DG medical redshirt status?

Submitted by MichTits on

It was announced today, according to ESPN, that Case Keenum will be granted a medical redshirt for this year.  Good for him, I hope that he can stay healthy for his last season.

I wonder if that means that we will be hearing the status of Devin's medical redshirt soon.  What are the feelings of people more in the know than I am about what the outcome is likely to be?  The last I heard it discussed, there did not seem to be much worry that he wouldn't be granted it, is that still the case?

They couldn’t submit the paperwork to the NCAA until after the Gator Bowl. If Denard had gone down in that game, Gardner would have gone in, and that would have been the end of it.

You’ll probably find out when they publish the roster for spring practice. I don’t have any serious doubts that it’ll be approved. The previous coaching staff seemed pretty sure about it, and medical fifth-years are granted pretty routinely.

I was wondering about this as well. With Hoke's history of offensive scheme, I think it's extremely important Gardner gets the redshirt. Then we can flex the offense around Denard for a couple years, but slowly shift toward.. dare I say.. a pro-style offense. IMO Devin would be a great fit as a dropback passer with Vick-like scramblings capabilities. Given his documented back and knee problems, this shouldn't be a problem?

I don't see why he wouldn't get it.  There were guys that played much longer into the season and still got the medical reshirts.  I think Rodgers was one of them.

Given the NCAA's impartial and evenhanded method of dispensing justice I would not only not be surprised if the request was turned down...I would not be shocked if they declared him a Junior in eligibility to punish us for asking.

We arent Auburn after all and we don't play in the SEC.......rules are different up north.

One thing I've wondered about is how he could have been legitimately injured but never appear on the weekly updates about injury status, e.g., Shaw - probable, Williams - out. I don't remember seeing his name on an injury report.

I think the NFL requires accurate information about injuries partially to avoid corruption related to gambling. Is that right?

Does the NCAA have requirements about reporting injuries to key players such as your second string QB?

I'm just wondering, but if Hoke decided for whatever reason that DG needed another year to refine his skills or for future depth purposes could he redshirt him a second time? Because he would have only used the medical one the first year.
