A game that looked like a snoozer . . . is suddenly not.

Gonzaga - South Carolina is tied 65-65 at 7:39.

Yeah, a game that I didn't think would be much is now....a game, and a good one.

It likely won't happen now, but part of me was hoping for a Battle Of The Carolinas just to see what those two fanbases / states would come up with.

I'm not sure that would work effectively, because if SC were to decline the shots they would still have to inbound and create a 3-point shot with fewer than 4 seconds left to play. Honestly, they just took too long without finding a real shot opportunity and it burned them.

A rule that would affect this sort of calculus would be to give the aggrieved party the option to take one shot and get the ball, but that would kill late-game comebacks and that's not something basketball folks are likely to do.

Perhaps give a make-it-keep-it opion? You make the shot, you either get your second free throw or the ball? That would be used less but it would fix situations like these.

Well, if it needed to be changed, it probably would have been changed by now. The current paradigm of late-game comeback management (3-point line, shot clock) has existed at all levels of basketball for over 30 years. And while I think late-game fouling is clunky and takes away from the beauty of the sport, it has become integral to it.

And the stuff that REALLY kills late-game momentum isn't even the fouls. It is excessive times out and especially those stupid 5-minute video reviews, which were a problem both today and last night in that Mississippi State-UConn game.

Plus I stopped disliking late-game fouling so much after Michigan used it to beat Kansas in 2013.

the three of them, just going over that call endlessly was absurd.

As to the endgame, I love the strategy of it and think it's an important part of coaching.

I don't think they should have missed the second FT, but the foul was perfectly timed. I believe in fouling under 4.5 seconds, and not fouling over 4.5.

I think he should have made it though, and you go for an instant turnover/immediate foul with the full 3.5 on the clock. But with 3.5, they've put you over a barrel. It's enough time to get something off if they miss, but not much time.

on Collins, which is one of the worst calls I have seen in any tournament, ever.

That guy is a real problem. It's not okay.

why was the gonzaga player running around giving the quiet finger to the SC crowd? this wasn't some rivalry game. I also think it's about time the zags switch conferences.

Every Oregon name is seared into my brain - Bell, Brooks, Prichard, Dorsey, Enis - I still can't believe we were just a few inches away from winning that game.

and we were just one successful box out away from beating them.

But Bell, Dorsey, and Ennis are like boogeymen for me. I've been seeing those guys in my damn nightmares.

Whats with the microphones echoing about half the time.  Makes it sound like they are broadcasting over the stadium loud speakers.
