Dilemma regarding traveling Paul Bunyan Trophy
In summer of 2018 my Sparty Brother-in-Law bought a Paul Bunyan trophy replica during a visit to his Alma mater. He declared with glee it would be a traveling trophy. He of course had it for a few months and it now resides permanently in my home.
The question is if we should make it an “against the spread” traveling trophy. I love the idea of keeping it, but it seems it might be more fun if there was an actual chance of it changing hands.
Give me your drunk vote below. It will likely determine the fate of Paul Bunyan!

Forget the spread. Keep Paul until sharty wins the game.

Straight up. Fuck your brother in law.

This is the correct answer.

If he would have extended the same generous offer to you last decade, I say do it.
October 30th, 2020 at 9:30 PM ^
Nope. Money line only. You'll have to lay so many points for Michigan over the next decade that you may never have it in your home.
October 30th, 2020 at 9:33 PM ^
No mercy. Straight up.
October 30th, 2020 at 9:42 PM ^
If he came up with that suggestion that's just embarrassing. If that's yours, nice thought, but as Coach Reilly once said, "it's not worth winning if you can't win big."
October 30th, 2020 at 9:42 PM ^
Fuck that. Build a trophy case for it.

Mahogany

Put maize pants on it.

? winner - don’t need to spot him 20 something points every year. Make his team earn it back!
by the way, I have the trophy at home and enjoy it! We have miniature helmets for Michigan and Michigan State. He has not worn the Michigan State one since we purchased it two years ago, and I don’t know when he will wear it. My wife went to Michigan State. It is great over the basement TV. We also have a little brown jug down there - it is also always faced towards the Michigan side since I purchased it.
go blue!

Straight up. Keep the trophy. Don’t give in. Center piece for all holiday gatherings.
October 30th, 2020 at 9:47 PM ^
Send a picture for a participation trophy.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:41 PM ^
I actually do this already. Haha...
October 30th, 2020 at 9:52 PM ^
Straight up, winner only .
October 30th, 2020 at 9:56 PM ^
OP, if you make it spread-based you'll never [1] see it again. :)
[1] I can't say this is data-driven, but I'd bet that Michigan hasn't covered the spread more often than not since the '90s.
October 30th, 2020 at 9:57 PM ^
Against the spread? Fuck that. That's every loser Sparty's go to now. They need to continue to eat it.

Buy a small (little brother) version of the trophy - ideally a keychain version.
This way he too can have something to hold all year, in this case a daily reminder of being little brother.
The "Defeat With Dignity Trophy", if you will.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:06 PM ^
The coaches and players play the game to win. Not to kick a field goal as time expires to cover the spread.
straight up

I love it! Keep ‘me coming. I’m gonna send him the link to this thread.
Guess I better start working on my trophy case! Go Blue!
October 30th, 2020 at 10:09 PM ^
I have learned this the hard way: never give the points on an honor bet. If your team doesn’t cover, you feel like you lost even if you won
October 30th, 2020 at 10:09 PM ^
This is an insane idea. Spread doesn’t matter. Just win baby
October 30th, 2020 at 10:16 PM ^
Keep it. It will be fun to have the entire decade!
October 30th, 2020 at 10:17 PM ^
No spread...straight up just like the real thing
October 30th, 2020 at 10:21 PM ^
no way. the trophy stays home, at your place, and hopefully is there for at least a decade before a transfer is even contemplated.
p.s. not drunk though, so you don't have to count my vote.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:23 PM ^
Don't complicate things. Win or lose.
Either that or fantasy football the heck out of it.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:23 PM ^
Winner take all - keep the trophy and adorn it with a winged helmet. He can visit it on holidays
October 30th, 2020 at 10:25 PM ^
Whoa nelly... remember the spread in 1991 vs. MSU? ...
Yeah, neither do I.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:26 PM ^
No dilema, straight up game, no points given or taken.
BTW- where did you get the replica?
October 30th, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
He got it at State on a visit. It isn’t very large. Like a large Christmas ornament really.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:31 PM ^
I say no, treat it like the real one just between the Michigan and MSU alums
October 30th, 2020 at 10:32 PM ^
My sober vote is that making it ATS is the only way he’ll get it back for a while. He declared with glee; you should declare with glee that his team will have to win it with a win, not a defeat with dignity.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:33 PM ^
I would say regardless of outcome, keep Paul home as we want to slow the spread. He may be an asymptomatic carrier.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:33 PM ^
against the spread? you’re fuckin ten-ply, bud.
give your balls a tug, titfucker.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:45 PM ^
Let’s see. First post ever. Incoherent, angry, sexualized attack. Sexual innuendo in avatar.
Anyone want to bet a Paul Bunyan on the O/U for this guy’s trip to Bolivia? It’s set at one week.
October 30th, 2020 at 11:28 PM ^
Your life’s so fucking pathetic, I ran a charity 15k to raise awareness for it.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:37 PM ^
If you take that bet....you're an idiot.
Sparty won't win or see Bunyan in at least 10 years if that.
Will upvote you based on comedic factor though.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:41 PM ^
So he would proudly display a trophy that celebrates that his team lost to their bitter rival by 21 points instead of 22? That's dumb as hell
October 30th, 2020 at 10:50 PM ^
No way, there's the fun it in maybe changing hands, but you also the security that you get from not having to worry about it if you go by W/L.
October 30th, 2020 at 11:01 PM ^
make it based on the spread
such a little brother comment

Hubris always gets you in the end. Mark Dantonio is a prime example of that.
October 31st, 2020 at 7:53 AM ^
Forget that. Win or gtfo. Let him wallow in his hubris.
