DCC: Greg Mattison

Submitted by Space Coyote on December 23rd, 2020 at 12:39 PM

Track record dating back over two decades of success. Has demonstrated he can turn around really bad defenses and make them solid in year 1. Has connections to Michigan and Harbaugh. History as a top recruiter. Young at heart.

But mostly because it would be funny

I'd be fine with this.  Let Mattison redeem himself for being a traitor by using his knowledge of the machine down south to improve our program.  Tim Banks can help us better our recruiting (based on Penn State's strategy) and clean up in Detroit.  That's d-line and safeties covered.  And we get to implement Ohio State/Penn State strategies and methodologies to fix up our apparently disorganized recruiting operation

*y'all hung up on the word traitor, I mean it in jest since he went to our chief rival.  Obviously he was somewhat pushed out while also pursuing a better opportunity, so I mean no ill will.  He was great while he was here and I be ecstatic to have him back

Mattison is a former NFL DC, former National Championship DC, and former DC at 3 major programs.  He was passed over twice by Harbaugh (Durkin and Brown) for guys with less experience and less of a track record. He left to Ohio when the Michigan Defense was getting obliterated yet no changes were being made.  You can’t call him a traitor after that and you’re not going to hire him into a co- job with a neophyte after that treatment.  He should be our DC already and he does have deep ties to the Harbaugh family but why come back to a program that treats you like that.

He left when being obliterated and no changes made? Um he left immediately after the one bad game they had against OSU in 2018. What changes would me made in that time period? He was not passed over for Durkin. He interviewed for the job he got. He was treated absolutely fine at UM. That being said I would only take him if Harbaugh wants to go the hole coDC thing.

Rumors, all I have are rumors, but it was said he wanted to offer a couple more scholarships to some big beefy defensive tackle types and was told no.  (This would help fill the gap we have today.) I thought the d-line count looked okay when he left but someone else would know way better than me.

Pure speculation but his demeanor during and after the OSU game was that of I told you your game plan wouldn't get the job done and look what we have to live with. After game, no supportive comments, just a review of the facts. (Admittedly, he may have been on his way to OSU already so who knows?)

He didn't get passed over for Durkin?  I don't recall he ever said he wanted less responsibility.

Mattison is a grown ass man who's left Michigan for a rival twice and you're painting him like a victim.

His DL not getting any pressure was the primary problem in the blowout game he left after. The current DT void is largely due to the guys he recruited transferring or not panning out (future DT void he has little responsibility in). He has a lifelong connections to Hinton and Hutchinson through their dads, assured them he would coach their sons, then left for OSU. Come on.

He recruited great DT when he was in charge under Hoke.... then as DL coach under Brown he has to go after the prototype player Brown wanted, which was small and quick.  Cannot lay this on Mattison....no way... no way he would want such a small line and have a Kemp or Mason play DT...

Cannot call him a traitor either, even though I did, because was pissed... but, he was passed over...twice, for DC.... Harbaugh could have done something creative like OSU did, bring a guy like Hafley as co-DC and make him do all the travelling and grunt work...

Mattison was DC for the Ravens...was DC for Meyer...   to think he would be happy being DL coach and having to go small and under Brown, is asinine... seriously...  in this light, it is quite surprising Meyer didn't grab him earlier.   Cannot expect someone so accomplished to be working under someone else, especially when he knows the gimmick D won't cut it in the Big Ten.

Having motivations for a betrayal doesn't mean it's not a betrayal. I just don't like the guy after he left but I'm fine with anyone who wants to call him a traitor.

How is it a thing that he wasn't allowed to recruit DT-sized DTs? They landed a bunch of huge dudes in '17, just whiffed at the position in '18, signed Hinton/Mazi in '19 and recruited a bunch of other big DTs who just didn't want to come. You imply Mattison wouldn't play Kemp at DT if it were up to him, but Mattison recruited Kemp before Brown even got there and already had a habit of turning SDE guys into DTs (ex: Lawrence Marshall, Matt Godin).

How is it known Mattison thinks Don Brown runs a gimmick D? People state this as a fact but as far as I can tell it's all projection.

Losing Mattison was a bungle. Have to call it a mishandling from how it looks in the cheap seats. He probably should’ve been DC from the start. He brought a tough D. Not having an idea of his feelings and preventing his leaving is hard to reconcile.

He was pushed out by John as Ravens DC who helped him with a soft landing in AA under Hoke Jim kept him on when he arrived and paid him at a DC level even though he was the d-line coach.  I think it was a dick move for Mattison to go to OSU where he wasn’t, and isn't the real DC.  He’s essentially Brady Hoke-an excellent d-line coach and good recruiter but no track record above that. He was treated well by the Harbaughs and Michigan and then screwed them to go to OSU.

That he was pushed out of Baltimore was not what I heard. Which was that John Harbaugh initially refused to let him out of his contract and then had a change of heart. Getting demoted for Durkin (along with a $500k pay cut) and then passed over for Brown had to sting. Brown's greatest success was the first two years with all the Mattison recruits. Mattison's recruiting prowess is legendary and his pride was damaged. Why wouldn't he be amenable to a co-DC position with twice the pay?

I HATE that he went to OSU. And yes, he certainly looks to be all about the money. But I blame Harbaugh more for making a really talented guy feel unappreciated.

I’m dying!! Oh no Hutch would leave. He was non existent prior to his injury. The DL got the same amount push they got post his injury....none

Let’s rehire everyone still alive that coached for Michigan at one point.  Since we can’t move on and think outside the box around here, give them all lifetime contracts and just put things on cruise control.

Yeah, I get that, but that title only makes sense if there are two co-coordinators.  What the fuck does it mean to be a "Co-Defensive Coordinator" where there is a full Defensive Coordinator that does not have a "Co" in front of his title?

Kerry Coombs is THE defensive coordinator for Ohio State...
