Director Warde Manuel: not wearing mask will be treated as violation of team rules

Dir. Warde Manuel is having a virtual presser right now. Here are some interesting notes.

https://twitter.com/chengelis/status/1273674690725326849?s=21

Manuel says there’s a policy for student-athletes   If a (student athlete) disregards Policies (wearing a mask etc) Will be treated like breaking a team rule   Reiterates won’t have them sign a pledge or waiver

Manuel begins by mentioning victims of police brutality. Says U-M will support players kneeling if they feel it's appropriate. "Many of our black student athletes are hurting. I’m hurting as a black man. It’s something we’re going to continue to work towards and fix."

Michigan has conducted 221 tests with two athletes testing postive. (Both asymptomatic.) The school is working on a surveillance program that includes testing athletes in batches throughout the season.

Manuel says UM will not isolate athletes in hotels “they’re not professionals” says they won’t “isolate from fellow students”

But I was told that every school would have their players sign "waivers" just like OSU and everything would be fine!

Sounds quite reasonable across the board.  Glad to see he's being up-front and consistent.  It does sound like he's being more realistic about the scope of sports this year, where people will likely turn out to be infected and there will be a lot of uncertainty but if you're consistent in your approach you'll know how to handle it.

What does the mask provision mean exactly?  Are they to wear them all the time (including during practice), or just in the locker room and so forth?

It's a good question and I don't know the definitive answer, but I assumed it to mean while walking around facilities and even around campus, but not on the football field. I can't imagine trying to push through extreme physical exertion with a mask inhibiting your oxygen flow.

I'm being daft here, but are they going to wear masks during workouts?  My wife made me a special 3-ply with silk and whatever else is supposed to keep you safe (St. John's Wart?  Giant Toe Jam?) and walking through Lowe's I nearly passed out from lack of oxygen.  With all of the heat related deaths in past years I'm assuming they aren't wearing masks during the workouts.  ...but then they aren't social distanced.

That's all fine and good, but I have a medical condition that puts me at risk when I wear a mask.

Under ADA guidelines, I am not required to disclose my health information. Thank you and good luck.

(Also Meijer doesn't enforce it and home depot gave up recently)

Home Depot has no regard for anyone’s well being or personal safety.  I went in the other day, no wipes for the carts, no one wiping handles of carts, I watched them just push carts back into the building, self checkouts have handheld scanners no wipes, no sanitizer.  When I asked for a wipe the associate told me there were none, I asked when the last time it was cleaned, she didn’t know, I put my stuff down and left.

I get it some people have relaxed their standards but to see the blatant disregard for those who want to protect themselves due to high risk health situation from others who are going more rogue with this is concerning to me.  I will never go back to Home Depot because of this.

maybe I’m overreacting, I just don’t feel like they give a shit if it spreads to high risk individuals due to their neglect to supply people with a compliant environment to shop in.

rant over, I feel better, thanks MGoBlog!

Just hope they can keep cases down for the players collegiate careers. Plus our sanity needs some sports. I've watched every jock movie I can fit in!

https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Provisional-COVID-19-Death-Counts-by-Sex-Age-and-S/9bhg-hcku

Out of 100,000 Covid deaths, 125 are people under 25. There are almost 100 million people in this country in that age range. So in statistical terms, this is as close to zero risk as you can get. I'm pro mask, but as long as the coaches don't mind, there is really no reason whatsoever to make athletes wear masks, especially when they won't in the huddle.
