DocSat: OSU drops "interim" from Fickell's title
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Ohio-State-…
I agree with his conclusion that this move likely is solely aimed at calming the nerves of potential recruits and their families.
Its really a tough situation for Fickell even if he wins the Big Ten theres a good chance they will replace him.
if he wins the B1G, they keep him. raback it!
that they would get rid of him if he was able to pull out a Big Ten championship after the off season that they have had. That being said, it won't happen.
Steve Fisher, but about an ncaa title
I mean Steve Fisher wasn't fired in 1989, he was fired the better part of a decade later and for ummm... irregularities, not performance.
He didnt mean Fisher as in getting fired but the Fisher that took over the UM team right before the tourney and ended up winning the title for UM in 89.
THAT'll stop the bleeding...
It's gotta feel like they're trying to save the Titanic by bailing water with a handful of dixie cups.
Or a cork. I think they're trying to use a cork.
doesn't help the fact that the OSU coach for the 2012 season is still a question mark.
It's a classic marketing ploy. Nobody would buy "Diabetes Delights." But they might just try Krispy Kremes...
Indeed, it's a rather fickle tactic.
I see what you did there.
I can't start a new thread but 247 sports did a top LB classes for 2012, Mich is number 2
http://247sports.com/Article/Top-2012-linebacker-classes-29972
Gotcha buddy.
All this means is he'll be getting fired so a bigger name coach can come in instead of "stepping aside." It doesn't change anything. He should still be more nervous than a drummer in Spinal Tap.
I disagree. Fickell will not be coaching at OSU past this season, but this does put him in a HC job for next year if he can keep them from completely imploding.
We all pretty much agree that he'll be coaching this season. I'm talking after this year when name candidates can look at the punishment the NCAA has dished out and decide it may be worth it in the long run to throw their hat in the ring.
But had this all not happened, Fickell would probably be sitting as a position coach at OSU in 2012-13. Now, he has a good shot at being the HC at a halfway decent program (probably no lower than MAC) after getting to be OSU's coach for a year.
Don't forget Gordon Gee.
The original comment was about Fickell being "worried" or something to that extent. Fickell should come out of this better than he started. He'll live up to the new expectations and take a MAC job at the end of the year; OSU isn't going to fire him if he's leaving already.
For his sake, I would want to go to the MAC to cut my teeth THEN come back to OSU AFTER they get shit out the bottom of the NCAA sanctions.
The linked story says that an OSU spokesman has come out and said his job is still temporary. I really don't get how that will benefit recruiting in any way since opposing coaches can still negative recruit the situation like nothing changed.
And you know they would drop him faster than the spedometer on Pryor's vehicles if Urban Meyer showed ANY interest in the job in t-minus 7 months.
I agree. Recruits and their families aren't stupid.
He's no longer the interim head coach. He's the permanant head coach. For the moment, anyhow. I mean, if Urban Meyer becomes available...
"Listeners learned that Fickell failed to return terrelle pryors phone call before the embattled quarterback's exit from the team because he was at a Taylor Swift concert"
That's a good question...who would you rather have to listen to, Swift or Pryor? That's a cruel, cruel decision to force upon a man.
I wonder what the soundtrack to Manball is?
Rage Against the Machine.
Guess I am gonna say AC/DC, even though I don't know why I am saying that . . .
AC/DC is Australian. MANBALL is 100% American made. I'm thinking the soundtrack to Rocky 4.
Think "Kathmandu"... full blaring horns, hard rocking guitars, a Michigander pointing and yelling at the top of his lungs. And no matter how old the song is, everytime you hear it, you want to run through a wall and sing along.
Yeah, but she's better looking

y u gotta be so mean.
Heh. Gruden...
Gruden is like Big Foot...a cryptid seen often but who, for all that I can tell, doesn't really exist. Every time Gruden's name comes up in relation to OSU's coaching search, I'm going to take a shot and laugh like a maniac.
P.S.- I really hope Fickell calls up Kalis and sez: "Kyle, have you heard? I'm not the interim head coach anymore. Do you want back in, big guy?"
I don't know why he'd ever leave Michigan for OSU anyway....he's our coach, right...?
OSU dropped one "interim" from his former title of "interim interim head coach."
Uh-huh. A permanent coach that happens to only have an interim contract with the athletic department on record saying they'll be doing a coaching search in the fall.
That's much better. /s
...and partly the change in the organizational chart. Gee now reports to the Trustees directly, instead of through the head football coach. When they change that back to the way it was, we'll know Fickell's no longer "interim".
one year left on the contract. They modified his current two year deal to add more money not years...(he only had one year left). You need to be carefull with Gene Smith's quotes...cause remember there may not be any "proof" that the conversation occurred.
Tell me who the next AD will be and I'll tell you whether Fickell stays.
...the equivalent position will be
http://oaa.osu.edu/studentlife.html
You'll note that she's also served as an assistant athletic director, to get some experience for what her job would entail after the AD position is eliminated.
She's got Maryland connections. Maybe they can hire Ralph Friedgen?
They removed "interim" from the title but he is still a lame duck head coach.
And he probably won't be able to win the conference if the NCAA rules in time to give them a likely bowl ban.
But if the Buckeyes win nine games including Michigan I bet he stays. And I don't think that possibility is so implausible.
Does it really matter what name they give him if they are just going to releive him from the job at the end of the upcoming year? Basically they are playing games with Fickel, and it is really not fare to him. Unless they took off the "interm" from his title and are sure they are going to keep him beyond this up coming season, then I don't see it much of a difference whether or not the "interm" is there.
In a couple different articles from ESPN it would seem like Meyer is not to interested with the OSU job. One was from his daughter mentioning that her dad does not have interest in coaching OSU, and the other was from him saying he wants to coach in a place where the climate is warm.
Is Luke Fickell now the "Doomed" Head Coach?
