CFB Content - What Do You Pay For?

Submitted by WhatTheFekete on August 18th, 2022 at 1:14 PM

First and foremost, hopefully everyone is buying HTTV 2022.  I have been reading it and it's excellent once again.

With the season quickly approaching, I am curious with the landscape riddled with college football content... But what do sites you pay for?  What's worth it?

I am brainstorming a list of ones that I keep seeing online.  I guarantee I am missing some.

- The Athletic

- The Wolverine / On3

- Rivals / Maize&Brew Review

- Scott Bell's newsletter

- ESPN+ (for articles not video content)

- 24/7 Sports

- Meet at Midfield (Ace's New Project)

- Other Non-Michigan related content

Yes, I know we have had this conversation in the past but I am curious about what is fresh and relevant for the 2022 season.

Not willing to pay for sports content personally... especially when even the "premium" content one pays to see still comes with commercial advertisements.

I have a 247 sports subscription because I like the "insider" bits on practices and recruiting. But I very rarely let it fall into a full price subscription. Usually what I do is cancel it after a promotional period, and then sign back up when they're offering a new one. I don't think it's worth $15/month.

I get ESPN+ through my verizon plan, rarely ever use it. ESPN offers almost exclusively nonsense articles with no substance.

And that's about it for me. I personally hate subscription models, being nickel and dimed by every single source out there. Freep is trying to do it, DetNews is trying to do it (even if you just want to read their sports articles). If you're in it exclusively to see UM sports related news, I think 247 is the best bet. A lot of the other sources are going to contain generic fluff pieces.

I usually buy HTTV but being so late this year I'm probably not. The season will have started before I have really had time to go through it all.

The only one I subscribe to is the Athletic but I don't plan on renewing next month. Most of the writers that I like left that platform and their customer service is shit. I had a subscription to Scout back in in the mid 2000s.

I buy HTTV and thats it.

I am still trying to decide what my best option is for watching games this season. What are peoples plans after the cut the cord?

Sent some cash Magnus's way to help keep Touch the Banner going. Love his recruiting profiles (amongst other stuff) seems like he's more realistic than most.

I don't pay for any print materials. For viewing I have Hulu, prime, and we split Disney plus and Netflix passwords with my sister quid pro quo (Netflix is honestly near the chopping block for us). If I need to watch an out of market NFL game on a Sunday, which is often, I go to the bar for the afternoon.

I cut cable a year ago after hanging onto it for years just for baseball and football. I haven't missed much with the tigers this year but if things require yet another streaming service like peacock I may go back to cable if the packages are right or seek out another person to share a peacock password with, perhaps in exchange for access to my Hulu.

None of these. I find it weird anyone does.

I refuse to believe anything on these pay sites is any more informative than what's free. Recruiting is 90% BS until the day they sign, and anything important gets rewritten ad infinitum on free sources within days, if not hours.

mgolog.com.

I send them cash for a decent set of beverages every quarter to thank them for their "good stuff" (and because my ad blocker saves my sanity, which still seems to be slipping away 😁).

24/7 - I got the Black Friday deal. I'll cancel before it re-ups.

On3 - Same.

I also donate $ to this site

That's it. I also only get live TV for CFB. I generally cancel in January, unless UMBB is looking like a contender.

The Athletic

ESPN+ (signed up for NHL access but am enjoying lots of other content there)

HTTV

I usually buy at least two of the CFB preview magazines, too, sometimes three (Athlon, Lindy's, Phil Steele).

Not CFB, but I happily signed up for umhoops when Dylan started to offer a subscription model. His stuff is fantastic and Michigan basketball has been an absolute joy to read about for the past decade+.

For CFB I just pay for the mgoblog season preview and donate/click ads occasionally.

None of it. Can't justify paying for things like this. Like others have said, pretty much everything is reposted on free sites anyway, and if/when things become unavailable, so be it, I'm so busy I don't really miss it anyway.
