Everyone Murders

If the safe was locked without a key in it, it's likely that the burglars are trying to break it open in hopes of finding money or jewelry in it.  Unfortunately, those efforts are unlikely to be successful (that's the point of a safe) and are also likely to damage the hard drives (which don't do well with rattling).

A lot of crime like this is driven by substance abuse, and the perpetrators are just looking for anything that they can turn into cash to turn into drugs.  It seems likely that the burglars have no idea of what is in the safe.  If it was open, why take the safe when you can just take the contents?

I hope that the Carrs are able to track down the safe, and the thieves get appropriate punishment.  But I doubt the burglars have any idea what's in the safe, or why it's valuable to the Carr family and of no value for pawn/street sale.

I am afraid you are probably right:  the safe was probably broken open, any valuables taken, and then the rest went into some dumpster somewhere.  Why would thieves hang onto hard drives?

I guess we can hope that the thieves saw the reward info before they managed to break into the safe, and now are trying to figure out some way to get the reward.

This really sucks for people who0 have already suffered a lot, but I'm not going to go all postal on the thieves.  I hope they get what they deserve, no more and no less.

Two things. One, fireproof safes are not necessarily designed to be impenetrable. They are just meant to protect their contents if your house burns down. Mine doesn't even have a lock. Two, hopefully they were solid state harddrives so any kinetic abuse has a lower chance of damaging the data.

There have been a lot of burglaries in this area recently. With this happening while they were in vacation, I wonder if they posted the plans on social media and someone picked up on it.

Our house was broken into a few weeks ago while we were at my mother-in-law's funeral.  They got our tvs, cash, silver coins and ipads.  4 laptops were just sitting in the open but they left those and got the monitors instead.  All told a weird theft.  Anyway, I hope the Carrs can get their memories back.
