Day after thoughts and reflections: A revisiting of the ND game, with video

Submitted by FL_Steve on

So my sorrows have faded enough that I wanted to revisit the positives from the game and gather a sober prospective; shame there wasn't much difference.

What was apparent:

  • The cards were stacked against us as always, and the state of IN did everything it could to insure that the game was close enough for excitement while staying firmly in Irish control. (Seriously half the offensive plays, the ball was spotted almost a full yard short).

  • The soft spots of the D will improve as Dwumfour showed promise but lacked consistency (the depth I observed was hopeful as well, Hawkins hype was legit, bummer though, and that drop ugh, but still)

  • QB looks good for the future. McCaffrey was great and I cannot imagine Petters entering ahead of him from here out (though I bet my brother a sushi roll Petters doesn't transfer at years end)

  • The O-line looked better than initial impressions, though there were some serious errors there was also a noticeable improvement (interested to see how the line will grade out for this one)

  • I think our next true test will be Wisconsin (maybe because its the next game I'll be back for, and/or maybe because I'm not that confident in NW)

I found this entertaining as well (it's probably buried in the board but wanted to share it in conjunction with the ND highlights, makes it easier to stomach seeing other difficulties around the league):

The refs did not stack the cards against us.  That was honestly some of the best reffing I've seen in the last year or so of Michigan games.  Just give it up.

Can anyone comment on the "locker room" problems being referenced? (AGAIN).

Last year our SJW QB and his drivel seemed to rub folks the wrong way.

What is it this year?

I mentioned this last week in a post about the captains, but I am sure Chase's outgoing personality, off field attention, and hair might rub some people the wrong way and not want him as a Captain. Chase comes across as super confident guy, but sometimes confidence is misconstrued as arrogance. Not saying that is the case, but i wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Also, Chase seems to be quite frank to the press. I could also see him being that way with his peers. Just the fact that he said the other day "it was a personality contest" isn't the smartest thing to say (i was actually shocked he said that). I am sure more than a few of those captains (and other teammates) took that as an insult. I would have, if I was just voted a captain by the TEAM.

After watching the first half, I feel slightly better.  Just about every drive killing play in the first half begins with JBB.  Runyan makes a couple mistakes but problems seem to begin on those plays with JBB.  Some plays JBB is just standing around, not engaged with anyone.  Other plays, he let's his guy go by.

Really, I'm not one to try and make that shit show feel better with excuses but to me, it's replace one guy and I think things get significantly better.
