Eagles Release Jason Avant
As a UM/Eagles fan, I've had the pleasure of following his career for the past decade. I think it is the right football move by the Birds, but sad nonetheless

Please read the comments for a sense of what Eagles fans think of him. He is up there with Brian Dawkins in fans eyes.
I am not a huge NFL fan - mainy just cheer for Michigan alum. Thus - I am anxious to see where he lands. He is a great 3rd or 4th WR and great locker room leader.
Don't forget feminine plural "alumnae," as in "All three of these women are Michigan alumnae."
I want to see "Lions sign Jason Avant" by this afternoon. 2pm e.t. at the latest.
THE MOTOR CITY KITTIES AWAIT!
I would say he'd be a great addition to the Browns as a veteran presence across from Josh Gordon but we've already got Devon Bess under contract for that and he hasnt posted any naked twitter pics of himself getting stoned or gotten arrested in airports in over a month so I think we're good.
he's too high to remember his Twitter password.
You may have spoken too soon mGrowOld. There is a picture going around the internets of a penis wearing one of those little Browns helmets that you get out of gumball machines. 2-1 it's Bess.
That would be the key thing to look for to confirm it's him.
Look above at jtmc33 's post
"Lions slappies"?
I've been a Lions fan my whole life - you think name calling hurts more than watching my favorite NFL team "play" football every Sunday?
You can do better than that
I find it quite humorous when other teams' fans try to make digs at the Lions or their fans. Like seriously? I root for the goddamn Detroit Lions, what on earth could you possibly say that I don't already know and/or could get under my skin?
Lions fans are essentially sparring partners for world class boxers. Our NFL hopes get beat up and ko'd for a living by the hardest punchers in the world. Having someone slap us in the face feels no different to us than a fly landing on the nose of someone else.
IIRC, made one the greatest 1 hand catches in M history against Northwestern.
Go Blue!
He stole one from Tacopants
Whenever I think of crazy, insane, one-handed catches, that's the one that immediately comes to mind. I remember seeing it at the time, and I've never forgotten it. No one I can remember could bring in a catch like Jason.
I actually travelled to see that game and that catch alone made the trip worthwhile, in my opinion. Absolutely phenomenal, and indeed, probably one of the few times Tacopants has been intercepted. You have to be pretty damn good to get in the path of an otherwise easy grab for Tacopants, but Avant did it.
...that Avant did that in his old hometown of Chicago. That is, if a kid from the South Side could ever regard the north shore in Evanston as his hometown. Anyway, a real nice time and place to do that.
Probably my favorite player coming out of all of the years of Coach Carr's coaching tenure.
It's telling that the Eagles owner commented as well. There's a whole lot of respect for Avant around that organization.
Hopefully he goes to a team that has a chance to win the SB. What about Brady and the Patriots? They have a need at WR.
Can we have him back?
in the league that couldnt use Jason Avant on their team or in their locker room. Underrated player. Great leader and a class act.
actually, I think there's one team.
He is a cap casualty, they didn't cut him for sucking it up on the field. If he wanted to take a nice paycut I'm sure the Eagles would welcome him back with open arms.
My friend once remarked, "Avant can catch a slippery pig in a soap bubble." He is now a M.D. so his words hold even more credence. Good luck in your future endeavors, Jason.
he finds a new team quickly. But even if he doesn't, he's had a very good NFL career and he would be getting out while he's still healthy.
more than likely he stays with the Eagles just under a new contract.
Come back to the Mitten!!
How come nobody has mentioned him for a possible assistant coaching position?
After taking into account all the recent coaching position changes, I think he'd be a perfect fit for a LB or OL coach.
I believe you just did. But he's probably not done yet with his playing days.
Never made flashy plays, but caught everything thrown his way and moved the sticks. Also a willing and strong blocker in the run game. Dependable and durable, exactly what you want in a slot receiver. He will be missed.
That said, I'm excited to see what a Desean/Maclin/Ertz/Cooper/Celek tandem can do next year. Foles will not be lacking options in the passing game even without Avant.
Broncos. It looks like Decker is going to be too pricey so they're in the market.
As someone above mentioned, the Eagles only released Avant due to salary cap limitations.
The Miracle at the New Meadowlands does not happen without Avant's block. Plays like this define Jason Avant's NFL career.
Who would have thought that he has a better pro career than Braylon by that time? Just looked at the catch and the video clip, we were so talented by that time.
