Our friend Jon Johnston (of "There is no hope.  Fuck everything.  Go Big Red" fame) weighs in.

Dude is old. He's seen his team win more national championships than any living Michigan fan. I don't get why people think Nebraska fans deserve special sympathies. These guys were utter bullies for three decades (with plenty of rumors of cheating) and made a point of running up the score in conference games at a time when that was still frowned upon.

Then their hubris got the better of them and they fired a very good coach in Frank Solich and then made one meh hire after another. How on earth is that something that should result in any sympathy? At one point you were really good and now you're kinda mediocre? Oh well.

People act like these are some long-suffering loyal fans as if their team was NM State or UTEP. In reality there's nothing particularly surprising or unusual about people being Nebraska fans in Nebraska. Who else are they gonna be a fan of? There's no other football team of note in that state.

In addition, it's not like Nebraska has been terrible for a long time. Pretty much everyone there over 25 remembers them being at least a good team, and the dudes over 35 can easily remember them being a NC-winning elite team. What are we supposed to give them a hug and a high five because they stuck with the only DI football team in their state through a few lean years?

Solich's main issue was that he could only muster a 75% win rate in the wake of the just-retired Tom Osborne, who holds legendary status in Lincoln.

Callahan was their version of RichRod - an outsider hired a bit hastily that never really fit into the Nebraska culture.

A Pelini-Hoke comparision works in some ways in terms of the reasons they were hired, though Pelini's ties to Nebraska and desire for the head job were much weaker than Hoke's ties to Michigan.

Both found themselves a bit overwhelmed in the head coaching spot at a big-time program. Pelini managed to win at about a 70% clip compared to Hoke's 60%. On the other hand, Hoke sounds like a much nicer, more laid-back guy than Pelini.

I find this guy very likable.  He's a good dude (to the best of our knowledge), who's experienced REAL life, loves his Huskers, and knows they're OL is terrible...which...yep.

"Fuck everything.  Go Big Red.  Let's stay together.  Take care of each other.  We'll get through this!"

His lips to God's ears, you haven't experienced all life has to offer until the shear accuracy of his sentiment reverberates in your soul!

The Huskers behind me today we're good dudes and clapped at the end of the game as the very last second disappeared from the clock,  regardless of the outcome for their team.

That's a long drive from Lincoln to drop cash, witness a slow motion bludgeoning, but still appreciate collegial competition and fandom in the moment of defeat.

They meet B1G football reverence from my perspective, and seeing football in Lincoln is definitely on my bucket list.

Go Blue, and I'll take Red over Scarlet 10 times out of 10...we're keeping those little corn munchers with us, Big 12 (for now), but we might swap you The Rutgers for...hold on...I don't know... probably should just go back to the Big 8 and call it a day.

Jon must have tuned out before Moody kicked that last FG.  Gotta love this guy though.  I'm now a fan of his.  There are a lot of shitty fanbases across the country, but Nebraska fans are the best IMO.  They certainly deserve better.

Funny how Bo Pelini won 8 or 9 games every year (along with the 4 loss seasons like Michigan has in mid 1990s) but that wasn't good enough. Bo was a dickhead for sure but won 71% of his games there. They've won 40% since Mike Riley, Frost, and now Joseph.

They would be best going after one of the Kansas-based coaches (KSU or KU).

He seems like a super good person.

Allow me to comment on the heart thing from a different perspective: I had open heart surgery in 2015. If down the road you find yourself with a health issue, and I hope you never do, here's something that might help:

Attitude is everything.

When I regained consciousness in post-op recovery, I felt I jumped out of an airplane and saw the parachute open. That was the moment I realized, "Wow, am I ever lucky."

In the following weeks, I kept repeating the mantra, Attitude is everything.

When I got home, I did goofy things, like listen to Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries with full orchestra and singers every morning to get myself pumped. Silly, worked anyway.

After about a week, I could go into the studio and resume my composing. It's work I look forward to and enjoy every single day. How lucky to be still doing it!

Setbacks in life are inevitable. My glass is more than half full. If you're alive to read this, so's yours.

I sure hope I don't sound preachy.
