Rashan is awesome, and im glad that he probably doesnt need surgery, I knew he is not like Bosa, he is a true team player, always was. He will be back Go Blue!

I hate that a player's mother has to go on FB and tell people about her son's medical condition because a bunch of goobers on the internet think he's faking an injury or a quitter.  All fanbases have this degree of suck, but man does it blow.

Always best to listen to mom!

Seriously, he should take his time and rehab fully.  It would have been shortsighted to play at MSU for a few plays and re-injure himself when the team could handle the game without him. Hopefully OSU is a viable option or a B1G championship game or the bowl/CFP.

If Harbaugh had not indicated it was Rashan’s decision, and not the coach’s or medical staff’s, then the speculation would have been different. Her comments make more sense in that context.

Also: Paye and Uche have been doing well, but they aren’t in Gary’s league against both the pass and the run. They are far more one-dimensional. He’s a genuine difference maker.

I don't get why people read so much into Harbaugh's stating that it was Gary's decision. He's not a minor.  Do people not think he should be an active participant in his own health care and health related decisions??

Rest/rehab and avoiding surgery is a no-brainer.  Also tired of the Bosa comparisions, it is a completely different injury, different situation, different person!

Rashan's mom was very gracious in her statement (much more so than I would have been)

Because Harbaugh made it sound like the staff wanted him to go, but Gary refused. I'm not opposed to Gary being the best judge of that for himself, but Harbaugh could have handled that a little differently, in my judgment. Had he said "We all agreed it was in Rashan's best interests to spend more time recuperating" the narrative would have been different.

Well she said 4-6 weeks. So penn state game would be possible. But according to that timeline he should be back by Ohio state for sure. Psu will be 5 weeks.

Has anybody considered that if there were some straight, simple answers here we could get them if Harbaugh, Gary, and a team doctor all sat down and answered questions from a good reporter?

I have nothing against Ms. Coney-Shepherd, but she’s not a coach, not a medical staffer and she’s not Rashan.

I viewed Harbaugh’s latest comments about Gary’s status as somewhat cryptic, and this Twitter monograph from Gary’s mom as only slightly less cryptic.

I have more questions than answers about this.  What questions did Ms. Coney-Shepherd specifically answer?

Reader71

October 24th, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^

She didn’t answer any specific questions, but she gave a recounting of facts that none of us were previously privy to.

Would your suggestion give fans more insight? Maybe.

Would your suggestion benefit Gary, Harbaugh, team doctors, or Michigan in any way? No.

You sure come off as believing you’re entitled to things you definitely are not. That seems a contradiction to me, considering your beliefs in other fields.

Section 1.8

October 24th, 2018 at 5:55 PM ^

We agree that Ms. Coney-Shepherd didn’t answer any of the currently-relevant questions.  To wit:

  • What is the nature of Rashan’s injury?
  • Which UM orthopedist(s) are treating him?  What is their diagnosis/prognosis?
  • Does Rashan have a personal physician?  Who is it and how is he retained?
  • Is there any disagreement between the physicians/surgeons?
  • Was it a mistaken judgment, to have cleared Rashan to play early in the season after his original injury)?
  • Coach Harbaugh said that Rashan was cleared to play against MSU, but stated in unclear terms that Rashan’s own feeling was that he was not ready to play.  How is that explained?  Why does Rashan feel unready, if he has been cleared?  What is Harbaugh ‘s position, if we are understanding these facts correctly?
  • What do the doctors expect over the the next 4 weeks?  What does Rashan expect?  What does Harbaugh expect?

If my suggested questions were answered, then yeah I would have more insight.  I love insight.

Would answers to my questions benefit Gary, or Harbaugh, or Michigan?  It might benefit all of them, if the answers were clear and direct and consistent and credible and showed all parties to be acting in an admirable way.

I do NOT contend that I am “entitled” to answers.  I don’t believe that any outside third parties are entitled to anything except the right to ask questions.  Which may or may not be answered.

My only insistence is that no one bullshits me or otherwise misleads me.

What I see here are a lot of passionate fans who are more emotional than rationally inquisitive about their team’s players and staff.

Could you guys stop arguing about who was right and parsing her post to see if she was or wasn't being critical of the coaches?  (FWIW, I took it as a factual statement on her part, not a criticism.)

The only news that matters is-If and when Rashan gets healthy, he'll be back on the field!  That is huge!  His healthy presence makes takes our defense from great to unbelievable, and we're going to need unbelievable if we end up in the CFP, and even before that in Columbus.  Go Blue!

Cant blame him... he played hurt and now this could affect his entire career... I have no problem with him sitting out until healed.  This is a legitimate reason to sit, not a Bosa one, the latter is not hurt but simply working out.

BlueLikeJazz

October 24th, 2018 at 11:14 AM ^

That's false. Bosa is hurt and the best case scenario would be for him to be back for a hypothetical B1G championship game, or maybe not until the bowl game. He's basically saying instead of pushing to get back for a game or three, he's going to transition to prepping for the pros.

