Dumb bye week question

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

This is remarkably stupid, but can someone describe what the bye week schedule actually looks like for the team? Obviously, coaches seem to be doing more off-campus recruiting this week, including coach Harbaugh.

Is there more video work, with just enough practice to keep sharp? Is it mostly a focus on the younger players, as they had witht he split practices?

Also, does the quality of the opponent change your bye week plans? A&M has a bye week this week and then plays Alabama, where Michigan plays Illinois, for example, so does that change the way each stafff approaches the week?

Sorry this is an obvious question, but when I played in high school, I don't recall actually having a bye week.

Think most of the students go home to their families if they are far away and have time. My brother ran into Poggi on a plane back to Baltimore one year during their bye week.

I believe one of the coaches mentioned, within the last couple years, that many players will go home for a couple days because of the bye. They're not suddenly allowed to practice 7 days/week just because there's no game. They actually get a day off.

It helped us catch up on our work, and typically coincided well with a big mid-term push. To that end, it gave an extra day to focus your studies at a mid point in the semester. Actually really useful. If students had free time, they could go home for a few days, but my friends rarely actually left.

I was playing 2014 a few days ago. While it was still fun, I'd really like an Xbox One version with current teams. Plus there is still the shitty BCS in the game.

The team and coaches are calling it "improvement week" during this week's practice. I'd imagine it's more like fall camp (focus on fundamental improvement and playbook expansion) than a normal week of practice where you're gameplanning and installing the gameplan. I think they get the weekend off.

Sam Webb said that the all the starters got this week off of practicing - outside of Speight working on timing with the receivers - so they could get extra time to work with the backups and young-uns. Next week will be back to normal.

i have heard that some coaches use 2-3 days in the first week to work on "trick plays" or "schemes" to be used against an important opponent down the road (ie. OSU).  The week leading up to the game is typically normal work against the upcoming opponent.

Get Peppers some work as the zone read QB.  He's pretty damn good at it.  We are going to need it for more than one series.

Opponents (and I mean you, Ohio State) having to prepare for a pro-style offense and a legit spread offense has to be an absolute bitch.

Probably some rest time for the team, recruiting for coaches obviously. I would think this is the time they might work on some creative game planning for teams like msu and osu, but maybe they already have a loose plan of when they want to unleash new plays throughout the season.

different players are doing different things. Some are resting, some are practicing- like Speight and wideouts for timing- and some are hitting film harder, while others are catching up academically, etc.

don't know what Harbaugh does, Hoke gave the kids a few days off practice completely. I think one of the players interviewed said he was ready for the bye and that a lot of guys were tired because they have been going hard for 2 months straight.

Bye week is typcially when most likely one person does something dumb in their home town and get suspended or in the news. See: Chad Kelly and others this season.

Hopefully we get through it.

Hoke's teams at least looked competitive against Ohio State, we didn't even belong on the same field as them last year.

2011 won by 6 in Ann Arbor, 2012 lost by 5 in Columbus, 2013 lost by 1 in Ann Arbor, 2014 lost by 14 in Columbus. Last year we lost by 29 at home, far more embarrassing than any Hoke-led teams.

Hoke was a couple plays from a 3-1 mark against Ohio State, and even the 14 point loss was a 1 score game in the 4th until a fumble that OSU recovered.
