D-day Morning Open Thread

Could the rumors be true? Have we ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Will we have a head coach in the next 12 hours?

Maybe we will get a surprise coach like Patterson.  DB had to be doing some kind of business in Dallas since we know that he interviewed MIles in Baton Rouge.  We can't forget that DB has said that some people have contacted him about the HC job so there has to be more than Hoke and Miles out there.

So he could ascertain Miles interest and seek his advice and say privately to any big Miles supporters amongst the U of M family that he discussed the opportunity with Les but Les said no thanks and recommended the next coach as a great hire for U of M.

So, announcement of someone else with all bases covered including Miles and Carr?????

he seems very happy at LSU and that his family is very happy there too. He just finished an 11-2 season and his Tigers should be a Top 10 or even Top 5 team next year.

Michigan is a great place to be also. But I think people are really diving off the high board on this whole thing. 1 + 1 does not equal eleventy billion.  Christ, a meeting took place.  That's it.

Miles is probably interested in the opportunity and what Brandon has to say.  LSU fans cannot blame him for this interest.

But being interested and accepting the UM head coaching position (with all the tacked-on, fan ,admin and alumni conditions, such as, for the love of God, don't hurt the alumni's feelings by installing any spread offense plays!  UM football right now is an ugly and incomplete construction project where the previous contractor got shit-canned.

Les is 57.  At some point he has to be asking himself "why should I take myself and my family from a comfortable situation in Baton Rouge to quite possibly a very uncomfortable one?" and  "Aren't I getting too old for this kind of shit?". After all that's gone down with Lloyd's departure, Les Miles would be right to ask himself these questions.

Everyone is saying "Les has to come home".

Right now he's winning at LSU and that's his home. Ann Arbor won't ever be his home without winning first.

I could be wrong.

At any rate if Miles is taking the job, I hope he goes Colonel Jessup on MSC, Brandon and all UM alumni across the planet:  "I run my unit how I run my unit!"

Very much agree with this analysis. With Miles, fans' expectations are going to be sky-high, and if he doesn't immediately meet or exceed those expectations, fans are going to quickly sour on him. I can't imagine Miles wouldn't take that into account if Michigan offers him the job.

With Hoke, the expectations are going to be much more reasonable and thus more likely to be met.

In the end, the only thing that's going to mend the "fractured fanbase" is winning--particularly beating OSU and MSU--and contending for Big Ten titles again.

I understand your argument and I agree somewhat, but Baton Rouge certainly has not been overly friendly toward Miles since he took over for Saban.  From everything I've read, the natives have been restless for a new coach for a couple of years, and to say they have no perspective would be an understatement.  One year after he led LSU to the title, people were already calling for his head because the team had lost 2 games.  I think that's why you see so many coaches in the SEC burn out quickly and leave - the pressure is unbelievable to win at all costs, and for most of them it just becomes unbearable.  People may bitch and moan in Ann Arbor, but my guess is that it is still far more welcoming than being attacked mercilessly for going 11-2.

I have a strong feeling that Les Miles will not come to Michigan, and we will forced to name Brady Hoke as our next HC. I hope Les comes, because in all honesty I'd rather have kept RR than get Hoke.

I thinbk it will depend on who Miles brings in for OC - if it is a guy who supports the spread attack, Denard will probably stay because he'll still be the highlight threat.  That's why Hoke was such a scary choice - he was going to revert back to the old pro-style setup from the Bo/Carr eras, and that would have meant another paradigm shift.

I would be deep into overtime on this website. I take full responsibility for the problems with the server. I am so tired of reading the rumors. Please God...make it stop.

Miles is such a known commodity to Michigan, and particularly DB, that I can't see DB conducting a long interview or sell job.  The longer yesterday's meeting was, IMHO, the more likely it was about process than yes or no.  I could well be wrong but that seems most likely to me.

will literally explode and destroy the entire internet if there is an announcement that Miles is returning to LSU.  Entire computers will combust right in front of your eyes until there is only ash.  Not saying that such an announcement is going to happen, but it will be quite the seen if it does.

Doug Karsch on 97.1 just said that--based on people he's talked to--the idea that Miles to Michigan is a done deal has cooled down this morning. He thinks Miles, Hoke, and "unknown candidate C" are equally likely right now.

More proof that everyone is guessing. Last night Michigan met with Miles so everyone assumed that they would get a deal done. Now, because a deal hasn't been announced yet, they are assuming that the deal fell through. They don't know anything.

Nothing against Doug Karsch - I really have no opinion about him either way - but 97.1 has been one of the worst offenders in terms of misinformation and outright falsehoods throughout the RR era and the coaching search that I have a hard time taking them seriously at all.  I think Miles has the inside track of taking over, and "unknown candidate C" is probably some non-starter like Gruden or Malzahan (sp?).

This was just added by Tom Dienhart on Twitter:

'Michigan will meet with Les Miles and/or his people Tuesday, media reports indicate.'

Is this someone following up on yesterday's report that UM and Miles would meet today, or is this new and Brandon and Miles are planning on meeting again today?  Didn't Brandon fly back to AA last night?  Is he still there?  If so, where is this meeting taking place?  Do we know any tail numbers of any LSU planes? lol.
