Current Scholarship Count-96

Submitted by TK on January 5th, 2022 at 11:01 AM

I “believe” my figures are correct on this. I made a notes section a while back and have been updating them as changes occur. This list is everyone who has eligibility to return who has not made an announcement. I did not include Hutchinson because that’s somewhat stupid and pointless. I suspect guys like Ross and Moody will make an attempt at the NFL rather than use the extra Covid year. Obviously we expect Dax to go. There will be a few guys that probably wont be offered a 5th (or 6th) year, and of course there will be a few more playing time transfers. If I have messed anything up, let me know.

And yup I already made a mistake. Two number #12s for OL. Good thing we can edit. Oh wait.
Anyway, make that 97.

I have them at 99.

  • OL: I still have Stueber and Filiaga (your second #12) listed. I don't have inside sources.
  • DT: Whittley still has another year of eligibility.

It's policy here not to speculate on specific guys being subject to attrition because it feels like fans trying to push guys out, but unofficial head count after guys I expect to leave or have heard rumblings about do so puts them somewhere between 89 and 92 right now.

By the way you can edit your posts. I turned that on.

I did not include Steuber because he has announced he is attending the senior bowl.

How does Whittley have another year? He played for Laney College in 2017-2018 and played for Oregon State in 2019 then sat out 2020. Seems like this would have been his final year.

Also, how do you edit an OP? I guess I don’t see where you do it.

Ok I don’t think it really matters because I doubt Whitley would stick around as a 26 year old who has already graduated anyway, but that’s not how I interpreted the Covid rule. I didn’t think it meant everyone got to play 5 seasons, I thought it meant that 2020 didn’t count towards your eligibility. 2020 was the “free year”. He sat out 2020 and played his final eligibility season with UM as a grad student. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I interpreted the rule.

Whittley: You may be right: I was surprised too! I'm going off of what others told me when I said he has to be done because my calculations had him out of eligibility this year.

  • 2014: Committed to San Jose State as a 6'2/225 RB, but didn't qualify and took a year off.
  • 2015: Didn't play at Laney College (Medshirt)
  • 2016: Didn't play at Laney College (Medshirt)
  • 2017: Played at Laney College. (Freshman)
  • 2018: Played at Laney College (Sophomore)
  • 2019: Transferred to Oregon State and played in 14 games, starting one (Junior)
  • 2020: Did not play because of a heart tumor. Also COVID anyways.
  • 2021: Played in 8 games for Michigan (Senior)

Bowman probably sticks around as 3rd QB (2nd if Cade bails)

CB's we have Will Johnson, McBurrows, and Perry who are depth behind Green, DJ Turner and Gray - Will Johnson may even start, plus some of our safeties can probably play CB - we have around 10 of them

I think Harrell can play the Ojabo position - Aiden is obviously the guy we need to replace - this is the one spot I agree if there is someone worth getting do so, although Moore may be a stud that contributes right away

So we are 12 or so over the limit and you want us to hit the portal to bring in more guys? I mean I guess if there is an Oluwatami type player who is a DE, but I don’t see us adding a bunch of backup depth from the portal at positions that are already somewhat over-full.

I think you’re numbers are pretty spot on, the list I have is at 101 but I still have Dax, Jordan Whitley, and Kolesar (I know he’s not on scholarship yet but he made it into the 2 deep this year which usually means a scholarship is coming).

Still have a long way to go but with the new transfer rule I’m happy for the guys that haven’t gotten to play can leave without penalty. I’d still expect a few more at DB,  DT, and QB. WR will be interesting because with Bell coming back technically the entire group could return plus adding 3 freshman. Michigan did a good job this year of spreading around the wealth so everybody got the ball. I think they would like to keep all 11 but we may lose one here.

To comply with the boards rules, no specifics.  However I do see 9-12 that can / will leave the program for various reasons.  So in the we will get to 85 without much drama.

I would find this year to be of particular outlier as all programs will have to recalibrate to get back to 85.  And with the COVID free year been used up, the extra players above 85 around college football will have a massive game of musical chairs across the country.

I do have a question.  Is there any set deadline for next year for the 85 scholarship limit.  I would expect so and that will only lend to the frenzy that we are about to experience.
