FEI Predictions: Iowa to score negative points!
There aren’t many matchups that can muster a negative “Points Against” figure, but apparently vs. Iowa is one of them. What does this really mean? I suppose it means that M’s defense scores more than Iowa’s offense?

LOL. Never seen that before and probably never will again. Iowa gonna Iowa.

Beat Iowa.

So we score a TD, and on the point after try we go for two, They intercept it, bring it out of the endzone, but then fumble, the ball goes back into the endzone where Iowa recovers it and Michigan scores a one point safety.
Is that a -1 score?

Maybe today we’ll finally see the vanishingly rare one-point safety for the defense:
Just like you describe, except that Iowa advances the ball all the way to the Michigan 1 yard line (96 yards from where the play began), where Kenneth Grant, who was lined up in the backfield on the play, suddenly appears out of nowhere to strip the ball from the Iowa ball carrier. He recovers it, picks it up, looks at the end zone 99 yards distant, and decides to go for flair instead, so he retreats of his own volition into Michigan’s end zone and takes a knee for a safety.
Ruling: one point for Iowa.
Yes, this is a real thing in the rule books. No, this has never happened in the history of the game.

It’s happened three times in CFB history. Someone on YouTube was nice enough to clip them together:

I learned something new today

That video includes three examples but is not exhaustive. The one-point safety has occurred more than three times in NCAA history.

No, the play I described has never happened. The one-point safety in these videos is different — it’s one point for the team that began the play with the ball, and therefore it can only be scored by a team that just scored a touchdown.
The one-point safety that has never happened is one point for the team that began the play on defense, and can only be scored by a team that has just conceded a touchdown, meaning you could get a score of 6-1. It involves the team attempting the try for point seeking the safety of its own end zone, 97 yards from where the play began, which is why it’s never happened — and probably never will.

I mean, the the Kenneth Grant one-point safety has never occurred, but the one-point safety has definitely occurred in the college game, though I don't believe it's ever happened in the NFL. One example:

It means Kirk has finally opens up the black hole/portal he’s worked so hard to do the last 25 seasons. He works in the science/sorcery of football black magik to appease the dark side of the football gods.
….only slightly sarcastic…..

The points come out of our, the viewers, pockets.

Better have an extra commercial break just in case
December 2nd, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
Just an extra? Surely Fox will figure out how to cram in two commercial breaks during the sequence.

We like to call that the "Brian Fergasm."

Just fucking win

Ferentz is about to unleash his full offensive might that he's been saving for decades. NNN x 500!

I just hope our players are not reading these news clippings. Iowa is dangerous and if we fall behind, they could make it difficult for us. Also, they have had two weeks to prepare for this. I expect some trick plays and other unexpected stuff from Iowa.

The game you are talking about would be the most frustrating in Wolverine history. Both sides of the ball, special teams, and coaching would all have to fall on their asses. Like the Lions against the Packers on Thanksgiving. It COULD happen if the fates allow, but no.
Nope.
December 2nd, 2023 at 11:20 AM ^
Key lesson from Lions Packers then - don't be minus 3 on fumbles on your own side of the field and you should be OK.

We have had such games, too many, before Jim. One thing Jim has done is that 99% of the time we beat teams that we should beat. That was not the case during Carr's era, for example.

That's pretty bad-ass

At least in this case, the F in FEI must stand for 'FART'.

And the impressive thing is they're in a conference championship game

The Kremlin's disinformation psy-ops is getting a little out of control.
December 2nd, 2023 at 11:22 AM ^
That is quite possible. I can definitely see our D scoring more than the Iowa offense.
December 2nd, 2023 at 11:46 AM ^
What's the O/U on Iowa's point yardage? And how do I take the over?
December 2nd, 2023 at 11:59 AM ^
Cripes, do not give Iowa any ideas on how to be more Iowa than they already are.
December 2nd, 2023 at 1:02 PM ^
Quite possible if the D stops Iowa running game, they may have to start passing, so there could be a few pick 6s.

jim marshall showed bud grant that this is not only possible but doable. actually the vikes coach was Norm Van Brocklin. and it was before my time to be fair to myself. interesting tidbit...marshall was a bucknut before he was a purple PE.
