Do you think UM would be undefeated against Clemson's schedule?

Submitted by Chaco on November 22nd, 2019 at 9:29 AM

pointless speculation I suppose.  Clemson is talented for sure but in looking at their schedule this year I concluded it was hard to tell how good:

GT

TAMU

@ Syracuse

Charlotte (the mighty 49ers)

@ UNC

FSU

@ Louisville

BC

Wofford

@NC State

Wake Forest

@ South Carolina

If we played their schedule this year, Texas A&M and UNC would have been close games. At least one of them losses, based on how we were playing at the time those games were played.

Let's look at it this way... How many of these games would people drive more than 2 hours to attend:

  1. GT -- ONLY BECAUSE IT IS OPENING DAY
  2. TAMU -- YES
  3. @ Syracuse -- ROAD GAME
  4. Charlotte (the mighty 49ers) -- NO
  5. @ UNC -- ROAD GAME
  6. FSU -- MAYBE (FSU 2019 is a train wreck)
  7. @ Louisville -- ROAD GAME
  8. BC -- NO
  9. Wofford -- HELL NO
  10. @NC State -- ROAD GAME
  11. Wake Forest -- ONLY BECAUSE IT IS SENIOR DAY
  12. @ South Carolina -- ROAD GAME

I hate this line of thought.  "Let's play a bunch of scrimmages that no one wants to watch and claim we are some powerhouse."

I want to watch us play meaningful games.  Losing sucks, but at least there is something on the table to play for.

One thing I don't think a lot of people realize is that Clemson is obligated by state law to play two schools based in South Carolina every season. One of them is obviously the yearly game with the Gamecocks, but that means they also have to play either Coastal (which they only did once back in 2009 when they were still FCS, I think there's a political thing there with Clemson not wanting to give them money to build their program up as a FBS team) or one of the SC FCS teams. They don't have a choice about that, which is why you always see Clemson and South Carolina playing some terrible tiny FCS school based in SC every year.

No.

Flawed teams find a way to lose to teams that on paper don't make sense. It's why the dumbest thing people do every offseason is find a team that was between 8-4/10-2 the year before that has a soft schedule and name them a darkhorse title contender. It never pans out.

Great teams find a way to show they're great even with a weak schedule. Clemson had the one blip against UNC, which has turned out to be a real feisty team that's just a bit young and is struggling to finish games, and has otherwise woodshedded everyone they've played. Michigan almost lost to a completely wretched Army team. The way Michigan was playing early in the season on offense before Gattis figured out what Shea/OL could do and when the defense was still figuring itself out, it loses either the UNC game or the Texas A&M game, maybe both.

Inasmuch as we've had just three regular seasons without a loss in the last 50 years, I'd say it's unlikely we'd get through Clemson's schedule without a loss, but holy hell they've got it easy.

This isn't even a question!  Of course Michigan would be undefeated against that schedule.  So would PSU, UMinny, Wisconsin, USC, ND, and pretty much any other team with half a pulse.

However, Clemson will arrive to the playoffs in peak condition and health because they won't have to assert themselves.  They'll play a really good game, with well practiced schemes and options, starting the best players money can buy.  Dabo will dazzle reporters with that fake-ass 'aww schucks' routine, and we'll learn how much Clemson just LOVES football - because football means more in the south.

(I'm not jaded...  LOL!  I sound so jaded...)

Was gonna say yes, then remembered they played Texas A&M in season opener* (3 losses: Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, all top 15 teams). Who interestingly still has to play both Georgia and LSU.

* as noted below actually 2nd game.

Second game of the year but yeah, if Michigan plays like they did against Army they probably lose to A&M.

Side note: A&M is likely going to have a five-loss season where all of their losses are to teams that were in the top-8 when they played.

Hmmm...hard to say.  T A&M would surely give us a run for our money as would Syracuse on the road.  I think we'd have a good shot, but guarantee.

Pre-Wisconsin Michighan, no.

Michigan since 2nd half of pedo state, yes.

There are really only 2 dogs on Clemson's schedule -- Charlotte and Wofford (who is regular ACC and SEC out of conference fodder).

Clemson fans could say the same thing about Michigan playing Rutgers and the like.

Maybe, but this Michigan could have been undefeated had they played slightly better against PSU and gotten a bit more consistent performance against Wisconsin.

TAMU in week 2 is the only one I would wonder about, given where our offense was at that point.  But at home, we would probably have been 60/40 to win at least.  The rest of that schedule is hot garbage.

This question really comes down to, would M have been able to beat TAMU at home in Week 2, because outside of that, there is not a team on the schedule that could've hung with M even when they were figuring stuff out early on.

And, I think Michigan gets by TAMU in the same fashion Clemson did. An ok day by Lawrence/Patterson and some good defensive stops. The Aggies are not Wisconsin. While they have only lost to teams that are in the T10 this year, they have also only beaten Arkansas by 4 and Ole Miss by 7.

So, let's take it a step further; playing Clemson's schedule - how many B10 teams would be undefeated? I'll stay conservative and say 4.

I’m not sure what anyone wants from Clemson. They can’t help that their conference has tanked. Plus they’ve tried to schedule one legit non-con annually. Played Auburn recently. Texas A&M was very good when this season was scheduled. Have four with Notre Dame. Have games with LSU and Georgia coming.

OP did note that this was pointless speculation, and I hope this isn't interpreted as 11 on the Jerk Scale, but: DEAR GAWD WHO CARES?!

We need to get over our major institutional roadblock and get back to beating down MSU every year and defeating OSU. We have other things to think about rather than "Would we be undefeated if...we played in another B1G division, with someone else's schedule, or if we played in the FCS."

Stay on target and focus those M thoughts into warrior vibes for the team, the team, the team.

we’d be 9-1/8-2

A&M week 2 would have been a tough out. They’re on par with the best teams we’ve played this year. Wisconsin/PSU would be 7-3 with their schedule too. Losses to Clemson, Auburn and Alabama.

otherwise, UNC played Clemson to a stalemate.  Given our early season offensive woes, that D would have held us under 10 points.

we were not great at the start of the season. Can’t polish that turd.

There are 20 teams across the big ten, pac 12, big 12, and sec that would be undefeated with Clemson’s schedule.  I would love to see a 538 analysis of that.

scfanblue

Yes they would but let me point out that Clemson’s football schedule this year has nothing to do with their ranking. They are the defending national champions and they are easily a top# 2 team. Clemson’s offense and defense are ranked right there behind OSU at #2 and they have experience. The only team that could possibly beat them in the Big 10 is OSU

Michigan fans need to remember a couple items. #1 Quit whining because someone else is consistent enough to win at the highest level possible almost every year like Clemson, OSU, Bama etc. #2 When Michigan is coached to be consistent every game instead of shitting the bed in the big games and having to play over time games against lesser competition then they will make the playoffs and possibly win it all. All of the playoff teams play like a champion from day one in August. Michigan plays great one week then looks like they can’t beat Ann Arbor Pioneer High School the next week and that is coaching motivation and preparation.

Army’s point total was low, but a lot of rushing yards, could t get 3rd down stops, and time of possession were issues. Exactly what army wants to do, but they aren’t 2028 Army, they are bad, defense was an issue
