(Everyone deserves their own Hello thread) Hello from yesterday: Devin Asiasi

Submitted by robbyt003 on

Nothing on the front page yet, and his commitment was kind of bundled in the same thread as his teammate Boss Tagaloa.  This is a top 100 recruit, deserves his own thread. So here you go Devin, may we one day learn how to pronounce your last name.

He is an instant impact guy. Not sure where he fits just yet, but his first step at Defensive End is incredible. He's one the most athletic 6'5 260 pound TE/DE prospects I've seen. In his video, he also plays Wildcat QB at THE DE LA SALLE because he is so athletic.

scored a TD on the play.  He's one of those players who you see and say "Wow!!!".  Amazing speed and running ability for a guy his size.  I could see Harbaugh using him in a variety of ways.  For example as a fullback out of the backfield in short yardage situations.  He could also be a devastating lead blocker on sweeps or screens because of his size and running ability.  He's clearly one of the new players who could help us next season.

He ranks in the top 50 of our highest rated recruits since 2000. Has 5 star potential before getting coached by Harbaughs. Very likely to play as a true freshman. Very excited to see what he can do.

Jim Chaney as their OC. He's from Pitt, and due to my brother being a die hard Panthers fan, I've seen almost as many Pitt games as I have Michigan. They use their tight ends well, but at Pitt, their best weapons were always at RB and WR, so the vast majority of the production ended up there.

Give Chaney a weapon like Nauta and I think he'll thrive.

I agree. Upshur should probably have beent the third TE instead of Asiasi. From what I see, Nauta is more groomed, college ready, while Asiasi has the ability to become a better player than Nauta. All three will probably be very good college TE's though and most definitely will move on to the next level.

For the same reason Emmitt Smith had a better career than Barry. Better team, better results. Plus, we know Harbaugh can develop TE talent and will feature the position. Skill doesn't always match success.

Apparently Asiasi was also a stud at DE. Which is obvious by now what Harbaugh likes, multi-skill, multi-position athletes. Not so much so they can be used their, but the key indicator of competitiveness, flexibility, and multiple talents/awarenesses.

My guess is Harbaugh uses him in as a running/blocking FB as well as TE.

Dude's a beast.

Love this kid. I don't think we have anyone like him on our roster. A nice combination of size plus speed and hands. He is the most ready of the TEs. With how the TE class went, everyone should be very, very happy!

Gary will make a terrifying TE.

As an aside, love your username.  I met my wife at a toga party down at LSU - she was dressed in an elegant green satin, while I had wisely chosen a sky blue flannel covered with clouds, rainbows, Winnie, and the statement 'pooh-licious' scribed all over it.  Go pooh go!

If you watch some of Gary's no-pads drill-running clips, it's unreal. And I watch a lot of athletic movement tape (non-football)

He moves like a 220-lber. It's more similar to a WR in the NFL. I'm not exaggerating. I think I got so blinded by the #1-ness (and the fact that a majority of popular footage of him is slow-motion, or him going one-on-one, which is problematic when analyzing movement), and all the edited footage of his recruiting that I never sat down and analyzed his basic movement.

His speed is crazy. C-r-a-z-y.

Everyone likes to drop the "Physical Freak" label, and first off, he IS (because that is a real thing), but second, "physical freaks" still have to put in the insanse amount of work and practice. Especially in sports, where freak-ness can easily be negated.

There was a great news article where Harbaugh commented on his academic work-ethic and how Harbaugh was very impressed by it.

And if Harbaugh is impressed by someone else's work-ethic, that speaks Volumes with a capital "V".

The kids got the best of both worlds. Talent AND Execution.

It's lethal.

Welcome Devin!

Definitely excited about the future of the TE at Michigan. I think Devin made the perfect choice coming here. As JH says, you get better at football by playing football, and unlike other schools, here the TEs get to play a LOT of football.

Well we're certainly "Tight End U" now, with at least six TEs - all very good - on the roster.  Jake Butt didn't go pro, which is a good thing, of course, but I'm scratching my head when and where the others all will see the field over the next few years.  The fact is, the three TEs in this class are potentially all as good as Jake; and then there's red-shirt freshman Wheatley, also an elite player.  And Ian Bunting.  And Khalid Hill.  Clearly one or two of these guys will be playing another position at some point to see playing time.

Wheatley may move to DE, which according to most experts is where he has the highest upside. Eubanks and McKeon probably RS this year. Butt, Hill, and Bunting are the most likely rotation, Poggi is in there as well. Asiasi is the one who may see the field this year, maybe a second coming of A.J. Williams, but with more opportunities to be a receiving threat.

When I saw him, I also thought of that former Patriots TE as a comparison to playing style and look.  I think you're spot on too about him needing to reshape his body and shed a few pounds after he gets here.  That and some great coaching and the sky's the limit for him.

I love that our recruits are so versatile.  So many were stars on both sides of the ball.  Hill and Long were great receivers.  Asisasi was stellar on defense.  Nordin kicks and punts.  Hudson is a receiver, RB, DB. Could say this for Mitchell and Hawkins(WR, DB).  I guess we just recruited extremely versatile athletes like the best SEC teams.  Good things coming on the field.
