games, so he doesn't have much to bitch about. Secondly, what happened after he bitched about the game against Clemson? Nothing. He looked like a child and that's it. OSU didn't get a do over or an apology. They lost.
January 17th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
He voiced the opinion of his constituents or in this case the Ohio State fanbase. And because higher ups can’t here us regular folk yelling at our tvs, it would be nice for someone who has a voice to say something.
