EDIT: Harbaugh Receives Additional Salary Due to a Prior Contractual Agreement, Totally Unrelated to His Actual Job Performance

$500,000 bump:

I am sure there will be a lot of Negative Normans out there about this - and plenty of "what, he gets an extra $100,000 for each loss?" kind of comments - but I, for one, think the guy deserves it. He lives UM football. Now, If we're 8-5 again next year, this will get trickier to justify. But two 10-win seasons immediately after the HokeRod era? That's miraculous...

EDIT: Title has been changed to more accurately represent the facts. Some efficiency of words was lost in the process, I fear...

dont get your point at all. It was already in his contract, and seeing what the Raiders just paid Gruden I think we should be thrilled he is not jumping to the NFL right now. What I really don't understand is the logic that he eeds to prove something to you to deserve his pay, you do realise the year before we got him we were giving tickets away with the purchase of 2 20 oz cokes right? The AD was set to lose money for the first time in forever the following year until he got here, than instantly there was a wait list for season tickets for the first time in a decade. He creates a hell of a lot more revenue than he is paid, you should be kissing his ass. You reek of entitlement man

So it's ok that he hasn't won anything as long as he keeps butts in the seats and keeps the PR machine humming? I know where this program was before he got here. If faithfully been to a game(s) every year since 99. There is no doubt this program is in tremendously better shape. No one can argue that. But has what he's done warranted the third highest salary in the country? That's all I'm saying. I hate Brian Kelly and don't want him anywhere near this program but he's the 65th highest paid coach on the country. He doesn't need to prove anything to me, really cool how you put that twist on it though. Don't be a dick I'm just trying to have a conversation.

I pictured him weeping while typing his post. Made the whole thing 10x more hilarious. It also reminded me of the scene in “A Beautiful Mind” where Russell Crowe is calling the workers for the psychological hospital Russian spies.

I understand what you mean but I think the problem is normal humans, you and I, for example, get wages and raises largely based on past outcomes and to a smaller degree on future production.  For coaches 'future production' plays a much larger role.

I do agree somewhat though.  I would rather see that money go to assistants or *gasp* the players.

Um... I would like for our HC to be at least a shrewd enough man to have regular raises built into his contracts.

We might not like the W-L record at which it happened. But it's not bad to see long-term planning, carefulness, intelligence, wisdom, etc. in a HC

And I don't think we can do better at his position, so if those who have the money wish to back that contract three years in advance, I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

You don't sound like an OSU fan, in and of itself. I'm sure you're not, lol. I just think too many of us on here forget just how bad things were a mere 3 years ago. Yes this year was a bit disappointing but we had an extremely inexperienced team and due to injury were forced to play 3 QBs, two of whom were not JH recruits (or at least 1.5 of them but I refuse to blame him for JOK). This program was in shambles 37 months ago.

8-4 when PFF predicted 9-3 (and assumed Speight would play 12 games) really isn't worth shitting all over JH for. We've been competitive in all losses to the point where if one call or play had gone our way you could make a strong case for a W in all but one game in Harbaugh's 3 years. And the rest were wins.

I'm not trying to shit on JH. I think he is a great coach and will, eventually, get us to where we want to be. But look at the coaching landscape. Look at who's making what and what kind of success they've had. After taking a look has JH earned having a top 3 salary?

And the loss to PSU was not competitive at all.

I understand that and maybe I listen to the media and other fan bases too much. From day one the media has said he will come in and turn the program around overnight. To an extent I guess he did. And maybe an 8-5 season after year three has left me a disheartened. I am optimistic and do trust the process. I'm not giving up on JH at all yet.

He did not get a raise.  His income went up based on a previously signed contract.

Drevno did not get a raise today

Brown did not get a raise today

Hamilton will not get a raise in April when he is due a 425K bonus

A raise isn't a raise if it was based on a prior contract? That's a really weird way to look at variable compensation.

So if a CEO has a contract that pegs variable income (raises and bonuses) to some indicator (e.g. stock market performance), and the CEO meets those benchmarks but the company does terribly overall (this happens all the time. See: Dave Brandon), then it "really isn't a raise/bonus" because it was "based on a prior contract"??? Hmmmm....