The big scandal in the Bosa situation isn't that he's done playing, it's that he's done with OSU entirely. The team, the school, the coaches, everything. That's quite a statement to make IMO.

October 24th, 2018 at 11:06 AM ^

Gary should stay out until he is healed and ready to play. It may be the OSU game and that would be great to have him back. If we win the B1G and make the playoffs he may be able to play?

MGoStrength

October 24th, 2018 at 11:10 AM ^

It's easy to understand the speculation between being medically cleared according to Harbaugh in the presser and choosing not to play and what happened to Bosa.  But, it's good to hear she made it clear he wants to and plans to play if healthy and will not leave the team.  He's a great young man.  I hope he's able to play again this season and if not is able to heal up and make a long NFL career.

That sort of doomsaying is, to be sure, due in part to an over-emotional group of fans.  (I upvoted you.)

But so too is the same group of over-emotional fans' cheering for a statement on Twitter from a player's mother who is (a) profoundly biased for one particular party, (b) not a doctor, (c) not a coach, and (d) not answering any questions about what she wrote.

I love everything about her message and I really hate the projection that went on with Rashan, kid was hurt, kid needs to heal.  Let's be patient and not project our insecurities onto one of the players on the team.  Frankly, much as I like UMBig11 he was far more harmful in this case than he was helpful.  Any thoughts of Gary pulling a Bosa should be firmly shut down, until he actually goes and does it.

I would like some clarification on when the 4-6 week timeline started.  Is that 4-6 weeks from the NW game?

Or 4-6 weeks from when he stopped practicing after realizing he couldn't practice without re-aggravating the AC injury?

October 24th, 2018 at 11:51 AM ^

Wow, I love Rashan's mom.  So cool.  This is a huge load off!

Mom says 4 to 6 weeks of rest after it was aggravated which was 3 weeks ago?  Sounds like a PSU return is doubtful.  Probably an IU return is my guess since we really don't need him for Ruggers.  Great opportunity to be completely healed for OSU.

jblaze

October 24th, 2018 at 11:54 AM ^

This is how it goes for a star player, when Michigan (IMO correctly) does not release medical information on players. Fans, twitter, blogs, talk shows speculate and it's up to the player/ his family to decide whether to reveal a medical injury or not.

Gary's mom had a very well written tweet that shut down the rumors and now we move on. I don't think the UM fanbase is bad or worse than others, it's more of a product of the world we live in (everybody and their mom has a mic).

gmoney41

October 24th, 2018 at 1:56 PM ^

Exactly.  The speculation and online chatter and national media chatter will be there.  The statement from mom definitely gives answers that will or at least should shut everyone up about this.  Let him heal and hopefully by osu he will be ready to go!!!!   If he can’t come back this year, then we all know it wasn’t physically possible to do so and not because he quit or anything of that nature.   I love what his mom did here.

gmoney41

October 24th, 2018 at 2:06 PM ^

It’s not just the fans though.  Big ten network and ESPN both talked about rashan pulling a bosa so this speculation is much more than just internet goobers.   When the media starts inferring on a players availability, it riles up all the internet trolls.  It sucks that his mom had to put it out there, but her doing so gives us all a clear picture of what’s happening and should end speculation

NashvilleBLUE

I have a hypothetical that I want to ask the board about that I'm sure is going to get me some down votes, but whatever. If Gary does shut it down for the year in an effort to be completely healed by the draft  (which is his right), how do you think his relationship with Winovich will be?

By Gary's own admission, he was instrumental in getting Chase to return to the team by convincing him that both of them could be the best defense end tandem in the country. Now obviously Chase coming back was a huge benefit to his draft stock regardless of Gary, but do you think that would put a sour taste in his mouth? Bring on the Down votes.

UMhoosier

October 24th, 2018 at 7:49 PM ^

Elite athletes don’t think like fans do.  I’m sure Chase knows that circumstances can change and things can go in a different direction.  Either way, returning was very good for Winovich.

Im in the camp that thinks that Rashan will return if he can.

You Only Live Twice

Hundreds of comments from none of us who know exactly what Rashan is contending with.  With so many websites from reputable providers and surgery centers, I would suggest people read some of this information.

When he fell and re-injured the site it sounds like the pain from that is on a whole other level.  This is reflected in everything we've heard to date.  Depending on how the docs are grading his current status, he might be in that gray area between needing surgery and not, with implications either way.  There is really nothing we should be saying other than well wishes.

You happy now? Baseless speculation and rumors got you your answer. He will play when he plays.

It's sad "fans" feel the need to push for this information. I think it's obvious Rashan and his mom wanted to keep this close to the vest and only had to reveal what is going on because speculation was doing more harm than good.

Agree its a very classy note and great news he is healing.  Don't get the dissection of Harbaugh's answers in press conferences in light of this strong statement by Rashan's mom, which imho really tells us M supporters all we can reasonably expect to know at this point.  Press conferences are not evidentiary hearings, they are just press conferences.
