Did Warde Manuel do everything he could to keep Beilein?

Submitted by 1201 on May 14th, 2019 at 7:45 PM

Because when he said he "was surprised" that Beilein left it made me cringe and think that he never made a godfather type offer to keep him and that he didn't have his finger on the pulse of things. I get that Beilein wanted to coach in the NBA, and maybe Warde did all he could behind the scenes to keep him here, but it doesn't feel like it from the outside looking in. It's not my intention to dump all over Warde today but given the news leaks in the past 48 hours and how this whole thing has gone down it really makes me wonder. I think it's a question that needs to be asked and answered because if this were the football coach things wouldn't be accepted on face value alone.

There is no offer that could have been made to keep Beilein from taking the job.  With that established, what is the over/under for the click bait posts you’ll post each day throughout.  You have nothing to base your assertion on, you don’t know what has or hasn’t been done but I’ll give you an A for effort on leading the witness.... If you truly believe that any offer could have saved Beilein, you are delusional.  You’re a smart guy tho and you know Beilein couldn’t be saved.  So what’s the motivation for this post? It’s almost like you are just trying to sows seeds of discontent...what’s the agenda?  You of all posters aren’t actually looking for readers opinions to gain insight or other points of view.   Tell us, what realistic offer would have saved him, it doesn’t exist.

Conspiracy theory time!

What if all these Maizen accounts are really like Brian or Seth or someone and they this is all intentional to create more clicks and views? Could be an elaborate play for more ad revenue.

He also said he got had as list of names put aside for in case of emergency. What's he going to say? "You're not allowed"?

I think he has a teeny bit of a point here.  I know that he considered the Pistons job, but this was not a particularly poetic ending to the tenure of a beloved coach and the “cavalier” nature (pun very intended) of the departure is baffling to be sure.  JB loves college basketball for 30 years and then “to hell with that I’m going to the fucking Cavs.”  Wut?  I don’t think any of it will ever be aired, but I don’t think the whole story is in the public domain.

Dude... he has no point. Warde is the same guy who kept our baseball coach after it was a given that he was going to go to a more baseball friendly school. Warde came in and shot the money cannon to keep him.

I find it stupid hard to believe he didn’t do everything to keep Beilein who’s successful in a revenue sport.

The circumstances are just a little bit odd to me.   This thing seriously happened overnight, seemingly.  Was it reported anywhere that he was even interviewing?   I certainly don’t recall it if it was.   I guess it just didn’t seem like Cleveland had to work that hard to get him.     To me, it lends itself to speculation that things were not hunky-dory.  I guess I am surprised that he could and would bolt this easily and quickly no regrets style you know?

(Edit - and he just got boned in the draft-lottery, sucks to be him on that note).

I’m not on the ledge man.  Everybody has been freaking out about this and I have been like “OK let’s go new guy!”

Perhaps you can honestly say that you are not surprised in the least that John Beilein is now the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers but I cannot in good faith make such a claim.

I imagine there wasn't anything Manuel could've offered (besides an obscene amount of money) that would'e changed Beilein's mind. He couldn't offer:

The only level left at which Beilein hasn't coached. The final challenge of his coaching career.

A level recruiting playing field-- unless Warde would provide the necessary bag men. Something I doubt Beilein would even have wanted.

Players that were more than one-and-dones. Players that would stick around, buy into Beilein's system and flourished the way those in the past have.

The college game has changed; I don't blame Beilein for decided it wasn't the game he wanted to be in any longer. And I'm not sure what Warde could've done to change his mind.

How is there a level playing field in the NBA? It’s an extremely top heavy league where the top players all conspire. When was the last time an 8 seed beat a 1? Beilien will be on bottom 5 team and probably never sniff the playoffs, let alone win a series.

The horseshit Sparty troll in my office who claims he has a contact in the Michigan AD, says Belilein was pissed about some request to get the locker room recarpeted that took six months but the football team had a similar request that was approved immediately. The story goes that his wife told him that if things were that frustrating, that he should take the next offer he got.

This story conveniently lends itself to the theory of why he would take such a horrible job if he could have gone to Orlando last year.

This troll finds new and creative ways to hate Harbaugh every day. You should have seen the shit eating grin on his face when he walked in the office this morning.

The MSU fuck in my office is the director.  He regularly reminds anyone who will listen to him that he has multiple M grads working for him but he's never had to work for a Michigan grad.

Fuck him.

Biggest asshole I have ever met in real life.

The epitomy of little brother.

Well that sucks. Usually Spartys that venture out of Michigan are a bit more classy about the rivalry. That certainly seems to be the case here on the east coast & what I’ve seen in my travels.

The big exception to this of course is Chicago. Denver is fast becoming the new Chicago (non-coastal city that people from the Midwest want to move to out of college) so perhaps that’s it.

It never fails. Somehow all of these sparty's and buckeye's have connections and inside info about Michigan that actual Michigan insiders don't have.

It just makes so much sense that all these people inside the AD who have such loose lips don't share anything with any of their associates or UM fans they know, they save it for their MSU and OSU friends to share on their message boards...

I really find it amusing that the same people who wanted Beilein gone as recently as February, 2017 are now aghast that he left.

Money was never an issue... Maybe he simply wanted a crack at the NBA.  In all honesty, Belein has done so much for Michigan. He took us to the championship game twice! That's huge.
