Funchess was hurt last year (toe)

Asked Funchess about lack of TDs in '14. He revealed broken right toe and torn ligaments suffered in ND, played in pain, still not 100%

So he played hurt last year. That certainly explains some of the lack of production. I've never broken my toe or torn ligaments in my toe (I assume that's where the ligament tears were) but I imagine that it makes it pretty hard to run crisp routes and get up for jump balls.

UPDATE: the Detroit News has a much fuller story on this now (LINK). Main points:

  • Funchess "tore a ligament, cracked some bones off and ruptured some cartilage"
  • Didn't play against Miami (OH) but took a shot to play against Utah, when he reinjured the toe
  • It still hurts, but he won't need surgery

I don't understand why you guys don't have this vitirol towards Devin Gardner if we're going by the same logic of he didn't put up good enough numbers so he obviously doesn't care about winning because of the interceptions he threw. See how silly this is.

"Winning is just a statistic"- Devin Funchess

That's not a thing a Michigan player should ever say.

Take that in the context of a bunch of dropped balls at critical times, and it's clear he lacked any urgency while he played for Michigan. Best of luck to him, but I don't think he laid it all on the line for Michigan, as evidenced by him leaving early without having accomplished anything, and without hearing who the new coach would be.

Was out for a couple weeks.

Torn ligaments?  Yee-owch.  That'll get ya, no problem.

I'm amused that Funchess was asked about his lack of touchdowns.  I mean, how do you approach that?  "Hey Devin, how come you weren't the destroyer of worlds last year that everyone thought you'd be?"  "I, well... I don't know how to answer that."

A lot of people are making jokes about the toe-bone being connected to the finger-bone or the heart-bone. Those people have never had to catch a football, which requires a lot of concentration, while simultaneously being in a lot of pain, which toe injuries cause. I dare you guys to try to play football and do it well with turf toe, much less a broken bone. You will fail. I've had turf toe -- it feels like the bone is going to rip through the muscle and flesh at the end of your foot. It is excruciating, and it lasts for weeks and is constant. You get phantom feelings like your toe is on backwards. And my toe wasn't even broken. Was his statistics quote stupid? Yes. Was it a lot better than saying, 'Fuck you, Mr. Reporter. And fuck all of the fans who are booing my team and doubting my dedication.' Yes. Get over it, you fickle muggles.

that Funchess was the greatest receiver at Michigan since Braylon Edwards (who, by the way, dropped balls too) but that his injury prevented him from setting records. We're just saying that his injury explains a lot. That's hardly controversial.

In any case, yes: I would be willing to bet that Funchess played through more pain this year than many of us have experienced in our lifetimes.

Right! What Funchess is guilty of is falling below our expectations for him. We expected Mini-Tron or whatever, and instead got a decent, kinda slow, big target with inconsistent hands. That's what he is! That's what he always was! Its not his fault that we expected him to become something he isn't!

with the caveat that players of good skill set at the college level can do major damage of they have a supporting cast on & off the field. Mike Williams @ USC is a poor but quick example. If he stated & got healthy I think we'd see a similar but universally better player by the eye standard. Then again, I've seen him around & heard things that make me genuinely question how much he cares. Some guys just don't have that deep passion for a game but still play it. As for his injury, I don't blame him for it & believe him.

This is a good description of him.  We can also add injury prone to the description, as he seemed to always have something the last couple seasons.  So why has he been considered a 1st round pick for two seasons now?

The toe/foot injury explains why he didn't run all over the place last year.  Yet when he did get open it seemed like you could count on the ball hitting him right in the hands, then the ground.  If he caught the easy ones I don't think he would be seen in such a disspapointing light.  And yes, disappointing is another good description of his career at Michigan.

He showed such promise as a true freshman, was a good #2 receiver as a sophmore despite not even starting off as a WR, then looked like a TE playing WR with a full offseason to work on his new position.  Then he's just gone without ever showing what he seemed to be capable of as a freshman.

If I'm an NFL GM I don't even consider drafting him before the 4th round.

I agree with most everything you said, except about the quote; I don't even know if it was stupid. You should do your best no matter how the game or the season is going. If Funchess was not giving it his all, then shame on him, but that quote tells me nothing as to Funchess' effort level.

If you're a Michigan fan, why would you want to believe bad things about Michigan players? Do you really want to believe that one of Michigan's players has no heart and is lying about injuries to boost his draft stock? How screwed up do you have to be to take pleasure in that accusation, as some here have seemed to?

We don't have to pretend that they're all saints and model players and teammates, but in the absence of clear evidence to the contrary it seems really perverse to think that Funchess is a bad teammate and a liar.

I am disappointed but not surprised at some of these responses. I've had turf toe and now have plantar fasciitis and these injuries are very difficult to deal with when walking and especially running which may explain why some on this board don't understand how his effort was affected. Running full speed, starting, stopping, trying to adjust to inaccurate passes is all hellish. Combine that with a crappy season after high expectations when you know your team was relying heavily on you results in immense frustration. The injury won't heal unless you rest it but resting it means not being out there with your boys, lose-lose situation. On the other hand, he probably should've just played though it. Assholes.

We all knew he was hurt last year...

He would go in out of games all the time. He would get up slow/gimpy all the time.

I thought this was common knowledge. He's always been banged up (except App St.)

...sidenote, if he's not 100% now, that was dumb on his part to run a 40 at the combine and hurt his draft stock when he wasn't 100%. He can't blame anyone but his damn self on that one.

I was only able to bike at six weeks, and run at seven - that's most of a fall season for a football player. It would be nice to have more Michigan players in the NFL no matter what. Let's look forward at this point, and wish him success.

Was this when Hoke had him in on special teams, down 31, against ND?? I remember yelling at Hoke through my TV asking why Funchess was on the field.

As mentioned before, this seems more like draft excuses than reality.

It has been nearly 4 months since the last game...why have we not heard about it until now?

The fact that they (agent/player) now try and pull this crap makes me even more angry about his lack of effort and unworthiness of the number.
