Did the football team or basketball team have a better season?

Submitted by swalburn on

I'm not trying to start a flame war but football and basketball seasons were polar opposites.  In your opinion who has had a better season as of today?  Football was undefeated and lost 3 of last 4 in heart breaking fashion and finished #10 in the country.  Basketball was all over the place but extremely hot the last 10-12 games of the season and will be hanging a Big 10 tournament banner.  They just upset Louisville and will be no worse than the Sweet 16.  Is the football season still more of a success?  How far does the basketball team have to go before you would characterize their season more successful?

None of this matters but it nice having two successful programs.  How important is postseason success?

We'd like to have won everything but 10 wins is not bad – the glass is more than half full. I'll let you know what I think about the basketball season when it actually finishes! I'm happy where we are at the moment. I'm thinking back to a little over a month ago when all the chatter on MGoBlog was about how terrible the team was and how soon Belein would retire. That was a little embarrassing to see here.

celebrate in the locker room with water guns or cut down a net (put a rose in their mouth) or win a championship deserving of a banner/ring?

They did a backflip after the Rutgers game. It's not even close, unfortunately.

Big things to come for football, though.

For football my preseason expectation was anything less than beating MSU and OSU and making the B1G championship game would be a disappointment.

For basketball my expectations were that a team who returned everybody from a tournament appearance last year should win at least one tourney game and hopefully make the Sweet 16.

So basketball exceeded expectations by adding a tourney championship while football disappointed by failing to close at the end of the year.

Football had a better regular season, ended poorly.

Basketball is having a better post season, but was attrocious throughout much of the regular season.

Depends on your expectations at the beginning of each season.

Football came in with sky high expectations and a senior-laden team that was to compete for a national title. The team closed the season poorly, losing 3 of its last 4 games, including losing to OSU for the 13th time in 15 tries. The defense that never gave up big plays gave up a ton of them in the Orange Bowl. The football team underacheived relative to expectations.

Basketball was probably supposed to have a 'meh' season, probably make the tournament asa bubble team but lose in the first weekend and not make a lot of noise during the season. But something clicked after that OSU loss, and they've been near unstoppable ever since. They steamrolled the conference's best on the way to a B1G tournament title, beat a vastly underseeded OK State and a national title contender in Louisville. The basketball team, at least late in the season, has vastly out-performed expectations. They're now a legitimate Final Four contender.

Success is also largely determined by the hardware you bring home. Football brought home none. The basketball team already has a tournament title under its belt, so one could argue their season is already more successful. If they manage to make the Final Four and add another banner to the collection, this won't even be a debate.

I would have to say Baasketball.  Winning the Big10 Tourny was a crowing achievement, but they further cemented it by beating Louisville.  The football team, although they had a good season, did not get into the Big10 champtionship game, the CF playoff or gain a win over Ohio State.  Any one of those would have evened it up.  Give the love to the basketball team.  I guess a near death experience can do wonders for your motivation.

Won B1G tournament and Sweet 16 Football had a chance to go to playoffs and squandered two games in the last minute of each. Football team wants to forget the season, basketball they will hang a banner
