Fall Study Break Open Thread

Submitted by 1989 UM GRAD on October 11th, 2019 at 9:38 PM

My freshman son is home for the Michigan "Fall Study Break."  Not sure what that is or why they have it, but happy to have him home for three nights.

He's already had dinner at his favorite restaurant...Sy Thai in Birmingham.  Not sure what he's going to do while he's at home, as his computer and video game gear is sitting in his room at South Quad.

I'm sure he'll sleep thru tomorrow's game.

My 10th grade Seaholm High School daughter has a bunch of friends over...and I'm downstairs listening to a bunch of screaming, loud noises, etc. coming from her bedroom.

Anyone else enjoying having their Michigan student at home for a few days?  What's everyone up to this weekend?  Apple picking?  Cider mill?  Fall cleanup?  Getting drunk and passing out?

I think your son needs a job.

Everyone is watching the game and other cf games, unless they have a dumb ass friend or family member who scheduled a wedding, bday party or other dumb ass family event. Yes these people exist, some even claim to be cf fans. 12-13 days a year people thats it.

Given that the weather is starting to turn, do you need someone to hold your balls and keep them warm while the defense is out on the field?

As a response to your second paragraph, I am proud to say that I moved my daughter's Bat Mitzvah date twice in response to the Michigan football schedule!  Her Bat Mitzvah was on December 10, 2016!

Being an empty nester, I liked reading that post.  House full of kids yelling would be great!

Left Carmel, IN for our kids fall break up to AA. We are staying at the Ann Arbor Bed and Breakfast Inn on Huron Street  (next to the church that looks like a toaster across the street from the graduate school building). Hitting a pumpkin fest with wife’s Dad in Lake Orion area tomorrow.

We spent some time at Dominick’s - the sangria is still delicious. Showed the kids the campus and of course stopped by the MDen. This place is second to none in my heart.

I wasn’t aware of this break till yesterday. I never look at the schedule ahead of time.

I only get Monday off anyway, Tuesday I never have class.

My kid got an extended break with a class cancellation today. He used the time for studying.  Michigan Difference!

wonderful high school football tonight up north in the off/on rain and wind.  big win against an undefeated team, beat them like a rented mule.  son was leading tackler, another kid i've coached for years had 5 TD's, it was just a special night.

and coaching tomorrow for the avatar twins.  football season is so sweet.  thank God for such fun and may it ripen into great enthusiasm and character for the young men who play.

My daughter didn't even tell me about this! I think I'm offended!

Granted, she's getting her engineering masters and is well into her career and I live >1000 miles away from AA now...but still!

I will be in Grand Rapids for the MISCA high school swim meet. My FR daughter swims for Temperence Bedford. She is the 8 seed in 50 free and 13  in 100 Free. Will watch the game on my phone in between.

Kids are out of school on fall break in Georgia. Walked the neighborhood looking at everyone's Halloween decorations after dinner with some friends. I can truly say life doesn't get better than this. Everyone happy, safe, and together for a time I know I'll cherish when I'm older and life has moved on.

That said, I can't go without drinking on the weekend, so ended up having angel's envy for the first time time tonight and couldn't get past the smell of ludens cherry cough drops on the nose. I guess I prefer a higher rye bourbon.  Switched over to scotch and am enjoying some Aberlour 12 at the moment.

This is my George Lilja  birthday weekend. In honor of this suspicious occasion, my car wanted a birthday present in the form of a new starter. And the garage decided to join in this celebration by ordering the wrong part. So instead of having it done by end of business yesterday, I'll be spending part of today in a garage instead of in front of the TV watching the game.

Fortunately, the MGoGirlfriend came to the rescue. She decreed that after the game, we are going to our favorite local brewery, get pleasantly plowed on a few beer flights, and then go to our favorite local dive for greasy bar burgers (because cholesterol consumed on your birthday doesn't count.)

God love that woman. Go Blue!

“Not sure what he's going to do while he's at home...”

“My 10th grade Seaholm High School daughter has a bunch of friends over...”

I can guess one stress-relieving diversion your son may have in mind.

We have our 10 year old die hard Michigan fan for a long weekend-they had Friday off. We are doing a baking/cooking extravaganza-mostly desserts. Oliver arranged this outing several weeks ago and has a long list of favorites and things he wanted to try. Yesterday we made Concord grape pie, chocolate mousse-and chocolate cups to go with, angel food cake, cappuccino ice cream, coffee chocolate fudge, tapioca, gingersnaps and pumpkin dip to go with and graham cracker fluff...and mashed potatoes and gravy-for lunch. (True to our Mennonite/Amish heritage, this is all "from scratch" cooking.) This morning we will make egg noodles with the yolks left over from the angel food cake, a lemon meringue pie and yeast doughnuts...at least that...oh, and Oliver has grilled steaks and sweet potato fires on todays menu!  And there will be the Illinois game to take in-Go Blue!!!...he has his Michigan gear along to watch the game!

Yesterday was a joyfully long day. We ended the day by taking in the local HS football game then watching his 2 favorite TV shows-Hogan's Heroes and Carol Burnett...he fell asleep in less than a minute of his head hitting the pillow-literally. Luckily we have a potluck at church tomorrow-to unload all this goodness...Lorraine Avenue Mennonite in Wichita if you want to sample :) Actually I am making one of my favorites for tomorrow to include-Apple Salad ...not sure how it qualifies as a "salad".

I wonder if the Apple Salad is like something my mother used to make called Waldorf Salad. It had apples, walnuts, grapes, and some sort of sweeter sauce. It was nothing like any salad I'd ever eaten, but I loved it.

A 10-year-old who appreciates Carol Burnett? I predict great things for that young man.

Whatever fruit you wish to include-grapes, maraschino cherries, bananas, mandarin oranges, pineapple...etc. Make a cooked dressing with the pineapple juice...then fold in whipped cream. It is much more of a dessert than a salad.

Otherwise, I can't believe I left out one of the stars of the show-Tres Leches Cakes!
