Fisher just went Nuclear on Saban

These are all quotes from his press conference today...

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2022/05/live-updates-jimbo-fisher-responds-to-nick-sabans-claim-about-texas-am-buying-players.html

-- “Some people think they’re God,” Fisher says. “We build him up to be the czar of football.

-- “Go dig into his past,” Fisher says of Saban.

-- Jimbo Fisher said he ignored Saban’s call today. “We’re done,” Fisher said.

-- Fisher said there is a reason he has not worked with Saban since LSU. “I don’t want to be associated with him,” he said.

-- Fisher said Saban was “soliciting funds from the crowd” in Birmingham before talking about Texas A&M. “When you walk on water, I guess, it don’t matter.”

-- Fisher said he does not know what collectives are doing. “You can call me anything you want to call me. You can’t call me a cheat. I don’t cheat. I don’t lie.” Fisher said his “old man” would have slapped him and “maybe someone should have slapped [Saban].”

-- “It’s despicable for what it does for the sport, and the operations and the way things were done the other way, when the parity was there. ... There never has been parity. Certain people never followed the rules anyway.”

Aside from the fact that European soccer is on pretty shaky financial grounds, and probably isn't a model for us to follow, think about what transfers are: teams literally buy/sell players to other teams.

I don't think U.S. universities would be super comfortable with that idea.

They buy and sell the rights to contract with the players.  If they can't reach an agreement as to personal terms, then the player doesn't play.  Most of the time, this all gets sorted out at the same time, so it looks like it's all one and the same.

Let me spell this out more explicitly:

In a country in which slavery was once legal, and in which a large proportion of athletes are descended from slaves, you are suggesting that universities adopt a system in which the athletes could effectively be bought and sold from one to the other.

Do you not see how dodgy that sounds?

His comparison is stupid. Texas a&m is more like United.  Spend as much as City yet the results don’t speak for the spending.  City have an expensive squad but are coached by the best, and they have spent wisely, they are like Alabama.  A&M will win nothing and all that money will amount to Jack shit, like united

If you say so. But the 2022 A&M recruiting class hasn't played a game, so it is premature to say that all that money will amount to "Jack shit." Meanwhile, City's oligarch $$ is buying the top transfer every year. Pep (yep-class mgr fo sho) will win the table this season without a true 9. Doesn't look like like he'll have that problem next year.

Ugh? You know nothing about the owners of united or city.

City is owned by a petro state. That screams some a &m if anything ever does.

United is owned by people who got their money from trailer parks and strip malls. That's Alabama if anything ever has been.

Congrats though, you're probably 20, just started watching the EPL when you were 15 and chose city bc they were good at the time! Keep on sportswashing. I look forward to your Newcastle takes in 2027.

It's absolutely incredible that these are the two dudes that are fighting. They're the same dude. They're doing and have been doing the same shit. The second to last bullet point is the most hilarious. Sure Jimbo, you have no idea.

This, I hope, is the real benefit of NIL. Bringing to light things that have been going on all along in the shadows. I do think Jimbo is justified in what A&M did this past cycle; I doubt they broke any rules. Everyone pretends to be shocked at the dollar amounts, but that's just because they see actual numbers now.

I REALLY hope this turns into a situation of Saban throwing rocks in a glass house. He must feel very confident in the methods he's used to keep himself clean from the payments Bama has made to their players.

I just hope this puts to bed the whole "NIL ruined CFB" narrative that so many believe.  This shit's always been like this, but now everybody is free to talk about it and show off what they're offering.  I went to a D1 school that was horribly uncompetitive in football, but even those guys had fancy cars and tons of free shit.

Put it all out there in public and let people see what's really been going on for decades.  I can't fathom why Saban thought he should blow the lid when everybody knows Bama was one of the biggest offenders for so long
