FOX itself will probably only show 2 games a week, and I'm guessing only 1 of those 2 will be a Big Ten game.  So Michigan will get its share of games on FOX, but it's quite unlikely that they are on every week.  The rest will be on FS1, FS2 and the BTN, just like recent years with ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and BTN.

SI.com has learned that Fox Sports 1 will cut a number of features and news producers from its network over the next few weeks, another blow for those viewers hoping to see the network compete with ESPN in the areas of journalism, reporting and storytelling. Fox Sports is also expected to see a significant number of veteran employees leave via buyout over the next two months. Some of the departures will start as early as Tuesday. Morale at Fox Sports' L.A. office, is very low, according to staffers. A Fox Sports spokesperson declined comment on the loss of production talent."

Fox also has Big 12 and Pac 12 rights and there's always pecking order associated with these deals as well to determine which networks get first choice of the good games. Its why the good SEC games are always on CBS.

So a noon Michigan-Indiana game could easily wind up on FS1 or FS2 if Fox and ESPN (assuming they get the other half) pick higher profile games in that time slot.  It would get even more complicated for 3:30 games since you get a lot more Big 12 and Pac 12 games in that time slot.

Basically, you're going to need some sort of cable package with a lot of channels or hope Fox gets their shit together with some sort of streaming app for FS1/FS2/Fox games.

Right now between ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and the BTN, I can see every single Michigan game.  Regardless of what else is on.

I'm going to be pissed if I can't see Michigan games because of some Fox scheduling / overflow / streaming access issue.

If Fox is on a shoestring, i don't want them having the rights to any damn Michigan games.

Of course our Big Ten overlords don't give a shit about the fans, they only care about the money.  They would not think twice about selling us out and signing a deal where we can't actually see all the games.  As long as they get their cash they're happy.

Say what you want about ESPN, but their streaming services are pretty top notch, and they are definitely being proactive about the number of places you can watch it.  If there's a game on an ESPN network, I can be pretty positive I can watch it anywhere I'm at. Can't say the same about Fox, CBS, or other networks.

"Sources said that ESPN presented a non-competitive bid several weeks ago, as the company continues to look for areas to save costs."

Interesting.  That doesn't sound promising for the second half.

Or for ESPN. There was talk that the new B1G deal would be the "last" big one. But ESPN has been publicly struggling for over a year now, I would think that could be a problem. Apparently it is.

There are multiple factors at work, of course. I believe the CW is still that live events are a crucial part of a programming portfolio because people tend to watch them as they happen and therefore watch commercials more frequently. ESPN may have gotten itself into trouble with large rights payments and cord-cutting may be taking a slice, but eyeballs still watch games.

I honestly believe that the explosion of rights fees may finally slow down, but any real trouble for the industry will be more of a "blip" than a crash. As long as people continue to watch sports fanatically there will be a market for this. Once ESPN contracts to a market-appropriate size things will start rising.

Unfortunately we are still at a point where ESPN controls the national sports conversation.  And because ESPN treats sports as a business, they have tended to stop talking about things that they don't cover themselves.

During the fall, do you notice that there is a "College Gameday" thread here every Saturday morning?  For better or worse, people pay attention to that network and not to any other network.  If Big Ten football isn't on ESPN, College Gameday stops talking about the Big Ten and mostly stops showing up on Big Ten campuses.

I wonder if the Big Ten should accept a low-ball offer from ESPN rather than a better offer from (say) CBS or Turner.

Heh. Yes, this is a real issue. And for all the complaining about ESPN I tend to prefer their higher-end broadcasts and a fair amount of their talent.

The B1G wouldn't completely disappear but there certainly would be more of a lean away from them. I think Gameday tries to respect games that aren't on their networks but from a practical standpoint (Herbstreit and production staff being on location) it really does make sense to match the programs up when they can.

The B1G has its issues and it may not best the SEC in attention but it is still a ratings monster. I believe a move to Fox will hurt the B1G somewhat, and if they lose primetime ESPN/ABC presence that's a big hit.

The problem is that ESPN is looking to cut its expenses and this appears to be an area they're cutting. And if they can get ratings by focusing mostly on one conference, they'll do that. I hope the B1G can stay at least partially involved with them; I don't think the move to Fox has been all that great for the Big 12 or Pac 12.

To their credit, ESPN covers college football like it actually matters.  Fox covers it as a way to kill time until the NFL games are on the following day.  NBC is the absolute worst.  A Notre Dame halftime is mostly used up pimping the NFL.  If you want CFB scores and highlights like you get on ESPN at halftime, you have to change the channel.

The article states that the old deal with ESPN was worth $1 billion over 10 years. This deal is half of that package, but worth $250 million over 6 years. It looks like the Big Ten's tv deal is declining in value.

This seems like more than a modest increase.  10 years for a billion equals 100 million per year correct? This is 250 million for half the package, if the other half of the package is worth a similar amount (it may or may not be depending on how premium games are split) you are still looking at a deal worth close to 400 million per year over the next 6 years.  Thats an extra 300 million per year.  Even if you are splittling the pot between two extra school thats a good amount more money.  The biggest issue is that its only a six year deal and the next one is probably going to be the worst contract.

Also if somehow I misread things or my math is way off let me know.

Great of Fox to step up and fill the void being caused by the impending collapse of cable TV.  The Big Ten won't end up being the first conference to see its TV revenue shrink.

Kitty Klatt cut his teeth on Denver radio (Boulder kid) as the sidekick on the Morning Drive slot for a while.

He was brutal.  Tried being funny by doing a horrible impression of Will Ferrell doing Harry Caray (calling it his Harry Caray but a very poor man's Will impression of Harry) and was a total dud when it came to any semblance of entertainment.

But ...his color work and breakdown during games is very good.  And ...dude has a face for TV, not radio, and as an Anchor he's fine too because he's going off a script.

Twitter ...radio ...entertainer....?  No thanks.  Breaking down the QB position?  Not bad.

The guy is sort of a tool in real life as well but so are a lot of folks.
