Is Don Brown on Maryland's short list?

Submitted by Tunneler on November 1st, 2018 at 12:08 PM

A horrifying thought I know.  Just saw the question posed to Steve Lorenz on 247.  Is it possible they could poach a 2nd DC from UM?  Please god, no!

I'm sure he could land a better job than that if he wanted to.  I just hope he doesn't want to, because the money would be there.

Doubtful.  Brown will not want the headache this late in his career.  I'd bet they stay with Canada, who seems to have a firm grasp on the situation.  The "hot" up and comer isn't going to touch this job: a mess and in B10 E!  They get a recycle coach if going outside.  Schiano would be a fit under normal situation, but he's tied to Sandusky. Maybe Brady Hoke!

Maryland can't afford him.

The one good thing about Durkin being jobless is we can hire him back if Don Brown ever leaves/retires.

I suppose never say never, but I believe that if he wanted to be a HC, he probably would’ve done it by now.

Its not like he all of a sudden has he great defenses. They’ve been great for a long time. I’m sure schools have contacted him, and if he wanted it, he would’ve gone.

I think he even said in a press meeting a year or so ago when asked if he ever wanted to be a DC that he “was too old for that crap” or something like that.

Tbh, personally I am not worried about losing him. He is old, and in a perfect situation. I just don’t think he leaves unless he is forced to or he retires. Now, maybe if like the LA Rams or someone wanted him as DC I could kind of see him shooting for a ring, but that seems unlikely.

He made a comment earlier this year in a press conference when he was talking through the targeting penalties that he was happy that he was closer to the end of his career versus the beginning.  So based on that comment, I would hope he would not have any desire to be a head coach at a second rate basketball school program and the glory of a name like Michigan would keep him anchored here.  That being said, anything is possible and Oakland may still be in play.  Bottom line, pay the man like LSU did with their DC so he does indeed have the desire to remain a Michigan man.

It's not a horrifying thought, it's a comical one. Age aside, if Brown was looking to be a head coach, he would have better options than the dumpster fire at Maryland. If Maryland doesn't just promote Matt Canada (which might be the smart thing to do), it will almost certainly end up with a Jim McElwain/Butch Jones level retread (and will probably overpay for the privilege).

Who realistically can Maryland get that is Matt Canada?  I think they will be lucky if they can hold onto him for a few more years.

Canada isn't coaching greatness but he's better than any other real chance they have.

Don Brown isn't getting sucked into the suck of Maryland.

Here's the thing.  He's 63 years old, and maybe the best in the country at what he does (college DC).

Does he have some burning desire to be a head coach again?  If he does, then we are screwed.  If it isn't Maryland, it will be someone else soon enough.

However, if I'm Don Brown, I Iook around at Michigan, the kids I can bring into play defense for me, and my $1.4 million a year contract, and say "this is pretty damn good".  Yeah, as a head coach he could get another million or two a year, and that is big-time money.  But right now, he pretty much has job-security for the rest of his career at one of the best programs in the country.  He doesn't have to think about anything but coaching and recruiting defense.  He seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy, and being able to just focus on defense and avoiding all of the other junk a HC has to deal with in 2018 probably appeals to him.

And $1.4 mil a year in Ann Arbor is more than enough to live like a king.

I know this is all in jest, but I assume Canada will be taking over.  Maryland has been...fine with him at the helm, and nobody with better options would go there.

At 63, reputation and legacy probably mean more than $$$.  We also have no idea how much he knows about offense.  We also have no idea about how Michigan landed him (sure $$$ but probably sold him on taking a good defense to the next level).  His legacy here is ironclad, he should get a fat raise, and he sacrifices his reputation if he leaves for a tire fire program with a morally bankrupt board of regents in a way crappier college town.  Frankly, the only advantage I see is that he would be able to see his Bosox at Camden Yards and tour Inner Harbor Baltimore with the wife.  It's nice, but I would never leave A2 for that.

I had a conversation last winter about this.  Coach was offered millions of dollars last year from a school in the SEC.  Thankfully he is still our coach,  people will keep trying, I hope we can keep him.

If I were Maryland, I’d love Don Brown, but I don’t know if he’s what I would solely target. I’d probably check my options for this year and what there may potentially be next year. It’s early enough to start to scan the feelings, (Brohm’s DC, Ryan Day, Whatever Saban assistant is newer [to Alabama] who is looking at the next “Easy” HC gig— the Butch Jones type) and see if I could even interest them. If not; you leave Canada in there, and secretly start the next search... worst case, you hire Canada as your long-term back up plan.

Keeping Brown would be as important as landing the #1 recruiting class x 5 if you ask me.  Extremely important to the program.  Must be retained.

Why would he want to end his career as a so so HC of a screwed up program when he can go down as the GREATEST DC Michigan has ever had?

The guy is 63 years old. I don’t foresee him taking a head coaching job, much less one like Maryland where he’d be setup for failure in one of the toughest divisions in the country.

I love Don Brown as much as the next guy but given all factors (age, HC experience etc), Maryland Actually may be out of reach for Him IMO. Also, With Kevin Plank pushing to get the MD program better, I think you're drastically underrating the MD HC job. No matter who is hired, if they get rid of everyone involved with the players death/toxic environment, MD will keep making headway with the local recruits and they'll continue to improve. Plank's  alma mater is now the top local HS program, and they are likely to start funneling recruits over to Md.
